Airbnb forecasts second-quarter revenue below estimates, flags softening US travel demand

May 1 (Reuters) - Vacation rental platform Airbnb (ABNB.O), opens new tab on Thursday forecast second-quarter revenue largely below Wall Street estimates and signaled softening demand in the U.S. as an erratic trade policy hammers consumer sentiment and sparks worries over growth. Shares of the company fell 2% in after-market trading. The company expects second-quarter revenue between $2.99 billion and $3.05 billion, the midpoint of which is below analysts' estimates of $3.04 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Over the last two months, Delta Airlines (DAL.N), opens new tab warned travel demand has "largely stalled" while hotel operator Hilton (HLT.N), opens new tab indicated travelers were in a "wait-and see" mode, as President Donald Trump's on-again off-again tariffs take a toll. Nights and experiences booked during the first quarter rose 8% to 143.1 million on a global basis. Excluding North America, bookings were up 11% from a year earlier. The U.S. comprises a vast majority of the San Francisco-based company's North America business, which contributes about 30% to nights booked on its platform. Airbnb said it expects average daily rate, or the rental revenue earned for an occupied room per day, to remain flat in the second quarter and core profit margin to be slightly down from a year earlier. It also expects moderation in the year-over-year growth rate of the nights booked in the current quarter from the first. Total revenue for the first quarter rose 6% to $2.27 billion. However, net income slumped 41.7% to $154 million due to higher headcount, write-downs of certain historical investments in privately held companies and lower interest income. The short-term rental company reiterated its ambitions to become a more diversified travel provider. Last quarter, Airbnb said it would invest $200 million to $250 million in 2025 as part of that plan. It is expected to announce a new business later on May 13.

Cheap fuel, strong revenues: Air France-KLM dodges Q1 tariff uncertainty

LONDON, April 30 (Reuters) - Franco-Dutch airline group Air France-KLM ( opens new tab on Wednesday reported better than expected results as it saw strong revenues and a drop in jet fuel costs, despite worries about the knock-on impact from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff threats. European airlines have been on alert for possible repercussions from global economic uncertainty tied to tariffs, although carriers like Lufthansa ( opens new tab have said they've yet to see a notable impact on demand or earnings. Air France-KLM said earlier this month that it would consider dropping economy ticket prices on its transatlantic routes if needed. "The increasingly uncertain context may bring additional headwinds going forward, yet we believe Air France-KLM is uniquely positioned to adapt and perform, thanks to its diversified network," Chief Executive Ben Smith said in a statement. The company said it benefited from ongoing demand to its hub, Paris, and that it planned to mitigate risks from tariff turmoil by diversifying its routes and shifting capacity if needed. The group reported an operating loss of 328 million euros ($373.85 million) for the first quarter, compared to a 370 million euro ($421.73 million) loss expected by analysts polled by LSEG. That's an improvement of 161 million euros ($183.51 million)over the same quarter last year. The first quarter is often the weakest for airlines given lower bookings between January and March. Airlines make up revenues in the busy summer travel season. ($1 = 0.8773 euros)

EXCLUSIVE I created a female solo travel group after sexual assualt - these are the surprising countries that aren't as unsafe as you think

The Coronavirus pandemic was a time when most people stopped travelling all together. But, for Sophie Davis, it was just the beginning of her female solo travel adventures – as it was when she created Outdoor Adventure Girls. The 32-year-old from Milton Keynes tells us: 'Like everybody, I was feeling really isolated, and I didn't have loads of friends nearby. 'In my early twenties, I unfortunately went through sexual assault and didn't talk to anyone about it at the time, and it was only during the pandemic that I decided I needed to make some changes and start moving on from it. 'So I set up a walking group as a way of being able to connect with other women, get outside, which is great for mental and physical health, and make new friends as well.' What started as one local walking group in Milton Keynes, in June 2021, has grown into what Sophie says is 'the biggest female adventure community in the UK' with 14 regional groups across the UK, heading to National Parks around the country. Since 2022, OAG has also been running regular international group trips too – and Sophie has been lucky enough to go to many places around the world including Bali, Peru and Costa Rica. For Sophie, it was Peru that surprised her the most, having initially thought it would be unsafe to go to as a woman. 'Peru is a really epic country,' she tells us. 'Obviously it's very popular for doing the Inca trail and Machu Picchu, but there's so much culture in Peru that I just hadn't really understood or realised before I went. 'The food is incredible - you don't really hear about Peruvian restaurants here in the UK – and the culture and the people as well. 'It was a really surprising destination to me how kind people were, and how really safe it was. 'I think I might have had misconceptions, pior to going, that maybe it wouldn't be safe, but it was incredibly safe, and I always felt the locals were really kind and welcoming.' Sophie's favourite destination is Costa Rica, having hosted an OAG trip there in March 2024, 'with an amazing group of women who have actually all stayed in touch since'. 'Costa Rica is another one of those countries where it's incredibly safe, but, because it's in Central America, women don't always quite feel confident enough to do it by themselves,' says Sophie. 'While there, we went into the Costa Rican jungle, and we stayed as a group with various different families in this community up in the mountains and split off into little groups for a couple of days, and we actually integrated with that family, cooked with them each evening and spent loads of time with them.' Sophie has met some of her closest friends through creating OAG – and is constantly told by women who join the groups that they've made lifelong pals through it too. Sophie continues: 'At OAG, we always say that we do solo travel, because the women attending any of our trips are coming alone, and we do go to a lot of destinations where women in general might not feel safe on their own doing it by themselves. 'But they're then being able to travel in a supportive and safe environment, so it's like the best of both worlds. 'They get to tick that solo travel thing off and say, 'I didn't go with a friend or family member, but I now have these other women around me who support me!' 'When these women leave our events or trips, they tell me they've made best friends with the person they met 48 hours ago, and they're planning to meet up with them in the next month or later on in the summer, and I think that's the goal achieved, of what I set out to do.'
