Your messages are about to look completely different as ads are rolled out on all devices

Daily Mail6 hours ago

WhatsApp is set to roll out ads for the first time ever — marking a stunning reversal of one of its founding principles.
The free messaging app said adverts will be rolled out to its global users in the next few months.
The new ads will appear in the 'status' section of the app under the 'updates' tab away from the main chat area.
WhatsApp's co-founder Brian Acton made the company's mantra 'No ads! No games! No gimmicks!'. Even after its $19 billion acquisition by Meta in 2014, ads were kept at bay.
As recently as 2023 Meta's WhatsApp boss denied reports the messaging service was considering introducing adverts.
'False. We aren't doing this,' Will Cathcart told the Financial Times.
But now, the company is making a U-turn — as Meta looks to wring more revenue from one of its most widely used products.
WhatsApp is the world's most popular messaging app, with 2.8 billion monthly users globally — though it trails Apple's iMessage in the US, where it has about 100 million users.
Whatsapp said adverts are being introduced now as a space has emerged that will allow them to be placed without interfering with personal chats.
'This was a longtime request that we had from businesses, and they care about preserving people's personal spaces,' Nikila Srinivasan, vice-president of business messaging at WhatsApp said of the changes.
'People want to use WhatsApp for more than messaging close friends and family, and looking back a year and a half ago, that is part of the reason we introduced this Updates tab,' Srinivasan explained.
'If you're someone that uses WhatsApp for personal messaging and you never come to this tab, you won't see [advertising].'
WhatsApp insists its messages will remain end-to-end encrypted, meaning only those sending and receiving messages can see them.
However, some user information - such as location, language and what channels they follow - will be used to determine which adverts they're pushed.
WhatsApp's updates tab attracts 1.5 billion daily users and its status section is the 'the world's most used stories product' according to the app.
Other updates will include paid subscriptions to creator's channels and certain channels will be able to pay a fee to promote their content.
Meta's WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart previously denied reports of adverts being introduced
Other recent updates have left users furious with some claiming they are ditching the app altogether.
In April Meta introduced an AI icon on WhatsApp for its British users.
Like ChatGPT, the feature allows users to ask questions to the tech giant's digital chatbot.
Meta says the tool can be used for 'just about anything', from how-to tips, game ideas, lunch recipes and finding out the latest football scores.
In the US, Apple's iMessage is dominant with 1.8 billion active devices compared to WhatsApp's 100 million users.

