
KFON announces increase in data limit for BPL users
Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON) Limited, the State Government's initiative aimed at providing free high-speed internet to economically backward families in Kerala, has announced an increase in the data limit for Below the Poverty Line (BPL) category users. The free internet data limit, previously set at 1.5 GB per day at 20 MBPS, has now been enhanced to a monthly cap of 1,000 GB at 20 MBPS. So far, 8,099 free BPL KFON connections have been provided across Kerala, including remote tribal settlements and island regions where digital access remains a challenge.
Eligible individuals in the BPL category can now apply for a free KFON connection online. Applications must be submitted through the link: https://selfcare.kfon.co.in/ewsenq.php, along with the applicant's details and necessary documents. Applications should be made in the name of the ration card holder, and the required location can be accurately marked using the online map tool provided.
For additional support, applicants can send a WhatsApp message with the text 'KFON BPL' to 9061604466, to receive step-by-step guidance through the platform. Applications will be accepted only through the online mode, and services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to areas where KFON connectivity is already active.

4,789 KFON connections provided in Idukki
Kerala Fibre Optic Network Ltd (KFON), the Kerala government's broadband Internet service, is seeing an increase in connections across households, offices, and commercial establishments in the hilly district of Idukki. In Idukki district, 4,789 connections have already been provided through the K-FON project, officials said. According to K-FON authorities, so far, 2,065.519 km of cable have been laid in the district. This includes 302.117 km of OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) cable laid through the transmission towers of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and 1,763.402 km of ADSS (All-dielectric Self-supporting) cables laid through KSEB posts. Currently, 1,323 government offices in the district, including the district collectorate, are using the K-FON network. A total of 392 BPL households in the district have already received K-FON connections. Additionally, 4,263 commercial connections have been provided through local operators. As many as 124 local network operators are collaborating with K-FON for this purpose across various parts of the district. Also, 21 high-value connections have already been provided in the district. Officials said that those who apply for a new home connection can register through the 'Ente K-FON' mobile app or the K-FON website.

Defence battery maker signs MoU with Trichy college for research
Trichy: High Energy Batteries (India) Limited, a manufacturer of batteries for the Indian armed forces and K Ramakrishnan College of Engineering (KRCE), Trichy have signed a memorandum of understanding ( MoU ) to strengthen the industry - academia collaboration in research and development (R&D). While students get industrial internship opportunities in the factory, the MoU shall help the manufacturer to avail technical consultancy support from the college. The factory at Mathur produces batteries for automobiles and high energy density batteries including silver oxide zinc and nickel cadmium being used in aerospace, military, and satellite applications. As per the MoU signed between G A Pathanjali, managing director, High Energy Batteries, and D Srinivasan, principal, KRCE, collaborative activities such as exchange of information on research and academic programmes, expert lectures by engineers and scientists from the manufacturer on batteries, research on electrochemical science, and related technologies are planned in both organisations. S Titus, head, Centre for Research and Funding, KRCE, said that students of chemical, EEE, ECE, and mechanical engineering domains will be benefited the most through the MoU. " Battery manufacturing is an emerging field. Students and faculty visiting the battery production units and laboratories will gain industrial practical exposure. In return, upskilling and reskilling training programs for battery factory employees can be facilitated by us," Titus said. Around 20 students and 20 faculty per year will be directly benefited through plant visits and engineering project opportunities.

Steel cutting held for second SOV for North Star Shipping
The steel cutting ceremony for the second hybrid service operation vessel (SOV) for North Star Shipping (Aberdeen) Limited, UK, was held at the Cochin Shipyard. James Bradford, chief technology officer of North Star Shipping, Jose V.J., and Harikrishnan S. of the Cochin Shipyard were among those who attended. The 86-metre hybrid-electric SOV is designed by VARD AS, Norway. The VARD 4 19 SOV is the second of the two SOVs being constructed by the Cochin Shipyard for North Star. 'The vessel will be powered by four diesel main generating sets from Yanmar and high-capacity Lithium-ion batteries in combination,' said a press release from the shipyard here.
