Authorities urged to monitor prices of essential goods during Gawai
SIBU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) has been called to intensify the monitoring of prices of essential goods during this year's Gawai Dayak celebration.
Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) president Major (R) Moses ak Ripai urged the ministry's enforcement teams to carry out continuous inspections at supermarkets, public markets, and retail shops across Sarawak, particularly on key items such as chicken, meat, eggs, onions, and other basic necessities.
He said that strict action should be taken against traders found charging unreasonable prices or failing to adhere to the maximum price ceilings set by the authorities.
"In addition to enforcement, PBDS encourages active public participation through official complaint channels, including via the e-Aduan hotline app and ministry's social media platforms," he said in a statement on Thursday (May 22).
Moses also appealed to traders to act responsibly and uphold ethical business practices, while reminding consumers to compare prices and lodge reports if they encounter irregularities.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to safeguarding consumer interests and helping the people cope with rising living costs.
Moses also reminded road users to prioritise safety when returning to their hometowns.
He especially urged the Dayak community to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol and called for enhanced enforcement by authorities during the festive period.
"The Simpang Kanowit roundabout is known as an accident-prone location despite the presence of multiple warning signs. Road users travelling on the Pan Borneo Highway are advised to reduce their speed after the Durin bridge and Julau flyover to avoid mishaps," he said.
Moses also stressed the importance of fire safety in longhouses, urging residents to regularly check their electrical systems and remain vigilant.
He noted that faulty wiring and the improper use of fuel sources such as cooking gas cylinders are common causes of longhouse fires.

'At the time, my daughter said she would pay S$78 (RM256) to her during the next lesson.' The tutor had been hired through an agency in 2024 to provide weekly Chinese lessons while the girl was in Primary 6. Lessons were conducted behind closed doors in the girl's room every Monday. Despite nearly a year of tuition, Zhu said her grades did not improve. 'My daughter's Chinese grades this year were failing. I originally thought it was her own fault, but now I know the tutor wasn't teaching seriously at all,' he said. He added that after the first three proper lessons, the tutor had spent most of her time chatting with the girl and even bought her snacks and cosmetics. Zhu said: 'Later I called the tutor directly, and she initially denied it. It wasn't until I told her I had already seen their chat records that she immediately hung up and blocked me.' He added, 'The tutor should have known better than to satisfy the curiosity of the girl by buying the vape on my daughter's behalf.' The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) confirmed with Shin Min that it is investigating the case. It reminded the public that importing, distributing, or selling e-cigarettes and their components is illegal in Singapore. First-time offenders face fines of up to S$10,000, jail of up to six months, or both. Repeat offenders face double the penalty. Zhu also reported the incident to the agency that had arranged the tuition. A spokesman told Shin Min that the agency has removed the tutor from its roster and taken steps to prevent similar incidents in future. Following the discovery, Zhu has taken stricter measures at home. He said he now leaves the door open during tuition sessions and regularly checks his daughter's school bag.

It was read with Section 326A of the Penal Code, which allows for double the penalty since it is a case of domestic violence.