California's Driving Law Is Getting a Lot More Strict

Distracted driving is still an issue Let's be honest, you've probably done something like this before. You are out on a drive to work, going back home, to the grocery store, or wherever, and you hear the notification sound from your phone, which immediately gets your attention. Lo and behold, you're glancing at texts, scrolling through Outlook, or fumbling across tabs on a social media app when you're supposed to have your eyes on the road. 0:02 / 0:09 Nissan's revolutionary self-driving tech hits Japan's streets Watch More Despite in-car software like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto becoming a must-have item in everything from Kias to Rolls-Royces, smartphone-based distracted driving is still a problem out on the road. According to a 2023 survey of US drivers conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), over a fifth of drivers said that they engaged in at least one smartphone-based distracting activity while driving, including 'making video calls, watching videos or using social media, on most or all of their trips.' Source: Getty Images California is getting extra strict on distracted driving Although you may think there may be some situations where it is perfectly okay to hold your phone while driving, like looking at directions on a navigation application, a recent state appeals court decision in California will have you wrong. On June 3, the Court of Appeal of the State of California for the sixth appellate district ruled that a state law prohibiting the use of handheld cellphones while driving also applies when drivers are found to be holding phones running a navigation app like Apple Maps or Google Maps. The court ruled that while the driver doesn't need to be swiping or tapping on the screen, looking at the map with your phone in your hand is enough for a police officer to pull you over for a ticket. Woman in car looking at smartphone — Source: Getty Images The Court of Appeals in the Golden State reached this decision in the case of a defendant named Nathaniel Gabriel Porter, who received a $158 ticket in Santa Clara County for holding his cellphone in one hand and looking at a mapping application while driving. Porter initially lost his ticket challenge in his first court appearance, but appealed the decision with the appellate division of the Santa Clara County Superior Court, which reversed the fine because it was determined then that he was technically not 'operating' a wireless telephone as stated in the state law. Court documents state that at the time, it was determined that Porter was holding and looking at the mapping application on the phone without 'active manipulation.' 'The court concluded 'there must be something equated to carrying out a function, actively using or manipulating the phone while holding and driving,' court documents read. 'This may include talking, listening, emailing, browsing the internet, playing video games, or otherwise engaging with the smartphone. Merely observing GPS directions on the phone does not constitute the kind of active use or manipulation to trigger an infraction under the statute.' Policeman asking a driver for identification — Source: Getty Images However, the California Court of Appeal for the Sixth Appellate District reversed that decision on June 3, concluding that the definition of the word 'operating' under the above law 'prohibits all use of a handheld phone's functions while driving, including looking at an application on the phone' and that 'allowing a driver to hold a phone and view a mapping application, even if not touching the phone's screen, would be contrary to the Legislature's intent in enacting [the law],' the court's decision read. Final thoughts Porter is still on the hook for the initial $158 traffic ticket, but this story shows that the state of California is clear in its vision to reduce distracted driving. The data about distracted driving is pretty straightforward. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 3,000 people in the U.S. were killed in 2022 due to distracted driving, with phone use being one of the leading culprits. Genesis Surges: Why This Luxury Brand is Quietly Dominating

