Kevin Willard says he'll maintain culture Jay Wright built while trying to turn around Villanova

Washington Post09-04-2025

VILLANOVA, Pa. — Kevin Willard paid homage to Villanova basketball standard-bearer Jay Wright on Wednesday and pledged to foster the Wright-built culture of attitude, hard work and toughness while he attempts to return the Wildcats to their place among the nation's elite.
The school announced Willard's hiring March 30, three days after his Maryland team lost in the NCAA Sweet 16. He said at his introductory news conference he sought Wright's blessing before he accepted the job.

Brumbies on high alert for major Hurricanes threat

While much has been made of the breakdown battle, the ACT Brumbies are on high alert for the threat coming from the Hurricanes back-line in their Super Rugby Pacific qualifying final. The Brumbies are out to make amends at GIO Stadium on Saturday's after the Hurricanes snapped an eight-year losing streak in Canberra in round 11 when they cracked a 35-29 win. That scoreline set up their charge to the play-offs, winning six straight. Hurricanes winger Kini Naholo was pivotal in the match, making 10 tackle-busts en route to two tries, but will miss the final after suffering an ACL injury last month with Fatafehi Fineanganofo taking his place. Brumbies fullback Tom Wright said there was still plenty of strike weapons in the visitors' line-up and they couldn't give them any room to move. Peter Umaga-Jensen and Billy Proctor are two of the form centres of the competition and will keep the Brumbies pairing of Len Ikitau and David Feliuai on their toes. "I saw Umaga-Jensen carve out a pretty decent try on the weekend and Billy Proctor obviously, you don't have to go looking too far at the season that he's had also, so I dare say Len and Dave will have their hands full," Test No.15 Wright said. "The Hurricanes bring in that sort of expansive style of football, they play an exciting game and there's going to be a lot of points scored so we're looking forward to that challenge, but, you know, we didn't get here, by accident either. "With the season our centres have had as well, I know that they're (Hurricanes) going to be looking at that pretty seriously and trying to stop them at the same time, so it's going to be a good battle." A lil' slice and dice through the defence from Peter Umaga-Jensen 😮‍💨#SuperRugbyPacific #HURvMOA — Super Rugby Pacific (@SuperRugby) May 31, 2025 As well as a dominant home record, the ACT outfit have also enjoyed a favourable finals record against the Hurricanes, eliminating them in 1997, 2022 and 2023. Dependent on the results of the other two finals, as the third-ranked team the Brumbies could still advance to the semi-finals even with a loss. But after suffering a tight loss to the Crusaders in the final round, which cost them a top-two ladder position, Wright said his team wanted to control their own destiny. He didn't feel they were far off their best against the Crusaders, with a slow start proving costly. "For all the good work that we did we made it bloody hard on ourselves so we need to be a bit sharper as very much more of the same challenge will be coming at us this weekend from the Canes - big ball-carrying, physical guys with the footy, they want to impose themselves," Wright said. "We're looking forward to bringing the game to them."

Advertisement Moreno, a 7-foot center from Georgetown, recently led Great Crossing to a state title. The McDonald's All-American and USA Basketball U19 camp invitee will wear No. 24 for the Wildcats. He averaged 21.5 points, 14.9 rebounds, and shot 72% from the field as a senior. Potter, 7-foot-1, returns to his hometown after two seasons at Miami (OH). Hall's statue, and now, doing it again before move-in. In the video, Hawthorne said he's ready to get to work. Alongside the other new Wildcats, two more arrived this afternoon and evening as Kam Williams and Jasper Johnson shared their goals for this upcoming season. Advertisement Williams, the Tulane transfer, was the first transfer commit of this portal class as he chose the Cats right in the thick of the NCAA Tournament. Pope Leo XIV receives Villanova hat during meeting, reps alma mater at Vatican

Pope Leo XIV receives Villanova hat during meeting, reps alma mater at Vatican Show Caption Hide Caption Pope Leo XIV hugs his brother after inaugural mass Pope Leo XIV embraced and chatted with his older brother after finishing his inauguration mass in Vatican City. Pope Leo XIV's duties and day-to-day life may have changed since he became the successor to Pope Francis, but that isn't stopping him from repping his V's at the Vatican. He proved that during a meeting with members of the National Italian American Foundation at the Vatican in Italy on June 4, when he received a baseball hat of his alma mater, Villanova University. To no surprise, his holiness was brought to a smile when he received the gift, which he briefly took off his zucchetto to put on for a photo. REQUIRED READING: Is Pope Leo XIV a Cubs or White Sox fan? Brother reveals the favorite hometown team The pope putting on a Villanova cap is certainly a first, as there has never been a pope elected from the United States before. It also added some fuel to the ongoing spark of message boards within college basketball that Villanova is the pope's school and that the Big East is the pope's conference. Robert Francis Prevost — as he was known before taking the papal name Pope Leo XI — attended Villanova for his undergraduate studies, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1977. He additionally received an honorary doctor of humanities in 2014 according to a Villanova news release, shortly after he was elected pontiff by the College of Cardinals during the Conclave. Pope Leo XIV, who is from Chicago, was elected as the first American pope by the papal conclave on May 8. He is part of the Augustinian Order of priests, also known as the Order of Saint Augustine (OSA), the same order of priests that founded and runs Villanova. According to The Athletic, Pope Leo XIV has stayed in touch with his alma mater during his priesthood, specifically the Wildcats men's basketball program, which dominated the Big East from 2015-2019 under Jay Wright. "We've had a lot of fun watching the Knicks because Jalen (Brunson) and Josh (Hart) and Donte (DiVincenzo) was there and now Mikal (Bridges) is there," Villanova men's basketball chaplain Rob Hagan told The Athletic after his election. "I think that Pope Leo will still keep an eye on the 'Nova Knicks. I think he'll still keep an eye on the Wildcats, and I think he'll be very proud of not just who they are but the way that they play with a certain spirit and unselfishness." Being a fan of Villanova isn't the only known fan base that Pope Leo XIV is a part of. As previously reported by USA TODAY, Pope Leo XIV's brother, John Prevost, confirmed that he is a Chicago White Sox fan. He was also spotted at Game 1 of the 2005 World Series donning his White Sox gear. And so, as Pope Leo XIV continues his papacy, one pressing question now sits in front of his holiness: Will he have a March Madness bracket?
