Sze Fei-Izzuddin cling on to world No. 1 spot
KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani held their nerve to keep their place at the summit of the world rankings — and in doing so, ensured they remain the leading pair in what is now a historic Malaysian one-two in men's doubles.
The world No. 1 duo survived a major scare at the Indonesia Open today, rallying to beat world No. 28 compatriots Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub–Tan Wee Kiong 21-14, 16-21, 21-14 in a tense second-round clash at the Istora Senayan.
Had they lost, Sze Fei–Izzuddin would have been overtaken by fellow Malaysians Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik, who are projected to move up to No. 2 despite a first-round exit, thanks to the rolling points system and key upsets in the draw.
But by advancing to the quarter-finals, Sze Fei–Izzuddin retained enough points to hold onto top spot with a projected total of 91,090 — narrowly ahead of Aaron–Wooi Yik's 89,870.
Sze Fei–Izzuddin could now look to extend their lead depending on how far they go in Jakarta.
It's still a landmark moment for Malaysian badminton — with two pairs set to be officially ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the world when the new rankings are updated next Tuesday, a feat never before achieved in the country's storied history in men's doubles.
Aaron–Wooi Yik, the 2022 world champions, gained ground after Denmark's Kim Astrup–Anders Skaarup Rasmussen were ousted in the second round by Japan's Takuro Hoki–Yugo Kobayashi.
The Danes, who were defending semi-final points from last year, are expected to fall to 87,520 and drop to third in the rankings.
It was a pressure-filled outing for Sze Fei–Izzuddin, who had quarter-final points to defend from last year and needed the win to avoid being dethroned just two weeks after becoming Malaysia's first new men's pair to reach No. 1 since Goh V Shem–Tan Wee Kiong in 2016.

In the second round of the Super 1000-level tournament, the world No 1 pair held off a tough challenge from compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong to seal a 21-14, 16-21, 21-14 victory in 54 minutes. The India Open champions will next face Indonesia's Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani. Joining Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin are Malaysia Masters champions Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who defeated compatriots Junaidi Arif-Yap Roy King 14-21, 21-11, 21-15. The world No 7 pair will go up against India's Satwisairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty. In the mixed doubles, second seeds Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei lived up to expectations by reaching the quarter-finals after ousting Denmark's Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch 21-9, 21-12 in just 31 minutes. The Malaysian world No 1 pair were beaten 21-19, 9-21, 21-19 in a pulsating 56-minute match that had the home crowd at the Istora Senayan, Jakarta on their feet cheering. With this defeat, hopes of an all-Malaysian semi-final between Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin and their compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun failed to materialise. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin have met the world No 8 pair thrice so far with the Indonesian pair winning twice. Earlier, world No 7 pair Wei Chong-Kai Wun defeated India's Chiraq Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy in straight games to qualify for the semi-finals. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin won the India Open championship title in January but failed to advance beyond the quarter-finals since then. They have won eight BWF titles so far with the Super 1000 series being elusive. The Indonesian Open is one such event offering a total cash prize of US$1.45 million. The winners of the doubles events stand to earn US$107,300 (RM452,289), and the runners-up US$50,750 (RM214,520). The semi-finalists take home US$20,300 (RM85,898). Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin will take home US$9,062 (RM38,296) as quarter-finalists.

Istora Senayan feels like home for Wei Chong-Kai Wun
KUALA LUMPUR: Istora Senayan is fast becoming a second home for men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who are now just one win away from reaching their third consecutive final at the famed Jakarta venue. The world No. 7 were runners-up at the Super 1000 event last year and lifted the Super 500 Indonesia Masters title at the same venue in January. On Friday, Wei Chong-Kai Wun produced a commanding performance to stun world No. 22 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty 21-19, 21-16 in just 43 minutes — their first win over the Indian pair in five meetings. "We focused on our game plan even though they were faster and stronger," said Wei Chong. "Because of the draught, we kept our returns flat and avoided lifting the shuttle too much — that helped us control the match." Kai Wun added: "It feels great to finally beat them. It gives us a real confidence boost for the semi-finals. So far, everything is going well." Next up, Wei Chong-Kai Wun will seek revenge against Indonesia's world No. 8 Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani, who edged world No. 1 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin in the other quarter-final. "The pressure is always there. It's about learning how to overcome it. That's something we need to improve," he said. Despite the defeat, Sze Fei-Izzuddin will retain their world No. 1 ranking next week, while compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are set to rise to No. 2. The other Malaysians in the semi-finals are Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah (women's doubles) and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (mixed doubles).
