Pakistan court rejects Imran Khan's bail plea in May 9 cases

The Hindua day ago

A Pakistani court on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) rejected former Prime Minister Imran Khan's petitions seeking post-arrest bail in eight terrorism cases related to the May 9 riots.
Mr. Khan, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, is booked in several cases in Lahore in connection with the May 9, 2023, violence, including for allegedly inciting his supporters to attack government and military buildings, which erupted after his arrest by paramilitary Rangers from the Islamabad High Court premises.
"The Lahore High Court (LHC) has rejected all bail petitions filed by the founder of PTI in connection with eight cases related to the May 9, 2023 cases, including Jinnah House/Lahore Corps Commander House attack and arson incidents," a court official told PTI.
A two-member Bench of the LHC headed by Justice Shehbaz Rizvi announced the verdict on the bail petitions filed by Mr. Khan in eight cases.
The Bench reserved its judgment on Monday after concluding the hearing. The eight cases include the Jinnah House attack, the Askari Tower attack, the burning of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PTI-N) office, the setting of Shadman police station on fire, the burning of police vehicles near Jinnah House, and arson at Sherpao Bridge.
The Anti-Terrorism Court Lahore had earlier rejected Khan's bail pleas in these cases, after which he challenged its decision in the LHC. A counsel for Mr. Khan said that he would challenge the Lahore High Court's decision in the Supreme Court.
Mr. Khan has been in jail for nearly two years in multiple cases.
Separately, his party alleged on Tuesday that Khan has been kept in solitary confinement and his cell's electricity is cut off.
"Imran Khan remains in isolation, denied the basic facilities he is legally entitled to," PTI senior leader Zulfi Bokhari said in a post on X.
Bokhari, who is Khan's close aide, said that "grave violations" of prisoner rights continue against Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi.
"Once again, Imran Khan was only permitted to meet a few carefully selected individuals, while most of his legal and political team was barred from entry. In the sweltering heat, cutting off electricity has become a cruel routine," he said.
Bokhari, a former federal minister, added that Bushra's 14-year-old daughter was made to stand outside the prison for five hours on her first attempt to visit her mother—only to be denied the right to meet her.
"What kind of society or dictatorship punishes a child like this? Bushra Bibi has been gravely unwell for the past week. Despite this, she has deliberately been given a broken air cooler that doesn't work—amounting to deliberate psychological and physical torment," he said.
Criticising the government led by the military establishment, Bokhari said: "Even Saddam Hussein showed more decency toward his opponents. What we are witnessing is a complete collapse of human rights and morality."

EC to review voters' lists in six states to weed out illegal immigrants

As part of the intensive review, poll officials will carry out house-to-house verification to ensure an error-free voters' list, starting immediately with Bihar Aman Sahu New Delhi The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to carry out an intensive review of electoral rolls — that is, the voters' list — this year in six states, beginning with Bihar, to eliminate illegal foreign migrants by checking their place of birth, according to a report from news agency PTI. Assembly elections are scheduled in Bihar later this year, and in five other states — Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal — in early 2026. The move follows crackdowns in various states on illegal immigrants into India, including those from Bangladesh and Myanmar. Eventually, the poll authority will begin special intensive revision across the country 'for the discharge of its constitutional mandate to protect the integrity of the electoral rolls'. In view of the Assembly elections in Bihar, the ECI has decided to conduct its special intensive revision in the state immediately. The last such exercise for the state was conducted in 2003. The terms of the legislative Assemblies of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal end in May–June next year, and a comprehensive review of the electoral rolls in these states will commence by the end of this year, ECI officials told PTI. Amid allegations by opposition parties that the election body has manipulated voter data to help the BJP, the poll panel has taken additional steps during the revision process to ensure illegal immigrants are not enrolled in the voters' list at any stage. An additional 'declaration form' has been introduced for a category of applicants seeking to become electors or shifting from outside the state. They will have to prove that they were born in India before 1 July 1987, and provide documents establishing date of birth and/or place of birth. One of the options listed in the declaration form is for those born in India between 1 July 1987 and 2 December 2004. They will also have to submit documents verifying the date/place of birth of their parents. The ECI said multiple reasons — such as rapid urbanisation, frequent migration, young citizens becoming eligible to vote, non-reporting of deaths, and inclusion of names of foreign illegal immigrants — have necessitated the revision to ensure integrity and preparation of error-free electoral rolls. While conducting the revision, the EC will scrupulously adhere to the constitutional and legal provisions regarding eligibility to be registered as a voter as well as for disqualifications for registration in an electoral roll, which are clearly laid down in Article 326 of the Constitution and Section 16 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, respectively, the poll authority said.

Used Trade Deal threat to get India-Pak ceasefire: Trump says again

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again claimed that he got India and Pakistan to agree to a ceasefire in May using trade deals with the U.S. as leverage. While Pakistan has said Mr Trump had a role in brining about a ceasefire and recently recommended that he be awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, India has consistently pushed back against Mr Trump's claim, with some officials speculating that U.S. may have intervened with Pakistan and told them to stop fighting but such interventions had not happened with the Indian side. In The Hague for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, Mr Trump mentioned India and Pakistan as part of a set of conflicts he claimed he settled during a press conference. Also read: Did Trump cross the line on Kashmir issue? | Explained 'But maybe the most important of all, India and Pakistan, and that wasn't whether or not they may someday have nukes ... like we're talking about with Israel and Iran ... they have nuclear weapons,' Mr Trump said. 'I ended that with a series of phone calls on trade,' Mr Trump said, adding that the fighting was getting very bad. 'If you're going to go fighting each other, we're not doing any trade deal,' Mr Trump said, adding that the Indian and Pakistani sides said to him, ' No, no, no, you have to do a trade deal.' 'I had the General [Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir] who's really was very impressive. The General from Pakistan was in my office last week. You know, Prime Minister [ Narendra] Modi is a great friend of mine. He's a great gentleman. He's a great man. And I got them to reason,' he said, repeating that he had told both men that there would be no trade deals with the U.S. if India and Pakistan were going to fight.

After English, a lesson in French: Shashi Tharoor slams Pakistan in Russia

Shashi Tharoor. (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor , widely recognised for his eloquence in English, drew widespread praise this week for speaking fluent French while strongly criticising Pakistan's inclusion in an upcoming anti-terrorism conference organised by Russia. During a meeting in Moscow with Russian Liberal Democratic Party chairman Leonid Slutsky, Tharoor responded in French to Slutsky's remarks regarding a proposed summit on combating terrorism. Slutsky had announced Russia's plans to host a conference early next year involving the parliamentary heads of six countries: Turkey, Iran, Russia, India, Pakistan, and China. He emphasised the need for concrete action, not just discussion, on the issue of terrorism. In a striking moment, Tharoor replied in French, directly addressing the problem of Pakistan's involvement. "There is a country that unfortunately provides a safe haven for these terrorist groups," Tharoor said. "They have their headquarters, they train terrorists in their country, fund them, arm them, and send them to other nations. It's difficult for us to ignore the fact that they enjoy patronage in Pakistan. " The video of Tharoor's French-language exchange with Slutsky quickly went viral on social media, earning him praise for both his linguistic skill and diplomatic clarity. Following the meeting, Tharoor posted on X: 'Good to renew my acquaintance with my Russian counterpart, Mr Slutsky, who had visited Parliament in New Delhi a few months ago with a Russian delegation. We exchanged views on regional peace, Operation Sindoor , and possible avenues of future parliamentary cooperation.' Tharoor has long been vocal about Pakistan's links to terrorism and reiterated India's concerns abroad while leading the Indian delegation under the government's Operation Sindoor global outreach initiative.
