I made horrifying discovery inside walls while renovating 16th century farmhouse – & found out murderer lived next door

The Sun27-04-2025

A WOMAN made a horror discovery while renovating a 16th-century farmhouse and found out a murderer lived next door.
Emmie Brookman, 28, bought the three-bedroom property with her fiance, Norton Johnston, 34, and had to renovate it after finding pink mould on the walls.

The couple hand-chiselled off the exterior render themselves - after being quoted £17k by professionals - but were surprised when they found a bone in the wall.
After initially being "creeped out" Emmie discovered bones used to be put in walls to ward of evil during the 16th century.
They found four bones in total in the exterior - and a further two inside - and Emmie believes one is a human finger bone and the rest are from animals.
The couple also discovered local murderer James Hargreaves lived in the manor house next door - but haven't been put off by the history.
Emmie, who is co-owner of a homeware business, from Barrowford, Lancashire, said: "We were taking the render off and when I was by the front something popped out of the wall.
"It was very obviously a bone.
"I was really creeped out.
"What do you do when you find a bone in the wall?
"We found about four more in the exterior.
"At first we thought we were going to find a full body."
We spent £70K transforming our 90s horror home into our Scandi-style dream pad but there's a bathroom mistake we deeply regret - don't do the same
Emmie bought the 1580s home in February 2023 for £311k after falling in love with its "character and quirkiness".
The couple had originally thought it just needed some "new carpets and paint" but then discovered it needed a lot more work.
Emmie said: "There was pink mould growing on the wall.
"It smelled really musty.
"Our paperwork would get soggy."
The couple realised the wrong render had been used on the property which was trapping moisture and had to chisel it off the get to the old stonework.
They started renovating in August 2024 - spending just £300 on hand chiselling the render off instead of the £17k they were quoted.
But Emmie and Norton, a science teacher, were shocked to discover the bones in their walls - as well as a mysterious green bottle filled with ashes and herbs.
Emmie said: "We found an article on magic in Kendal and read that they really believed in witches.
"They used to put bones in the walls and herbs to ward of the evil.
"It's what they believed was protecting them.
"We've found bones in near enough every room.
"One flew out at me and one I believe to be a finger."
Emmie is now planning to put some on display and has put a couple back into the wall.
She said: "They are part of the house."
After researching into their homes' history they also discovered convicted murderer - James Hargreaves - lived next door.
Hargreaves was convicted of assaulting his housekeeper and then shot a young solicitor's clerk in the back who had served the writ on him.
The couple have now finished the structural work on the property - and have just got two bedrooms and two bathrooms left to decorate.
Emmie estimates they have spent between £10k to £15k so far - and is renovating it "sympathetically" to keep in the style of the property.
She said: "If we'd have had professionals we'd be at £50k to £60k.
"I like to find something that has a story and fits in the house..
"We found reclaimed radiators from Facebook Marketplace from an old fire station."

And just a day later, human remains were discovered on June 6 by police after a major three week search for a body. As investigations continue into Pheobe's tragic death, the shocking state of her home in Gin Gin has been uncovered. Australian news outlet 7News managed to get access to the property and revealed the squalor Pheobe was enduring in the weeks before her passing. Before entering, the landlord can be heard in the video announcing: "I can't prepare you enough for this." In almost every room the floor was impossible to see due to the mounds of rubbish. Footage shows mountains of half empty soda bottles, unopened packages and full black bin liners in each room. The furniture was all out of place across the house with the sofas falling apart and the beds stained yellow. Even dog poo appeared to be on the floors of the old Queenslander-style home. Due to the horror conditions and poor cleaning, a major issue with the property was the smell. He also revealed the home was officially leased out by Bromley six months ago but she had been given a notice to leave after a recent inspection. Pheobe, from Gin Gin north of Brisbane, hadn't been seen or heard from since Thursday, May 15. Police first arrested Wood as he was the last person to see the teen as he reportedly took her to the airport. Cops believe during the drive to the airport, Wood, his girlfriend Bromley, and Pheobe all argued over stopping on the trip. Pheobe wanted to do her makeup in the car as she was on her way to Perth to visit her "high-school sweetheart" boyfriend, Wood said. The teen got her way in the end as Wood said he pulled over less than a kilometre away from their destination. He said: "We wanted to give her five minutes, give her her own space to do what she needed to do." 9 Full black sacks could be seen next to piles of rubbish Credit: 7 News 9 The landlord at the home even admitted 'the air tastes dirty' Credit: 7News 9 Phoebe with her heartbroken mum Credit: Facebook Wood and Bromley then said they walked off and were away from the car for around five minutes. When they returned, Wood said Pheobe and her bag were gone. This was the last time Pheobe was seen as an intense search operation was launched. On May 26, cops made a harrowing revelation. They believed evidence of a potential murder had been moved to cover up what had happened. On this same day, a new number plate was discovered to have been suspiciously painted and taped over Bromley's Hyundai car which drove to the airport. On June 5, police officially charged the couple with murder and two counts of interfering with a corpse. Cops allege Wood, Bromley and Pheobe were all in the car when it arrived at Airport Drive near Bundaberg Airport. They believe that the trio never left the car. Detective Inspector Craig Mansfield said: "Our evidence will outline the fact that three people arrived near to the airport, and three people never exited that vehicle." The pair continue to say they had nothing to do with Pheobe's disappearance or death. Wood and Bromley will appear in court on August 11. Against backdrop of societal unease, it's crucial our politicians show leadership to help calm tensions

