A satirical article said Cape Breton has its own time zone. Google and Meta AI repeated it as fact

Janel Comeau managed to trick Google and Meta with just her words.
The Halifax-based writer had penned a satirical article for The Beaverton, a Canadian parody news site. It said that Cape Breton, the island off the northern coast of Nova Scotia, was adopting its own time zone in a cheeky plea for attention from the rest of the Maritimes.
"We are tired of being ignored. And that is why we will be making the incredibly irritating step of moving the entire island to the new Cape Breton Time Zone, where we will be 12 minutes ahead of mainland Nova Scotia, and 18 minutes behind Newfoundland," Comeau wrote.
But what came next was no joke.
While reviewing her past work, Comeau noticed something odd on Facebook: Meta's AI-generated prompts were appearing under her article — as if it were real news.
"It was like, 'Find out more information about when this time zone change will take effect,' [or] 'How will this affect businesses?'" she told As It Happens host Nil Köksal.
"I realized very quickly: Oh, it's treating this as a real article."
Curious, Comeau asked Meta AI directly, and searched on Google with the question of whether Cape Breton would indeed be getting its own time zone. Both said that yes, it would.
"[I felt] in-between, this is very funny and oh no, what have I done?" she said.
Unpacking search engines and AI
Jian-Yun Nie, a professor in the department of computer science at the University of Montreal, says this incident reflects how artificial intelligence and search engines process content, without necessarily evaluating its truthfulness.
And in Google's case, says Nie, search rankings are driven by a mix of factors: the use of keywords that match a query, how often an article is linked to other content, and its overall popularity — like user clicks.
" So if you ask what is the time zone of Cape Breton and whether there is a new time zone, [Comeau's] article may appear at some top position," said Nie.
Nie says AI systems typically scan multiple related articles to synthesize an answer, but that only works well if the sources are correct, and if the system can distinguish between reliable and unreliable information.
Without understanding context — or satire — they can mistake humour for fact.
According to Nie, AI systems primarily assess reliability based on the source of the information — favouring trusted outlets like reputable newspapers over less credible ones.
However, he says there's no universal standard for determining what's reliable and what isn't.
"How do you trust one person and not another [person]?" Nie said as a comparison.
"It is quite difficult to make an algorithm to mimic exactly the same behaviour of human beings, but the algorithms are trying to do the same thing at this stage."
How do we avoid being misled?
Since the incident, both Google and Meta have corrected their systems.
At the time of writing, Meta AI now responds: "No, Cape Breton Island does not have its own time zone. It follows Atlantic Standard Time and Atlantic Daylight Time, the same as the rest of Nova Scotia."
According to Osmar Zaiane, a University of Alberta professor specializing in AI and data mining, that kind of swift correction is standard procedure, and part of the growing pains of emerging technologies.
"Each time they find a hole like this, they try to fix it," said Zaiane. "You can't think of all possibilities; there's always something that some people discover."
CBC reached out to Google and Meta for comment, but have not yet received a response. Both companies have language in their terms and services disclaiming responsibility for the accuracy of their search or query results.
To avoid being misled, both Zaiane and Nie urge people to cross-check AI-generated answers with multiple sources.
"We should use our own judgment to see whether it can be plausible," said Nie. "In this case, if Google tells you there is a new time zone in Cape Breton, you [should] check other articles."
Fortunately, Comeau's fictional time zone seems to have caused no real confusion or chaos — or at least, none that she has heard of.
"I've not heard of from any tourists who've missed their ferries as a result of this, but maybe they're out there," she said.
"Knowing that somebody may have not gotten to Greco Pizza before it closes — I don't know, it's a heavy cross to bear."

May the Schwartz be with you! Spaceballs sequel set for 2027 — with Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis

