Mali U17 continued their impressive start to the 2025 TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over Central African Republic on Friday in Berrechid to move top of Group D.
Having beaten Angola in their opening game, Mali made it two wins from two and secured their place in the knockout stages, while Central African Republic, suffering their second consecutive defeat, are now out of contention for the semi-finals.
The victory also means that the West Africans have secured their place at the U17 World Cup to be played in Qatar from 3-27 November, which will feature 48 nations.
Mali broke the deadlock in the 21st minute after sustained pressure, when Soumaila Fané tucked in from close range following a corner.
The goal was just reward for Mali's early dominance, with Ndjicoura Bomba playing a key role in the buildup.
Central African Republic were left with a mountain to climb after they were reduced to 10 men before half-time. Defender Nelson Amadi was sent off following a VAR review for a dangerous foul in the 44th minute.
Mali capitalised quickly after the restart. Just a minute into the second half, Ndjicoura Bomba headed in Mali's second goal from Fané's cross, making it 2-0 and effectively sealing the result.
Despite some spirited efforts from the Central African Republic — including a few saves forced from the Malian goalkeeper — they struggled to make their numerical disadvantage count.
A second red card followed for Chrispin Ngombe in the 64th minute, further denting any hopes of a comeback.
Mali will now face Cote d'Ivoire in their final group game on Monday, needing only a draw to top the group. Central African Republic will seek to restore pride when they take on Angola.
Following the wins of their opening two matches in the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, which is currently taking place in Morocco, Mali have secured a place in the top two positions in their group.
All four group winners and runners-up from the continental competition are guaranteed a ticket to Qatar 2025.
The four third-place teams will enter a play-off to determine CAF's final two representatives.

Zamalek conclude league campaign with 2-0 win over Pharco - Egyptian Football

Third-placed Zamalek ended their disappointing Egyptian League season with a 2-0 victory over Pharco FC in the final matchday of the playoff stage at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday. Midfielders Mohamed Shehata and youngster Mohamed El-Sayed scored for Zamalek in each half, securing a morale-boosting result for the White Knights ahead of their Cup final on 5 June against Pyramids. Despite dominating possession in the first half, Zamalek struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. Shehata broke the deadlock in the 26th minute, latching onto a cross from left-back Ahmed Fatouh outside the box to unleash a stunning 25-meter right-footed strike into the bottom-left corner, marking his second league goal of the season. The Cairo-based side continued to face challenges in breaching Pharco's resolute defense, which remained organized in thwarting Zamalek's attempts to extend their lead. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Shehata tested the woodwork with another long-range effort, striking the left post before the ball rebounded off goalkeeper Mohamed Nadim into his grasp. After the break, interim coach Ayman El-Ramady introduced Nasser Maher, Mohamed El-Sayed, and Mostafa El-Zenary for Nabil Emad, Abdallah El-Said, and Omar Gaber. Six minutes into the second half, right-winger Ahmed 'Esho' Abdel-Rahman struck the crossbar with a close-range left-footed shot. El-Ramady's 58th-minute substitution of veteran skipper Mahmoud 'Shikabala' Abdel-Razek proved decisive, as the Zamalek star delivered a precise cross from the left for El-Sayed to tap home from close range. Pharco FC's players appealed for a penalty four minutes later when striker Ahmed Sherif fell in the box, but the referee upheld the decision to continue play following a VAR review. Zamalek dominated the remainder of the match but failed to capitalize on further chances. The result lifted Zamalek to 47 points, finishing 11 points behind league champions Ahly and nine adrift of second-placed Pyramids FC, while Pharco FC retained seventh spot with 32 points. Zamalek now shift focus to their Egypt Cup final showdown against Pyramids FC on Thursday, aiming to secure silverware after a frustrating campaign. Benzema leads Al-Ittihad to Saudi Cup win and domestic double

Al Ittihad's Karim Benzema lifts the trophy after winning the Saudi Pro League REUTERS/Stringer (Reuters) - Al-Ittihad's Karim Benzema scored twice to lead his side to a 3-1 victory over Al-Qadsiah in the Saudi Cup final on Friday as they completed the domestic double. Laurent Blanc's side dominated the game to win the cup for the 10th time, while Al-Qadsiah finished the game with 10 men after Ezequiel Fernandez was sent off in the 81st minute. Moussa Diaby nearly put Al-Ittihad ahead but missed a chance in the 21st minute. Al-Qadsiah's former Spain defender Nacho escaped conceding a penalty when the ball touched his hand, but the referee didn't award a spot kick despite a VAR check in the 32nd minute. Benzema opened the scoring for the Saudi Pro League champions, using his chest to convert Steven Bergwijn's precise cross 11 minutes before the interval. Houssem Aouar made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute by following up after Koen Casteels saved a header from Benzema. Al-Qadsiah's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time. Benzema, who won the SPL Player of the Season, hit the bar after the break, but Al-Ittihad were more cautious as they looked to maintain their lead. Al-Ittihad keeper Predrag Rajkovic saved Aubameyang's shot in the 80th minute and Al-Qadsiah suffered a big blow when Ezequiel Fernandez received a second yellow card, forcing them to play with 10 men for the final minutes. Then 2022 Ballon d'Or winner Benzema scored his side's third goal, firing in Diaby's low cross in stoppage time, before Aubameyang's shot hit the woodwork.

Côte d'Ivoire braced for tough U-17 World Cup test, says Diabate

Published: Thursday, 29 May 2025 Côte d'Ivoire U-17 head coach Bassiriki Diabate has admitted his side faces a daunting challenge at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 after being drawn into what he described as a 'difficult group.' The Elephants will compete in Group F alongside Mexico, Korea Republic, and Switzerland — a trio of teams representing three different continents and styles of play. 'This draw placed us in a rather difficult group,' said Diabate following the draw in Doha on 25 May. 'We have Mexico from the Americas, Switzerland from Europe, and Korea Republic from Asia. It's quite a diverse group with some very strong teams, which will make this competition quite challenging for us.' The 2025 tournament will mark Côte d'Ivoire's return to the global U-17 stage, with the expanded 48-team format offering a bigger platform for African youth talent. But for Diabate and his technical team, the blend of football cultures in their group means preparation must be precise. 'Our players must be ready to face different football philosophies in a very short space of time,' Diabate added. 'It's a big learning opportunity, but also a massive test of tactical adaptability and mental strength.' The Elephants qualified for the global finals through a strong performance at the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. They are now tasked with making their mark against some of the game's best youth sides in Qatar. Mexico are traditionally strong at youth level, having won the U-17 World Cup twice (2005, 2011), while Korea Republic bring technical discipline and intensity. Switzerland, known for producing highly organized and physically robust sides, round off the group. Despite the challenges ahead, Diabate remains optimistic that Côte d'Ivoire can rise to the occasion. 'Our objective is to compete, grow, and show that Ivorian football has a bright future,' he said. 'We are not just going to participate — we aim to compete at the highest level.' The Elephants will open their campaign in Group F when the tournament begins on 3 November in Qatar. All eyes will be on how this young Ivorian side navigates one of the most intriguing groups in the expanded global showpiece.
