‘Bows Cooper Walls named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week
On Monday, the Big West named their Pitcher of the week, Cooper Walls.
Walls, a True Freshman with the Hawaii baseball team, had a solid showing against the then 15th-ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.
The right-handed pitcher threw 7.0 innings and allowed only 4 hits and did not give up a single run.
Walls helped secure the 'Bows first series win against a ranked opponent since 2010 when UH defeated Oregon. He is also the first Hawaii Freshman to be named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week since Hawaii joined the Big West back in 2013.
UH improved to 3-3 in conference play and will be back at the Les Murakami Stadium on Saturday against UC Davis.

Matt Elliott named next UH Mānoa athletics director, pending regents' approval
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Matt Elliott has been tapped to serve as the next athletics director at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, pending approval by the UH Board of Regents at a special meeting on June 16. Elliott spent 13 years in athletics administration at UCLA, most recently as Chief Strategy Officer. There, he helped guide the Bruins' move from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten and led development of a five-year strategic plan. He also played key roles in NIL policy, legal affairs, and a record-setting $280 million apparel 2024, Elliott has served as Senior Director of Policy and Public Affairs at the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, working closely with state leaders on advocacy efforts. He and his family returned to Hawaiʻi in 2022. 'This is home for us,' Elliott said. 'It's an honor to lead a program that reflects the pride of our local community. I look forward to building something great with our student-athletes, coaches, and fans.' Originally from Massachusetts, Elliott holds a law degree from Northwestern and a BA from Amherst College, where he was on the varsity crew team. All signs point to MLB's automatic ball-strike challenge system coming in 2026
MLB appears ready to add another element of replay review to its game as early as next year. Rob Manfred said Tuesday he plans to propose a plan to bring the automatic ball-strike system to the majors for 2026, The Athletic reported from MLB headquarters. MLB Photos via Getty Images ABS has been tested since 2019, first in the independent Atlantic League before coming to the affiliated minor leagues in 2022. In 2023 and 2024, the Triple-A level used a mix of full ABS — meaning all of the pitches were called by an automatic strike zone — and a challenge system. This year's spring training had the system in place, allowing a batter, pitcher or catcher to challenge a given pitch, with each team given two challenges per game. The strike zone was determined by the Hawk-Eye tracking system and depended on a batter's height. 'I think that teams are really positive about ABS,' Manfred said, according to The Athletic. 'You know, I do have that unscientific system that I use — my email traffic — and my distinct impression is that using ABS in spring training has made people more prone to complain about balls and strike calls via email, to me, referencing the need for ABS. MLB first added replay review late in the 2008 season to check home run calls before making significant additions in 2014 that included fair/foul, boundary calls and safe/out calls chief among them. On Sunday, Taylor Walls of the Rays was ejected after tapping his helmet — in an apparent nod to an ABS challenge — when he disagreed with a called strike from home plate umpire Nic Lentz, though Walls denied he was referencing the system. 'That's what [Lentz] told me. 'You're not going to do that. You're not going to tap your helmet.' And so at that point, like, I know that they think that's disrespectful,' Walls said after the game. 'I watched the video, and I could see where he may have thought that.'

Thanatharn selected as new UH softball head coach
The University of Hawai'i has ushered in a new era in Rainbow Wahine softball, naming Panita Thanatharn as its next head coach, the school announced Wednesday, four weeks after the conclusion of the 2025 season. Thanatharn, a Long Beach State alumna, spent the past 14 seasons on staff with the 49ers, including the last nine as associate head coach. During her tenure, she helped lead LBSU to four Big West Conference championships and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. She now takes the reins from legendary head coach Bob Coolen, who retired after 34 seasons at UH. Coolen leaves behind a storied legacy that includes more than 1,100 career wins, 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, and a trip to the Women's College World Series in 2010. Among the finalists for the position was longtime UH assistant coach Dee Wisneski. Key returnees for the 2026 season include standout players Milan Ah Yat and Carys Murakami, serving as a strong foundation as Thanatharn begins her tenure.
