No Sundowns players as Broos names Bafana Bafana youthful side

JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named a youthful 23-man squad for next month's international friendlies.
South Africa will take on Tanzania and Mozambique as they prepare for World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations later this year.
There are no less than nine debutants in South Africa's squad for the upcoming fixtures.
Orlando Pirates dominate the list with Mamelodi Sundowns players left out but there's a good reason why the Brazilians were omitted.

Bafana's Broos praises Pirates youngster ahead of friendly fire

'His game is very mature. He takes good decisions,' said Broos, according to News24. Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has praised Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi ahead of the upcoming international friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique. ALSO READ: Pyramids edge Sundowns to win Champions League Bafana will take on Tanzania at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday, before going up against Mozambique at Loftus Stadium in Tshwane on June 10. Bafana's Broos – 'A good defender' 'His game is very mature. He takes good decisions,' said Broos, according to News24. 'He is a good defender … not tall, but he wins aerial duels … (and is) good in build-up play when attacking.' The 19 year-old Mbokazi became a regular for Pirates this year under Spanish head coach Jose Riveiro, and has now earned his first Bafana call-up. Broos has selected seven first-time call-ups, with Mamelodi Sundowns' players unavailable due to their participation in the upcoming Fifa Club World Cup. Mohau Nkota, Deano Van Rooyen and Simphiwe Selepe are also new to the Bafana squad from the Buccaneers. Under Broos, Bafana are currently in a fantastic position to qualify for the 2026 Fifa World Cup finals. There remains, however, the possibility of them being docked three points by Fifa for fielding an ineligible player – Teboho Mokoena – in the World Cup qualifying win over Lesotho in March. 'We have to wait,' added Broos. 'But if Fifa follows the procedure, there is nothing because there was no complaint. I know that, five days after the game, only then Lesotho wanted to make a complaint. I think they were put under pressure by Nigeria. 'Now it's not sure that Zimbabwe will play against us here in South Africa (Zimbabwe were set to play Bafana in South Africa as they do not have a stadium at home that meets the required standards). 'They are trying to organise a stadium in Zimbabwe to host the match. But maybe that stadium will not be okay, then there are talks that they could take the game to Rwanda. 'You see, things are going on behind the scenes and I think it's coming from our friends in Nigeria.' 'The games in September and October will be the most important games for Bafana Bafana in the last four years,' 'Why should we start panicking?' 'It is very important for everyone, for South African football, the players, me, and the supporters for us to go to the World Cup. Let's hope … Fifa will do what they have to do and say that there is no complaint, and it stays like it is… 'We would be in a very comfortable situation looking at the gap between us and Rwanda and Nigeria. Even if they take those three points, why should we panic? ALSO READ: Gallants coach Ouaddou makes shock decision 'If you see our last six games in the qualifiers – why should we start panicking? Sundowns' Cardoso reacts to defeat and Zwane non-selection

'This group has a lot of quality players and obviously Themba is one of them,' said Cardoso. Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso issued a candid assessment following their 2-1 defeat to Pyramids FC in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final which took place at the 30 June Stadium on Sunday night. Pyramids edged the overall tie 3-2 on aggregate after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg. The Egyptian club made history by claiming their first continental championship. Cardoso insisted that the Cairo-based outfit displayed greater desire to lift the trophy. ALSO READ: Pyramids FC edge Sundowns to win Champions League 'When I say that it's important to compete at the highest level, that is exactly the answer that I've given so many times this season when playing Champions League,' said a crestfallen Cardoso. 'Why is it so difficult to beat teams from the north of Africa? It's because those teams can play football but they also play at a high level. Every duel is a life changer and every ball they fight for, they fight with all the energy they have. 'In some moments, I felt like those were things that were missing from our part. I don't think that we were worse when playing football against Pyramids. 'It was shown in both matches but Pyramids were competent and capable in both matches to position themselves in a way that prevented us from playing the way we wanted. But most of all, they gave their lives for every ball they played for and that's what makes a difference in the final sometimes.' One of the night's biggest talking points was Cardoso's decision to leave veteran midfielder Themba Zwane on the bench. Zwane, a crucial figure in Sundowns' 2016 title-winning campaign, was an unused substitute, a move the Portuguese tactician chose not to justify. 'I totally understand what kind of an answer you want and you are looking for but it's not time to speak about individual performance of players. This group has a lot of quality players and obviously Themba is one of them,' Cardoso added. 'It's not a matter of accepting that we lost but it's a matter of accepting that we didn't play a game at a level that we should have played in the first three parts of the game. When we did, by not worrying about the other side and only worried about what we could do we could do, we have even won.'

How Kaizer Chiefs target Fiston Mayele became the toast of African football

TOAST OF AFRICA Kaizer Chiefs are targeting Congolese striker Fiston Mayele (left), whose crucial goal for Pyramids in the CAF Champions League final against Mamelodi Sundowns has increased his market value, making him a sought-after player in African football. Seen here: Sundowns' Mosa Lebusa challenges Mayele for the ball. Picture: Weam Mostafa/BackpagePix With Mamelodi Sundowns going into the CAF Champions League second leg on the back foot as they had conceded an away goal, it was vital they scored first in Cairo on Sunday. Enter Pyramids striker Fiston Mayele. The 30-year-old Congolese forward struck in the 23rd minute at 30 June Stadium, which effectively put the contest out of reach for the Betway Premiership champions. Though the aggregate at that stage was 2-1 to Pyramids, it meant Sundowns had to score twice to come away victorious. As Pyramids doubled their lead in the second half with Ahmed Samy, it didn't actually change anything as two goals would still be needed for the SA outfit. Iqraam Rayners did pull a goal back with a quarter of an hour remaining, but there would be no further change to the scoreline as Pyramids ran out victors.
