El Salvador arrests human rights lawyer helping deported migrants

Police in El Salvador arrested a prominent human rights lawyer and critic of President Nayib Bukele who helps imprisoned Venezuelan migrants deported by the United States, prompting appeals on Monday for her release.
A coalition of rights groups including Amnesty International said the arrest of Ruth Eleonora Lopez reflected a trend of growing authoritarianism under Bukele, an ally of US President
Donald Trump
The 47-year-old was detained late Sunday, accused of embezzling state funds when she worked for an electoral court a decade ago, the public prosecutor's office said.
'Neither her family nor her legal team has managed to find out her whereabouts,' Cristosal, the rights group she worked for, said in a statement.
It called the authorities' refusal to disclose Lopez's location or grant her lawyers access 'a blatant violation of due process'.

Mistakenly deported man Kilmar Abrego Garcia returns to US to face charges

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man mistakenly deported from Maryland to El Salvador by the Trump administration, has returned to the United States to face criminal charges of transporting illegal immigrants to the US, Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Friday. Advertisement Abrego Garcia faces two criminal counts in an indictment filed in federal court in Tennessee on May 21, more than two months after Abrego Garcia's March 15 deportation, court records showed. Bondi said Salvadorean President Nayib Bukele agreed to return Abrego Garcia to the US after US officials presented his government with an arrest warrant. 'The grand jury found that over the past nine years, Abrego Garcia has played a significant role in an alien smuggling ring,' Bondi said in a press conference. In a statement, Abrego Garcia's lawyer, Andrew Rossman, said it would now be up to the US judicial system to ensure he received due process. Advertisement 'Today's action proves what we've known all along – that the administration had the ability to bring him back and just refused to do so,' said Rossman, a partner at law firm Quinn Emanuel.

Mistakenly deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia returning to US to face charges, report says

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man the Trump administration acknowledged was wrongly deported to El Salvador, is on his way back to the US, ABC News reported on Friday. He will face criminal charges for allegedly transporting undocumented migrants within the US, ABC reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Abrego Garcia's case became a lightning rod over US President Donald Trump's immigration policies which have seen the administration move to ramp up deportations of undocumented migrants. The Supreme Court had told the administration to seek Abrego Garcia's return. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the report. Trump and El Salvador President Nayib Bukele had previously said they had no power to return Abrego Garcia to the US. Denmark's ban on full-face veils to be extended to schools, universities, PM says

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Thursday her government planned to extend the ban on full-face Islamic veils in public places and apply it to schools and universities as well. She also said she wanted to see an end to prayer rooms at universities but stopped short of calling for an outright ban. 'God has to step aside. You have the right to your faith and to practice your religion, but democracy takes precedence,' she told Danish news agency Ritzau. In August 2018, Denmark banned the wearing of full-face Islamic veils like the burka and niqab in public places, with offenders subject to a fine. Human rights campaigners and religious groups have criticised the ban as discriminatory and as a violation of both freedom of religion and women's freedom of choice. People protest in Copenhagen in 2018, as the new ban on garments covering the face is implemented.
