From Kolkata derby match to RCB's IPL win: After 45 years, India witnesses another sport related tragedy
Nearly 45 years apart, two tragic days, August 16, 1980 in Kolkata and June 4, 2025 in Bengaluru, serve as grim reminders of how the unifying joy of sport can turn into unimaginable disaster.
Back in 1980, the iconic Kolkata derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal at Eden Gardens (before the Salt Lake Stadium era) descended into chaos as violent clashes between rival supporters claimed 16 young lives.
On Wednesday, what was meant to be a historic celebration, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first IPL title in 18 years, ended in heartbreak. As over a lakh fans gathered to catch a glimpse of their heroes, especially Virat Kohli, the victory parade turned deadly, with at least 11 fans losing their lives in a stampede.

It was Eden Garden in 1980 and Garden City on Wednesday, that witnessed tragedy. And both could have been avoided.
On that fateful August afternoon at the Eden Gardens, more than 70,000 spectators had thronged the galleries and Mohun Bagan's speedy right winger Bidesh Basu was felled by East Bengal's side back Dilip Palit, who was notorious for his rough tackling.

According to the reports of that time, the referee of that match, late Sudhin Chatterjee did not have control on the proceedings and once Bidesh and Dilip got into fisticuffs, the tension percolated in the stands.
Stone pelting broke out between supporters of both teams, and the Kolkata Police failed to anticipate the stampede-like situation that followed. As panic gripped the crowd, chaos ensued, with people running in all directions, desperate to escape.
A haunting black-and-white image from that day still lingers — fans clinging to the second tier of Eden Gardens, trying to avoid being trampled. Sixteen spectators, aged between 18 and 60, who had stepped out with joy and excitement to witness the derby, returned lifeless — their bodies brought back in matadors, as there were no hearse vans back then.
Today, the day is observed as 'Football Lovers' Day' in Kolkata. But on that fateful afternoon, law and order had collapsed, and the 'City of Joy' had nothing joyful left to offer.
On December 9, 2012, a similar kind of tragedy could have happened as things got out of hand during a Kolkata Derby with Mohun Bagan's Rahim Nabi being hit on forehead by a stone from the opposition team's stand. But the sight was East Bengal defender Arnab Mondal escorting the Mohun Bagan star to safety.
However, the match was abandoned and there was free for all on the streets of Eastern Metropolitan Bypass with as many as 40 people injured in clashes. There were policemen who were also injured in the scuffle with supporters of both sides.
There were two incidents back in 1969 during Australia's Test series in India in Kolkata (Eden Gardens) and Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The incident in Mumbai was after a debatable decision that saw the back of S Venkataraghavan. The spectators who were listening to All India Radio commentary were infuriated and wreaked havoc. There was fire in the stands but fortunately no deaths.
The stampede like situation at Eden Gardens had more to do with erstwhile corrupt officials of Cricket Association of Bengal, who had printed fake tickets above capacity and there were at least 20,000 people more.
The grapevine was that some of the CAB officials hid under their tables when police were trying to evacuate the spectators.
There was no live match but star struck youth wanting to get a glimpse of Virat Kohli led to this unmitigated and irreparable loss. Eleven lives lost and it could be more.
When these youngsters (including children) gathered at MG Road, Brigade Road, Cubbon Park or Vidhan Souda, it was all about passion and excitement to meet their heroes but the 11 set of parents will have to live with this tragedy that could have been avoided.
Other major spectator deaths during sporting events:
Hillsborough Disaster (1989): A stampede at the Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, England, resulted in 97 deaths and hundreds of injuries during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. It is still one of the worst of all crowd death incidents related to sports.
Heysel Stadium Disaster (1985): A stadium wall collapsed at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels, leading to the deaths of 39 supporters during the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus.
Lima Stadium Riots (1964): In terms of death toll, this is the biggest sporting crowd tragedy in the last 60 years. It was an Olympic Qualifier between Argentina and Peru. There were riots leading to more than 300 people getting killed and nearly 1000 injured.
Luzhniki Stadium Crush (1982): It was a UEFA Cup match between Spartak Moscow and Haarlem FC and 66 fans died, mostly teenagers making it the biggest sporting tragedy in Russian history.
Houphouet-Boigny Stampede (2009): 19 fans died and 135 seriously injured in a stampede during a World Cup qualifier between Ivory Coast and Malawi in Abidjan.