This is not a drill, movie fans! A Spaceballs sequel is in the works and set for release in 2027 — with three of its original stars reprising their roles in the cult classic 40 years after the original release. Actor Mel Brooks surprised fans on Friday with a video announcing the return of the 1987 parody of Star Wars and other space flicks, that featured Bill Pullman, Canadian comedy legends John Candy and Rick Moranis, Joan Rivers and Brooks. "I told you we'd be back," Brooks wrote in a post on on the social media platforms BlueSky and X on Thursday, accompanied by a video teasing the forthcoming film, set to be released by Amazon MGM. The video, styled after the opening sequence of the Star Wars films, mocked the number of sequels, prequels and franchise universes that have hit the screens since the last Spaceballs movie. WATCH | Teaser for new Spaceballs movie: "After 40 years, we asked what do the fans want. But instead, we're making this movie," said Brooks in the video, wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with "Spaceballs the Sweatshirt." The teaser video ends with the tag line: "The Schwartz awakens in 2027." (In Star Wars you need "the force;" in Spaceballs you get "the Schwartz.") Moranis returning play Dark Helmet, a send up of Star Wars ' Darth Vader, is a big deal for fans. The 72-year-old, Toronto-born actor, also known for the Ghostbusters and Honey I Shrunk the Kids franchises, has made fewer appearances on screen in recent years, having largely stepped away from Hollywood to focus on raising his children following the death of his wife, Ann Belsky, in 1991. Pullman, the now 71-year-old star of films like 1996's Independence Day and its 2016 sequel Independence Day: Rersurgence, will step back into his Spaceballs leading role as the Han Solo-esque character Lone Starr. And Brooks, who turns 99 years old later this month, will once again play Yogurt — like Yoda in Star Wars, but sparkly gold and with a love of merchandising. He also played the character of President Skroob in the first film. But the sequel will have two very big comedic voids to fill. Toronto-born Candy, who played one of his most memorable roles in the original film as the loveable sidekick Barf, died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 43. Rivers, the revered stand-up comic and TV host, died from complications after going into cardiac arrest during a routine medical procedure in 2014. She was 81. Rivers lent her voice and signature sass to the character of Dot Matrix, an android modelled after Star Wars' C-3PO. It also doesn't appear, at this point, that former Melrose Place actress Daphne Zuniga is coming back to play her Princess Leia-like character, Princess Vespa. WATCH | The trailer for the 1987 Mel Brooks cult classic Spaceballs: According to Deadline, Nope and One of Them Days star Keke Palmer is joining the case, along with Lewis Pullman, who acted in Top Gun: Maverick and is the near look-alike son of Bill Pullman, are also expected to join the cast. Brooks will be a producer on the film, but he won't be writing or directing this time around. Josh Greenbaum, who helmed the Kristen Wiig comedy Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar and the Netflix documentary Will & Harper, is slated to direct. Josh Gad, a 2011 Tony-nominee for Broadway's The Book of Mormon and the voice of Olaf in the Frozen films, is co-writing the script. "I was that child who saw Spaceballs before I ever saw Star Wars and then wondered why anyone would do a dramatic remake of the Mel Brooks classic," Gad wrote in a post on X. "It is therefore the greatest gift of my life to now help take the reins and work alongside Mel and this incredible group to do a sequel to the movie that first inspired George Lucas."

Credo Expects Revenues to Top $800M in FY26: Is the Growth Sustainable?

Credo Technology Group Holding Ltd CRDO has set an ambitious tone for fiscal 2026, guiding revenues of more than $800 million compared with $437 million reported in fiscal 2025. Fiscal 2025 revenues rose 126% year over year amid exponential data growth and rapid AI proliferation, which is driving demand for faster and energy-efficient connectivity solutions. This bodes well for Credo. One of Credo's key strengths lies in its Active Electrical Cables ('AEC') product line, which posted double-digit sequential growth in the fiscal fourth quarter. The growth is driven by its increasing adoption in the data center market. The demand for AECs is increasing as ZeroFlap AECs offer more than 100 times improved reliability than laser-based optical solutions. Moreover, Credo's system-level approach is giving it a competitive edge. It owns the entire stack of SerDes IP, Retimer ICs, system-level design, qualification and production. This integrated approach allows faster innovation cycles and strong cost efficiency. With demonstration of PCIe Gen6 AECs and increasing hyperscaler interest, this product line is expected to remain a growth engine going ahead. Momentum in the optical business bodes well. CRDO achieved revenue targets for this business in fiscal 2025 and expects expansion of customer diversity across lane rates, port speeds and applications to accelerate revenue growth going ahead. CRDO's PCIe retimers and Ethernet retimers continue to witness customer interest, especially for scale-out networks in AI servers. Credo highlighted that the retimer business delivered 'robust' performance in both the fiscal fourth quarter and fiscal 2025, driven by 50 gig and 100 gig per lane Ethernet solutions. This growing demand underscores the increasing importance of high-performance solutions in the rapidly expanding AI-server market. Shift to 100 gig per lane solutions and higher demand for system-level expertise and software capabilities for dealing with AI-optimized architectures bode well for CRDO's retimer business. That said, increasing market competition and macroeconomic uncertainties may impact CRDO's growth trajectory. Credo competes with semiconductor giants like Broadcom Inc. AVGO and Marvell Technology, Inc. MRVL. Taking a Look at AVGO & MRVL Revenue Guidance Broadcom does not provide guidance for the full year but has provided third-quarter fiscal 2025 view. For third-quarter fiscal 2025, Broadcom expects revenues of $15.8 billion, up 21% year over year. Semiconductor revenues are anticipated to grow 25% year over year to $9.1 billion. AI semiconductor revenues are projected to grow 60% year over year to $5.1 billion, whereas non-AI semiconductor revenues are expected to reach $4 billion. AI revenues are benefiting from investments from hyperscale partners in AI XPUs and connectivity solutions for AI data centers. Infrastructure Software revenues are expected to grow 16% year over year to $6.7 billion. Marvell Technology expects revenues to be $2 billion (+/- 5%) for the second quarter of fiscal 2026, indicating growth of 57% year over year. The growth is likely to be driven by demand for AI-driven custom silicon, which has become the biggest component of Marvell Technology's data-center revenues. It expects data-center revenues to increase in the mid-single-digit range sequentially and maintain strong year-over-year growth. MRVL delivered approximately $1.9 billion in revenues for the first quarter of fiscal 2026, up 63% year over year, while data center end-market revenues of $1.44 billion rose 76% year over year. CRDO Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates Shares of CRDO gained 6.5% year to date compared with the Electronics-Semiconductors industry's growth of 6.8%. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research In terms of the forward 12-month price/sales ratio, CRDO is trading at 15.16, higher than the Electronic-Semiconductors sector's multiple of 8.21.