It isn't often Genesis, Hyundai Motor Group's luxury division, makes headlines, but don't count the South Korean marque out just yet. Hyundai Motor Group is gaining ground Hyundai Motor Group, which comprises Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia, has managed to hold on to its position as the fourth best-selling automaker for the second consecutive year, trailing behind Toyota, General Motors, and Ford. In 2024, Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia sales amounted to 1.7 million vehicles in the United States, a 50,000 increase over the previous year. With sales up across all three brands year-over-year, it's clear Hyundai Motor Group is gaining ground, but it was Genesis that posted the highest percentage growth of the three brands. 0:06 / 0:09 Walmart is selling a 'heavy duty' $89 step ladder for $48, and shoppers say it's 'sturdy and secure' Watch More 2025 Genesis G80 — Source: Genesis Last year, Hyundai and Kia posted a 4% and roughly 1.8% increase in sales, respectively. Genesis, on the other hand, saw its sales jump from 69,175 to just over 75,000 units in 2024, an 8% increase. In December 2024 alone, the luxury brand saw its sales jump 20% compared to the previous year. Considering how competitive the luxury segment can be, that massive jump is a positive indicator that Genesis is gaining traction among its rivals. Genesis has a diverse lineup Genesis's lineup may be small, but it's fairly diverse. Featuring sedans in three sizes, a handful of SUVs, and electrified models to boot, Hyundai's luxury division has its bases covered. As the 2026 model year rolls around, several Genesis models are expected to get refreshed and redesigned, including the Electrified GV80, which carried over unchanged from the 2024 model year. Genesis GV60 — Source: Genesis Kicking off the EV lineup is the Genesis GV60, which starts at $52,350. Available in rear- and all-wheel drive, the GV60 crossover boasts over 450 horsepower at its peak. The all-electric model features fast charging capability and over 290 miles of range on a single charge in its most efficient form. You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. The Genesis Electrified GV70 is available from $66,950, with Hyundai's fast charging technology. While the Electrified GV70 features a lackluster 236-mile range, it can charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 20 minutes. Like the gas-powered GV70 SUV it's based on, the all-electric SUV features a posh interior paired with plenty of performance. 2026 Genesis Electrified GV70 — Source: Genesis Moving over to the SUVs, the 2025 Genesis GV80 starts at $58,200 and comes with new wheel designs, an updated grille, and a 27-inch touchscreen display. The luxury SUV features two engine options: a 300-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and a 375-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6. Featuring seating for up to seven passengers, the GV80 is a great family hauler, especially since it can tow up to 6,000 lbs. Introduced as a new model for the 2025 model year, the Genesis GV80 Coupe is a slimmed-down version of its three-row sibling. The Coupe features a fastback roofline that creates a more aggressive aesthetic and reduces seating to two rows. Its powertrains reinforce the GV80 Coupe's styling, with a turbocharged V6 and a V6 with a turbo and electric supercharger that put 375 horsepower and 409 horsepower on tap, respectively. That combination of power and style will cost you at least $79,950. 2025 Genesis G80 — Source: Genesis The Genesis G80 received a mild refresh for the 2025 model year. The luxury midsize sedan gained a revised grille, new headlights, and revamped front and rear bumpers. Like its siblings, the G80 features a 27-inch touchscreen that's home to both the gauge display and infotainment system. Priced from $57,100, the 2025 Genesis G80 is well-positioned to take on more established luxury midsize sedans, including the BMW 5 Series. Arguably the king of the Genesis lineup, the G90 full-size sedan starts at $89,700. The model launched with few changes from the 2024 model year, but don't let that disappoint you. The G90 boasts a premium interior comparable to that of the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The full-size sedan shares the GV80 Coupe's V6 engine offerings, with up to 409 horsepower channeled to all four wheels. In order to elevate the driving experience, Genesis fitted its flagship sedan with either an electronically controlled suspension or air suspension, depending on trim level. 2024 Genesis G90 — Source: Genesis Genesis has already begun unveiling models for the 2026 model year. The G70 sport sedan's spec sheet sees quite a few changes, and not all of them are good. While some models gain updated wheel designs and aluminum trim, others lose their dark chrome grille and alloy pedals. Interestingly, the top trims lose their electronically controlled suspension, and the power trunk has been cut from the range entirely. The 2026 Genesis G70 starts at $42,500, a $350 increase from the 2025 model year. Like its sedan sibling, the Genesis GV70 sees its price increase by nearly $1,800, putting the 2026 model's starting price at $47,985. The biggest change comes in the form of the 27-inch touchscreen display that's found in other Genesis models. The SUV has also gotten some minor changes to the headlights, grille, and wheels. Otherwise, the turbo four and V6 engines carry over from the previous model year. Genesis's future is heating up It's not uncommon for automakers to create performance variants of their existing lineup, and Genesis is no exception. Considering Hyundai has the N Line, it was really only a matter of time before Genesis got the same treatment. Back in 2024, Genesis announced the Magma program with the reveal of the hot GV60 Magma Concept. The program currently has seven concept vehicles on its docket, including the GMR-001 Hypercar. At the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Genesis confirmed that the GV60 Magma is expected to head into production sometime this year for a 2026 model year release. The all-electric crossover will likely feature a similar setup to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, which boasts 641 horsepower. It wouldn't be out of the question to expect higher performance from the GV60 Magma, though. After all, Genesis does need to stay a step above Hyundai, right? 2026 Genesis GV60 Magma Concept — Source: Genesis Genesis Magma Racing has also joined the 2025 European Le Mans Series in order to establish a foundation for the racing team. The project plans to debut the GMR-001 Hypercar in the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship. The team plans to use its first year as a year of learning, but they're still vying for a spot in the winner's circle. 'I want to learn as much as possible,' said Jamie Chadwick, one of the team's drivers. 'The aim is to develop as much as possible as a team and lineup, and hopefully that will pay dividends by the end of the year. We have a great team and can fight for results. I'd be lying if I said I didn't want a podium.' Final thoughts Genesis is a brand that we don't usually hear much about. Considering it's a luxury marque with sales that barely topped 75,000 units last year, that isn't too surprising, though. With 8% growth year-over-year, there's no doubt Genesis is slowly gaining prestige among the luxury segment. Adding the Magma program and its high-powered cars will only garner the brand more attention. I, for one, am very interested in the GV60 Magma… About the Author Joseph Pudlewski View Profile
