Deep depression triggers Kol showers, brace for rainy Friday

Kolkata: A deep depression that crossed over to the land near Sagar Island on Thursday triggered moderate rain in Kolkata. The Alipore weather office recorded 15.5 mm rainfall till Thursday night.
Met officials said the system is likely to trigger more rain till Friday afternoon. While this weather system accelerated the monsoon's arrival in North Bengal on Thursday, six days in advance, Met officials have yet to forecast monsoon's date with Kolkata.
The city woke up to a mostly sunny morning, with cloud cover in between. But clouds from the deep depression system started reaching the city sky when it began crossing the land between 10.30 am and 11.30 am, triggering widespread showers.
Although the prediction for the city was heavy rain till late night, the rain amount remained moderate. However, Met officials have not ruled out rain till Friday afternoon with squally wind at night.
The rain also dragged the maximum temperature to 29.7°C, 5.4 notches below normal and the lowest this month. The minimum was 25.8°C,1.4°C below normal.
"Moving at 22 kmph, the deep depression crossed land between Sagar Island and Khepupara at a distance of 40 km southwest of Canning, 130 km west-southwest of Mongla, and 190 km west of Khepupara," said Somnath Dutta, head of Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Kolkata.
The system's speed slowed to 5 kmph as it moved northeastwards. Till reports came in last, the system was close to Canning and was about 100 km west-southwest of Mongla. "This system will continue to trigger more rain in almost all parts of Bengal in the next few days," said Dutta.
The system is likely to rescind into a depression by Friday morning and then become a well-marked low-pressure area by Saturday. Met officials said the window for an intense shower in Kolkata was Thursday and Friday afternoon.
Met officials said they are keeping tabs on this system that could affect monsoon reaching the city in about three days. The normal monsoon arrival date in North Bengal is June 5, while it is June 10 for parts of South Bengal, including Kolkata.
"Monsoon has covered Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Jaipaiguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Conditions are favourable for the further advance of southwest monsoon over some more parts of Bengal in the next couple of days," said H R Biswas, head of the weather forecast section at RMC.

After weeks of high temps, heatwave, mercury falls below normal in Kashmir
After weeks, the day temperatures in Kashmir valley dropped below normal on Friday following overnight rains and gusty winds. The maximum temperatures which were running above normal for the past many weeks, particularly since May 18, when the valley witnessed heatwave-like conditions, fell 3 to 6 degrees below normal. The summer capital Srinagar, which experienced mild showers during the day as well, recorded a maximum of 22.4 degree celsius on Friday, down from 28.2 degree celsius on Thursday. The city recorded 15.4 mm of rain on Thursday and Friday. Owing to the heatwave-like conditions across Kashmir since May 18, the temperatures were hovering 6-8 degrees above normal. On May 22, according to MeT, Srinagar had recorded the third highest maximum temperature of 34.4°C after the second highest of 35°C on May 31, 1956. However temperatures started coming down in the past few days more particularly after intense rains and hailstorms across the valley on Tuesday. There were rains on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday and also mild showers at scattered places on Friday. The gateway into Kashmir, Qazigund recorded at maximum of 22.3 degree celsius while the tourist resort of Pahalgam witnessed a high of 20.0 degree celsius. At both the places, the mercury fell 2.6 to 2.8 notches below normal. In North Kashmir, Kupwara recorded a maximum of 20 degree Celsius as against the normal of 26.5 degree Celsius. In the tourist resort of Gulmarg, which remains snow covered in winter, witnessed a highest of 12.2 degree Celsius, some 4.6 notches below normal. Meanwhile, the meteorological centre in Srinagar reiterated its prediction of stormy weather for next couple of days. 'On May 30 and 31, the weather is expected to be generally cloudy with possibility of spell of light to moderate rain/thundershowers at most places with heavy rain accompanied with intense showers and gusty winds at few places,' MeT director Mukhtar Ahmad said. He predicted about possibility of landslides and mudslides at few vulnerable places. 'Intense showers may generate flash floods at isolated places,' he said. He said that June 1 and 2 will witness brief spells of light rain and thundershowers at isolated places. 'June 4-6 will be generally dry with brief spells of rain/showers towards late afternoon at isolated places,' he said.

Temp reflects cooling trend, but locals feel the humidity
Indore: Intense humidity continued to give an uncomfortable sticky feeling to residents despite temperature readings reflecting a cooling trend in the city on Friday. On Friday, the maximum temperature in the city was recorded at 34.3 degrees Celsius — a 2 degree drop from Thursday's 36.3 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature stood at 24.5 degrees Celsius, a degree below normal. Though temperature was low, residents continued to grapple with intense humidity. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, relative humidity reached 82% in the morning, making the air heavy and oppressive during the morning hours, while it dropped to 44% in the evening. Senior Meteorologist Dr Divya E Surendran said that cyclonic circulations over Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, along with an active trough system, are influencing the region's weather. "There are chances of light rainfall in Indore and surrounding areas over the next four days. But significant rainfall is unlikely. The system is likely to impact the eastern parts of MP on Saturday. From June 2, the distribution of rainfall and thunderstorm activity will once again increase across the state. Thus, no heatwave warning has been issued," she added. For the past three days, the city saw relatively mild day temperature, fluctuating around 33–35 degrees Celsius — in stark contrast to last year when the mercury crossed 44 degrees Celsius on May 25. Despite this, the high humidity made daytimes particularly taxing. "Every morning the skies look promising with thick clouds, but by noon, sun starts beating down again. The evenings bring little relief. The heat would be bearable if not for this suffocating humidity," said Pooja Yadav, a homemaker from Vijay Nagar. Another resident, 28-year-old software engineer Anurag Jain said, "The ACs run all day, but the moment you step outside, the sweat just pours. We're waiting for a good spell of rain to break this cycle." The Met department has forecast light showers for Indore and nearby districts, including Ujjain, Dhar, and Ratlam, between June 1 and 2, with winds possibly reaching 50–60 kmph.