Events in Ballymena demonstrate that some policing demands simply cannot be planned for in advance. Northern Ireland has a serious problem with violence against women and girls. That is not opinion but fact, borne out in statistics that show we have some of the worst rates of domestic abuse and femicide in Europe. People are right to be angry when it comes to the protection of women and girls. The issue is a societal one, a hangover from our troubled past, a symptom of a violently armed patriarchy. Protecting women requires a shift in societal attitudes, from early years education to proper policing and justice. It requires the promotion of positive male role models, not the Andrew Tate-style online agitators. The investigation into the alleged attack on a teenage girl in Ballymena is the latest report of violence in the town. Two 14-year-olds have been charged, while a third is still being sought. That the suspects are the children of migrants was revealed by court reports that confirmed that they required a Romanian interpreter. The media is greatly restricted in what it can report in live cases, particularly those involving juveniles. But there is no getting away from the fact that many of those who landed in Ballymena on Monday, determined to engage in violence, would not have been there only for the nationality of the suspects. The family members who organised a protest following the weekend attack did so in good faith. But the reality is, when people are called onto the streets, the results can be unpredictable. Within hours of the call for a peaceful protest, social media pages linked to far-right organisations were urging people to travel to the town. The result was violence on a scale not seen there for years, with injuries to police officers and homes destroyed by fire and vandalism. In 2018, when Britain First leader Paul Golding arrived in Ballymena making false allegations about the allocation of housing, he was sent packing by the good people of that town. The false narrative about an 'invasion' of foreign migrants was, at the time, challenged by the DUP's Paul Frew, who used facts to debunk myths. Mr Frew produced figures from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive showing that of all the properties allocated in the preceding 12 months, 2.5% were allocated to 'Persons from Abroad'. Following Monday's violence, it is for politicians to follow that lead and show leadership, to help calm rather than inflame tensions.

'Mass shooting' thwarted at Michigan high school graduation; one suspect arrested, another at large, officials say

What began as a fist fight at a high school graduation in Michigan on Tuesday has turned into a search for a 20-year-old suspect in what officials are calling a prevented mass shooting attempt. Oakland County authorities are searching for 20-year-old Jamarion Jaryante Hardiman — who is currently on probation for a weapons offense — in connection with the attempt at the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac (ATAP) graduation, Sheriff Michael Bouchard announced in a press conference on Friday. Another 19-year-old suspect is in custody, whose identity is not being released until charges are filed. Bouchard said the 19-year-old suspect also has a criminal history involving weapons. Oakland County Sheriff deputies were initially dispatched at 6:40 p.m. to the graduation held at the United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM) property for a fight. A person approached deputies at the scene and informed them a family member had seen a threat posted on Snapchat to shoot up the ceremony, Bouchard said. Authorities are not sure of the post's specific wording, as it has been taken down, but witnesses said it was along the lines of "was going to shoot up the crowd," Bouchard said. The two suspects, both Pontiac residents, were identified as individuals who were part of the fight and had been seen putting packages under cars in the parking lot when authorities arrived, according to Bouchard. Working with the UWM security team and their camera system, officials recovered two fully-loaded weapons at the scene. Each weapon also had a 40-round magazine. "So just those two weapons without changing magazines, had 80 rounds of potential firepower," Bouchard said. "Shooting into a graduation, you can only imagine the outcome of that." One of the suspects, who Bouchard did not specify, was carrying a pink, AR-style pistol with the loaded magazine in a backpack that was stashed under a vehicle when officers arrived. The other weapon recovered was a Glock semi-automatic handgun with a 40-round stick magazine. It is unknown if the suspects once attended the charter school, but Bouchard said they did have friends and relatives at the graduation and "ongoing disputes with individuals in the community." The sheriff said the motive behind the attempted shooting is unclear. The other parties involved in the disputes are not cooperating with authorities, according to Bouchard. "While a brief physical altercation did take place inside the venue, it was quickly handled by staff and security, and those involved were promptly removed," the school wrote in a social media post. "Thankfully, no one within the ceremony was harmed, and we were able to continue and complete our beautiful commencement celebration without further disruption." The 19-year-old suspect fled the scene, but was found after the graduation. Bouchard said he is 'confident' Hardiman will be located. Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding Hardiman's whereabouts to call 911. Bouchard advised community members not to try to apprehend or approach the suspect. When asked by reporters if Bouchard had anything to say to Hardiman, he replied: 'Turn yourself in. One way or another we're going to get you. Make it easier on yourself and the community.'
