Flight Ops Hit, Trees Uprooted, Roads Flooded As Delhi Receives Heavy Rain

Streets were waterlogged, trees were uprooted, hoardings flew around and flight operations were hit as Delhi and surrounding areas witnessed heavy rains, thunderstorms and strong winds overnight.
Severe waterlogging was witnessed in areas including Moti Bagh, Minto Road, and near Delhi Airport Terminal 1, per ANI.
Even as winds reached speeds of 40-60 kmph, flight operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) were impacted. In a post on X at 3.59 am, IndiGo said adverse weather conditions over Delhi had led to temporary disruptions in flight operations. Two hours later, the airline posted that operations were back to normal.
As of 7.30 am, flights from the Delhi airport are departing with an average delay of 46 minutes, as per FlightRadar24.
Heavy rains also lashed parts of Uttarakhand and Haryana.
The inclement weather came even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi and nearby areas. The weather body had said in its nowcast that a thunderstorm cell was approaching Delhi and adjoining areas from the west/northwest. Under its influence, severe thunderstorm or dust-raising wind activity accompanied by frequent lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching 40-60 km/h or more) was likely.
The IMD has urged people to avoid open spaces, not take shelter under trees, stay away from weak walls and unstable structures and not go near water bodies.
On Wednesday, a cloud mass had entered North Delhi and moved south-southeastwards, triggering a dust storm and strong winds. The winds blew at speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, accompanied by light rainfall earlier in the evening. Power disruptions were reported in several areas across the capital after the intense dust storm.
The rain and storm came a day after monsoon reached the Indian mainland in Kerala, a week ahead of the usual date and the earliest since 2009. Normally, the southwest monsoon makes its onset over Kerala by June 1 and covers the entire country by July 8. It starts retreating from northwest India around September 17 and withdraws completely by October 15.

DEHRADUN: The Himalayan region of Uttarakhand is witnessing an alarming proliferation of glacial lakes, a trend that experts warn could signal major future disasters in this ecologically fragile zone. A recent study by the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) has brought this worrying development to the fore. The study reveals a significant increase in the number of glaciers across the state, currently recorded at 1,290, up from 1,266 a decade ago. Concurrently, the area covered by glacial lakes has expanded by a substantial 8.1 per cent. This growth underscores the severe impacts of climate change on the delicate Himalayan ecosystem. Dr Rakesh Bhambri, a glaciologist at WIHG, elaborated on the findings, stating, 'Our research indicates that new lakes are forming on glaciers in the Uttarakhand Himalayas, and existing lakes are growing in size. There has been a notable increase in their numbers since our 2015 study.' Attributing this surge primarily to climate change and global warming, he further explained, 'The occurrence of rain instead of snow at altitudes of four to five thousand metres is a significant contributing factor, leading to glacier melt and the formation of these lakes.' While acknowledging the overall increase, Dr Bhambri clarified that not all lakes are expanding. The destructive potential of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) is not new to the region. The devastating Kedarnath tragedy of 2013 was triggered by the bursting of the Chorabari glacial lake, and the 2021 Raini-Tapovan floods were also a result of a similar event. Sikkim experienced a comparable disaster in 2013. In light of these past catastrophes, the Indian government has identified 13 such high-risk glacial lakes in Uttarakhand that could pose a significant threat in the future. Prominent among these are Vasundhara Lake in Chamoli, Kedartal in Uttarkashi, Nagkund in Bageshwar, six lakes in Pithoragarh, and one in Tehri.
