Barrage project near Ajwa reservoir set to begin post-monsoon

Time of India4 days ago

Vadodara: The irrigation department has initiated the process to appoint an agency for the construction of a barrage parallel to the Ajwa reservoir, a key step in the city's long-term flood mitigation plan.
The project was one of the recommendations made by the high-power committee formed for flood control in Vadodara.
The Ajwa reservoir, situated around 20 km from the city, is a crucial source of drinking water and dates back to 1890. It was built on the Surya rivulet during the reign of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III of the erstwhile Baroda state. The earthen dam currently channels its overflow into the Vishwamitri river, which passes through the city.
To manage and control the flow of excess water more efficiently, the new barrage will be constructed downstream of the reservoir. It is expected to slow down water discharge, thereby reducing the risk of flooding in urban areas.
Since Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), which oversees the reservoir, lacks experience in such construction, the irrigation department has taken charge of the project due to its technical expertise.
According to sources, the pre-qualification bids are under review. Once the eligible agencies are shortlisted, financial bids will be invited, and the contract will be awarded to the lowest bidder.
An official associated with the project said the estimated cost of construction is Rs 100 crore, based on the department's schedule of rates. The selected contractor will be given 18 months to complete the work. The official added that construction is likely to commence after the monsoon. "This project is part of the city's long-term flood mitigation strategy and was not among the immediate measures," the official said.

Karnataka Dy CM Shivakumar urges Centre's support as Maharashtra objects to Alamatti dam height increase

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 2 (ANI): After the Maharashtra government raised objections to increasing the height of the Alamatti dam, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday appealed to Union Ministers and MPs from Karnataka to safeguard the state's interests. While addressing a press conference at Vidhana Soudha, DK Shivakumar said, 'As per the Krishna Tribunal's order, Karnataka can increase the height of the Alamatti dam to 524 meters. Maharashtra, who was quiet when the order was pronounced, suddenly wrote a letter to our CM objecting to it. I appeal to all the Union Ministers and MPs with folded hands to protect the state's interest in this.' Shivakumar said that Fadnavis wrote a letter to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah on May 9 stating that the Sangli and Kolhapur districts would face flooding if the dam's height is raised. He added, 'Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has written a letter to our CM Siddaramaiah on May 9, raising objections to increasing the height of the Alamatti dam. Stating that Sangli and Kolhapur districts would face flooding if the dam's height is raised, the letter has asked for the re-evaluation of the plan. This letter is a shock to us. Maharashtra had never objected to this project till now. They had not raised any issues when the Tribunal passed its judgement in 2010. Maharashtra had even submitted an affidavit to the Tribunal seeking to increase the height, but it is opposing it all of a sudden.' He said that CM Siddaramaiah will reply to the Maharashtra CM's letter. 'This project is our right, as accorded by the Krishna Tribunal. Our CM will give a reply to the letter from the Maharashtra CM. Union Minister V Somanna is part of Union Jal Shakthi ministry. Alamatti project is needed for the state, we don't want friction with our neighbouring state. The cost escalation is very due to delay in this project. We would need Rs 1 lakh crore for land acquisition for this project,' he said. Shivakumar said that Karnataka has been waiting for a Gazette notification to increase the height of Alamatti since 2013 'Flooding in Maharashtra is their internal matter, and they need to fix it. We will meet the PM and the Union Jal Shakthi Minister and put pressure regarding this. Karnataka has been waiting for a Gazette notification for increasing the height of Alamatti since 2013. How long should we wait? We will share the letter from the Maharashtra CM and our reply to that with all our MPs,' Shivakumar said. (ANI)

AP: Fine quality rice to be served to 41,000 schools from June 12: Minister Nadendla

Machilipatnam, June 2 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Minister for Civil Supplies Nadendla Manohar has announced that fine quality rice will be served to the students studying at over 41,000 government schools across the State from June 12 onwards. The oath-taking ceremony of the Kodali Agricultural Market Yard of Avanigadda Constituency, Ghantasala Mandal, Thota Kanakadurga Rajasekhar as the Chairman, Attaluri Gopichand as the Vice Chairman and the directors was held on Monday in the Agricultural Market Committee office. Avanigadda MLA Mandali Buddha Prasad presided over the function and Manohar attended the programme. Speaking on the occasion, the Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar said that the government has decided to serve fine quality rice, called as 'sanna biyyam' in local parlance, to the students studying over 41,000 government schools and staying in over 4,000 social welfare hostels across the State. The Minister observed that three and a half lakh metric tonnes of fine quality rice would be supplied to over 41,000 government schools and over 4,000 social welfare hostels in the State from June 12, adding that arrangements are being made to supply rice to schools and welfare hostels through the farmers who cultivate this rice. 'We have purchased about 48 lakh metric tonnes of paddy from the farmers during the Kharif and Rabi, which is the highest amount purchased by any State in the history of India. In this regard, Rs 12,400 crores have been disbursed to the farmers by crediting the amount in the bank accounts of farmers within 24 hours,' the Minister revealed, adding that in Krishna district alone, the Government has purchased about 58,000 metric tonnes of paddy. Taking a dig at the previous YSRCP regime, in the name of door delivery ration commodities, the Minister said that the YSRCP government purchased 9,360 MDU vehicles by spending Rs 1,650 crores and misused public money. These vehicles did not benefit the card holders as they were not provided exact information about when and where the MDU vehicles would deliver ration goods to the beneficiaries, they noted. APSRTC chairman Konakalla Narayana, Agnikula Kshatriya corporation chairman Chilakalapudi Papa Rao and DCMS chairman Bandi Ramakrishna were present. UNI DP RN

Bengal cabinet nod for inclusion of new castes on OBC list

Agency: Kolkata, Jun 2 (PTI) The cabinet on Monday approved recommendations of the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes (WBCBC) to include 76 new castes on the list for OBC, an official said. These 76 new castes would be added to the existing 64 ethnic groups on the Other Backward Class (OBC) list in the state, he said. The cabinet also gave its nod to a proposal to make Farakka a new subdivision in Murshidabad district, he said. It was learned that the new subdivision would be constituted of Farakka, Shamsherganj, Suti-1 and Suti-2 blocks, he said. Earlier, these four blocks were part of the Jangipur subdivision. 'Due to the growing population, the Jangipur subdivision authorities were facing difficulties in executing administrative work in the vast area. Hence, the decision was taken," the official told PTI. A source in Nabanna, the state secretariat, said that the council of ministers approved a decision to initiate a tendering process again to invite fresh bids for the proposed Rs 25,000-crore Tajpur deep-sea port project. The state government had, in 2023, dissolved the letter of intent (LoI) handed over to Gautam Adani-controlled Adani Ports to develop the deep-sea port, he said. 'The cabinet okayed the reopening of the tender for the Tajpur deep sea port project. The necessary steps will be followed soon," the source said. During the cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat, approval was given to create 109 contract-based posts at various administrative levels for the new subdivision, he added. Notably, Banerjee, during her recent visit to the riot-hit areas of Murshidabad district, had announced the formation of the new subdivision. On Monday, the state cabinet also approved the creation of 336 posts and filling up the vacancies in the departments of home, health, finance, law, and municipal affairs, the official added.