'Action taken against those visibly responsible': Siddaramaiah defends government's response in Bengaluru stampede case
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for politicising the stampede at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured. Responding to allegations from the BJP that the Congress-led state government was scapegoating the police, Siddaramaiah told ANI that action had been taken against officials found 'visibly responsible' and 'negligent in their duty.' 'They [BJP] are doing this for politics. I don't do politics. We have taken action against those who were found visibly responsible,' the Chief Minister said. 'The government acted only when pressure mounted. The real accused are Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and Home Minister G Parameshwara. They should be investigated,' Vijayendra said. Following the tragedy, the government suspended multiple senior police officials, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda. He was replaced by senior IPS officer Seemant Kumar Singh, who officially took charge on Friday. The list of suspended officers includes Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash, DCP (Central) Shekhar HT, ACP Balakrishna, and Cubbon Park Police Inspector Girish AK. No official version of Bharat Mata portrait, so cannot be allowed in govt events: Kerala government
The Left government in Kerala on Friday made it clear that it was not in agreement with the use of the Bharat Mata portrait at the Environment Day event at the Raj Bhavan here as the picture was not authorised as the official version by the Constitution or the Indian government. Kerala Agriculture Minister P Prasad , who boycotted the event at the Raj Bhavan a day ago over the use of the portrait, said that those in constitutional offices cannot convert government programmes into political events . Prasad, while talking to a TV channel, said that no Bharat Mata portrait has ever been acknowledged as the official or authorised version by the Constitution or any of the governments in power since independence. "So, I enquired with the Raj Bhavan about the floral tributes and asked them to send me a picture of the portrait. The portrait was the one used by the RSS and was not recognised or authorised as an official version, I informed the Raj Bhavan that we cannot offer floral tributes to it," he said. The minister said that the Raj Bhavan in response said they cannot remove the portrait. On being told that the opposition was criticising the lack of response on the issue by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Prasad said that the Congress-led UDF was trying to gain political mileage out of it especially in view of the upcoming bypoll in Nilambur assembly constituency. After knowing Raj Bhavan's stand, the state government relocated the event to the Secretariat's Durbar Hall and the Raj Bhavan went ahead with its programme. Later, in a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan, the Governor said, "Whatever be the pressure, from whichever quarters, there will be no compromise whatsoever on Bharat Mata." In his speech at the Raj Bhavan programme, the Governor said two ministers--state Education Minister and Agriculture Minister--had agreed to attend the function but they did not turn up for the event. Bengaluru stampede: 4 held after suo motu FIR, senior police officers suspended as blame game continues
On Thursday, the police had filed a suo motu FIR accusing the RCB franchise, DNA Entertainment and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) administrative committee for going ahead with the celebrations, despite not being given the requisite permissions. Among the four held is Royal Challengers Bengaluru marketing head Nikhil Sosale. The others arrested are Kiran Kumar, Senior Event Manager at DNA Entertainment Networks; Sunil Mathew, Vice-President of business affairs; and another employee, Sumanth. Bengaluru: Two days after 11 people were killed and several injured in a stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru Police have arrested four persons, including a top RCB official and three from the event management firm that organised the team's IPL victory celebrations. Hours later, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the suspension of Bengaluru city police chief B. Dayananda and at least four other senior officers, holding them responsible for the tragedy. The officers were suspended for facilitating a situation that 'went out of control and brought a lot of misery, loss of precious life and embarrassment to the government', among other reasons. The victims of Wednesday's stampede were all aged under 33, with the youngest being 13 years old. The team won its maiden IPL trophy later that night and fans poured out on the streets in several localities in celebration, which lasted till the early hours of Wednesday. The police were skeptical as they expected hundreds of thousands of people to descend around the stadium, the FIR said. The police were aware of the challenges in providing security and managing crowds since it was not a scheduled match, and denied permission on the same grounds, including that it would disrupt traffic in the central business district on a weekday, it added. But RCB, DNA Entertainment and KSCA insisted on holding the celebrations on 4 June, the FIR further said, and despite being denied permission, the organisers posted on RCB's X handle at around 7 am about the entire day's events, including the celebrations. This information was then shared widely on social media and also by news outlets. A meeting of senior officers was then held to discuss provision of security and other arrangements to manage the crowd. The police had also brought in additional force, according to the FIR. RCB's post had said that the team would land at 1.30 pm Wednesday at HAL Airport, and then make their way to Hotel Taj West End to rest up. At 4 pm, they were supposed to be felicitated by the chief minister, deputy chief minister and others on the steps of the Vidhana Soudha, which was to be followed by a victory parade in an open-top bus from the Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy stadium, a distance of about 1 km. But the police denied permission for a parade, and the organisers then announced that the celebrations would be held at Chinnaswamy Stadium. The complaint further said that adequate arrangements had been made, but lakhs of fans turned up near the stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000. 'KSCA management committee and RCB franchise officials failed to decide on how to grant fans entry into the stadium. Consequently, thousands of fans gathered on the roads outside the stadium. Around 3.10 pm, the gates at the locations with the largest crowds were opened to let people inside. This led to a severe stampede at the gates, resulting in stampede and commotion,' it read. It added that the police, private and VVIP security personnel then tried to control the crowd and rescue those trapped in the stampede, managing to avert a larger tragedy. RCB, DNA and KSCA have been booked under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 118 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt by using dangerous weapons or means), 121 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 190 (liability of members of an unlawful assembly for offences committed in pursuit of a common object), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging their duty), and 125 (12) (acts endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. 'Want justice, not scapegoats' The Siddaramaiah government Thursday formed a one-man judicial commission to probe the stampede. Former Karnataka High Court judge Michael D' Cunha will look into the alleged lapses to figure out who was responsible for the mishap. The report will be submitted within a month. The government has so far deflected all questions on the role of political leadership in the tragedy. Police officers that ThePrint spoke to said that it was on the insistence of political leaders that the celebrations took place. Meanwhile, opposition parties have questioned Siddaramaiah over 'making scapegoats' out of the suspended police officers.
