One national analyst believes that Notre Dame football will be a powerhouse going forward
This past season was an eye-opener for many Notre Dame football fans, and the haters as well.
Many didn't think that the Irish were good enough to make the College Football Playoff due to an early-season loss to Northern Illinois, and even though they got in, those same people believed it would be a quick exit for Marcus Freeman's group. Well, that wasn't exactly the case, as they beat two Big Ten teams in Indiana and Penn State, and the SEC Champion Georgia on its way to the CFP championship game.

While one season doesn't define a program, it was eye-opening and enough to impress On3's J.D. Pickell. He went on to say that he 'doesn't see a clear governor on Notre Dame' to becoming a powerhouse in college football.
Pickell mentions factors like Freeman, the influx of talent via recruiting, and being a destination for players who enter the transfer portal that give him no reasons to think this won't happen. With the change to the CFP format going to straight seeding, the conference hurdle is no longer an issue, making Notre Dame's path to a title much easier.
It's hard to disagree with Pickell's assessment of the Irish's current situation, but you have to give a ton of credit to Freeman for what he has built over his first three seasons. While losses to Marshall and NIU weren't ideal, it hasn't stopped the vision that the head coach has created, and we are starting to see the fruits of his labor in South Bend.

Snow Patrol frontman to perform home city gig with a difference
Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody will perform one of his first major gigs as an author, in his home town this summer. The event discussing his new book, The Forest Is The Path, is expected to be one of the star attractions of this summer's Open House Festival in Bangor, Co Down. The annual festival includes almost 100 events throughout August, and is expected to attract about 50,000 people to the city, with Bangor Castle Walled Garden and the Court House on the seafront as the focal venues. Lightbody will be talking to Irish author and broadcaster Sinead Gleeson about his book The Forest Is The Path, which was published in March, in what has been billed as a 'very different and incredibly personal hometown appearance', on August 26-27. Among the other stars to appear at the Walled Garden are singers Lisa O'Neill and Mary Coughlan, folk duo Ye Vagabonds, and comedians Paddy Raff, Chris Kent and Neil Delamere. Events at the Court House include The Ocelots, twin brothers from Wexford now based in Germany, and a special festival performance by Northern Ireland Opera. Among the other author events scheduled, former Labour cabinet member Alan Johnson will talk about his new book, Harold Wilson, Chris Whitaker will be discussing his international best-selling novel All The Colours Of The Dark, and American writer Karen Hao will be talking about her new book Empire Of AI. Open House director Kieran Gilmore said the festival puts a spotlight on Bangor's creative talent. 'This year's festival has some of our finest local artists performing in iconic venues throughout the city,' he said. 'From an interview with Gary Lightbody about his new book, to a conversation between Declan Lawn, Bafta-winning writer of Blue Lights, and local author Colin Bateman, to an intimate launch of a new EP by King Cedar, we're bringing around 100 events across a whole range of art forms.' The Open House summer season gets under way on Friday July 4, with the annual Pickie to Pier swimming race, although the Seaside Revival Vintage Festival will not take place this year because of development work on the sea front. D'Andre Swift shares first impression of Bears rookie Kyle Monangai The Chicago Bears didn't make any major moves at running back this offseason, with the only addition coming with the selection of Kyle Monangai out of Rutgers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft. Adding Monangai to the running back room, which will feature new position coach Eric Bieniemy, brings plenty of eyes and attention to every running back on the roster, especially D'Andre Swift. In what many, including himself, felt was a disappointing 2024 season, Swift not only vows to bounce back, but is also ready to be a mentor for his rookie teammate. Swift had high praise for Monangai, a two-time All-Big Ten selection in 2023 and 2024, and what he's done so far this offseason. "Real good, really good. Really excited for him," Swift said. "Very talented, very talented. He's cool, and he's from Jersey. I'm from Philly, he's from Jersey, so close. But he's been really good so far, excited for him." While there could be an opportunity to crack into the rotation as a rookie, it's equally as important to see the veteran Swift speak highly of him early in the offseason program. With Swift, Roschon Johnson, and Monangai, head coach Ben Johnson will have plenty of options and opportunities to utilize all three backs, who all have a different style of play and running ability. Taking a look at the team rankings as they stand right now, there are programs near the top of the list that haven't been associated with elite recruiting classes in recent years. Illinois currently has a top-10 recruiting class, something the program has never had at the end of a recruiting cycle. In fact, Illinois' highest-ranked recruiting class was in 2007 when it finished at No. 20 in the team rankings. With five four-star prospects onboard, Illinois is set up to finish with one of the best recruiting classes in program history. If they crash the College Football Playoff this season, who knows how high the Illini could finish. In this cycle though, head coach Jeff Brohm and company already have 17 commitments and find themselves just outside the top 10 and the team rankings. With two Rivals250 commitments and an additional four-star commitment, the Cardinals are in position for their highest-ranked recruiting class since the 2023 cycle. Still, the Scarlet Knights have put together a strong recruiting class with five four-star prospects and currently sit inside the top 10 of the team rankings. Rutgers has never finished with a top-25 recruiting class, but there is still time for the Scarlet Knights to pick up momentum with key prospects and reel them in before the end of the recruiting cycle. Advertisement SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH RUTGERS FANS AT USC RELATED: USC 2026 commit list The Trojans are a far cry from the Pete Carroll years when they were consistently signing top-five recruiting classes, but head coach Lincoln Riley and general manager Chad Bowden have seemingly reversed that trend. USC currently sits at No. 1 in the team rankings with a total of 27 commitments, including two five-stars and three other top-100 prospects. The Trojans will need to continue to add elite prospects to this class if they hope to hold onto that top spot, but they've already positioned themselves to finish well inside the top 10.
