Former Spurs players back Postecoglou amid uncertain future
As Tottenham Hotspur ponder the fate of manager Ange Postecoglou, former players of the Premier League side have thrown their support behind the Australian and urged the club's ownership to stay the course.
Postecoglou guided Tottenham to Europa League victory last month, ending the club's 17-year trophy drought, but they also endured their worst domestic season for nearly half a century and finished 17th in the Premier League.
The 59-year-old said last month he remained unsure of his future, with reports in British media on Monday saying Tottenham are set to make their decision this week.
Former Swiss international Ramon Vega, who made 64 league appearances for Tottenham, said letting the Australian go would be one of the biggest mistakes the club could make.
"I find it incredibly disrespectful to even think about sacking Ange Postecoglou," Vega said on social media on Monday.
"He has accomplished the impossible - something others with more significant credentials have failed to achieve."
Ex-Spurs and Ireland striker Robbie Keane said that in the eyes of the fans the Europa League win had made up for the woeful domestic campaign, and that Postecoglou had backed up his statement that he always wins something in his second season.
In his first season at the club, Spurs were top of the league in October but they eventually finished fifth and suffered early exits in the FA Cup and League Cup.
"There's no getting away from that (league form). I think everybody, certainly the manager, has admitted that," Keane told talkSPORT last week.
"But I tell you what – as someone who's played for Spurs, and my two kids are Spurs fans, I don't think anyone cared at the end, because winning the trophy – at the end of the day it's about winning.
"He's got a lot of stick, Ange, and to be fair to him, he's backed it up by his comment that he made about the second season and he put himself under a lot of pressure but he's done it. So I think now – give him time."
In an interview with Stats Perform, former Tottenham and United States goalkeeper Brad Friedel called on the club to back Postecoglou in the transfer window.
"I hope for Postecoglou they keep him and let him build in the summer and see how the start of the season goes," the American said.

Middlesbrough part ways with manager Carrick
Middlesbrough have sacked head coach Michael Carrick, the second-tier Championship club said on Wednesday after a disappointing season in which they missed out on a spot in the promotion playoffs. Former Manchester United and England player Carrick took charge of Middlesbrough in 2022 and guided them to a fourth-placed finish and the playoffs in his first season, but the club have finished 8th and 10th in their past two campaigns. "Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick. Michael's assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club," the club said in a statement. Carrick made more than 700 club appearances in his career and won five Premier League titles and the Champions League at United under Alex Ferguson. His first stint in management came during an interim spell at United following the sacking of Norwegian manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.

Great Britain's most successful athletes have signed a joint letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to urge the UK Government to support a bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships in London. Over 100 Olympic champions, global medallists, rising stars, and prominent personalities supported the proposal. Together, the final signatories represent over 750 medals won at international competitions–more than 300 of these were gold medals. The athletes are calling for the event to be held once again at the London Stadium, which was the location of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as the 2017 World Championships. Athletes who signed include iconic names such as Sir Mo Farah, Dame Kelly Holmes, Jonathan Edwards, Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, Paula Radcliffe, Dina Asher-Smith, and Daley Thompson. The 2029 Bid The athletes' support added a significant impact to the London 2029 campaign, which was spearheaded by Athletic Ventures, in collaboration with UK Athletics, London Marathon Events, and the Great Run Company. The bid has plans for a world-class championship at the London Stadium, and it was supported by a one-time public investment of £45 million in 2028. Furthermore, a feasibility study estimates the event could deliver over £400 million in economic and social benefits. Hugh Brasher, the event director of the London Marathon and the co-founder of Athletic Ventures, admitted: 'This is the moment to deliver something extraordinary… London 2029 is not a risk; it's about return on investment for the UK. It is set to deliver more than £400 million in economic and community impact across the UK. The time to act is now.' The athletes were aware that without enough support from the government, the opportunity to host could be lost. Therefore, the open letter emphasizes that these kinds of events offer a 'once-in-a-lifetime' experience for both athletes and fans that will surely leave a legacy. Jack Buckner, CEO of UK Athletics and co-founder of Athletic Ventures, declared: 'This is a bid rooted in credibility and ambition… We know what home support can achieve and when our greatest athletes from past and present are unified with one message, their call should not be ignored.'With London 2029, we have the chance to deliver a World Championships that lifts the nation, inspires the next generation, and showcases Britain at its very best. England defender Millie Bright withdraws from Euro squad consideration
MANCHESTER, England :Chelsea defender Millie Bright has withdrawn her name from consideration for England's squad for next month's European Championship, saying she is not at her best. Bright made the announcement in an Instagram post on Wednesday, on the eve of England's Euro 2025 squad selection. "My pride and ego tells me to go but I think the team and the fans deserve more," she wrote. "Right now I'm not able to give 100 per cent mentally or physically." The 31-year-old England vice-captain, who called it one of the hardest decisions she has ever had to make, had already withdrawn from England's recent camp for Nations League games against Portugal and Spain saying she was mentally and physically at her limit after the domestic season. Her withdrawal ahead of the Euros in Switzerland, where England will defend their 2022 title, is a big blow to Sarina Wiegman's squad after veteran goalkeeper Mary Earps announced her international retirement recently. "Football has given me so much, and representing my country has always been my greatest honour," Bright said. "As much as I want to be out there running through brick walls for England and fighting alongside my team mates, stepping back is the right thing for my health, my future in the game and most importantly the team. "It wouldn't be fair for me to take the place and opportunity away from another player who is ready and able to give everything for the badge and country." Fran Kirby also announced her international retirement on Tuesday after learning she would not be named in Wiegman's Euros squad. Considered one of the best defenders in the women's game, Bright helped Chelsea to their sixth successive Women's Super League title last month. They became the first team to go unbeaten in a 12-team, 22-game WSL campaign. Bright has six goals and 88 caps for England and captained the Lionesses at the 2023 World Cup where they finished runners-up to Spain.
