Ross: Glasgow City still disappointed to miss out on title objective

STV News22-05-2025

Leanne Ross insists Glasgow City are just as disappointed as Rangers in losing out on the SWPL title as the sides prepare to meet in the Women's Scottish Cup final.
Rangers lost 1-0 to Hibernian at Ibrox on Sunday to hand the Edinburgh outfit their first title in 18 years and to add to their misery, City's convincing 2-0 home win over Hearts took them above Jo Potter's side and into second place with a Champions League spot as a reward.
Speaking at the national stadium, Ross was 'unsure' if City, who last won the trophy in 2019, had a mental advantage over their opponents going into the showpiece at Hampden Park on Sunday, but admits her side fell just short of their pre-season aims.
The former Glasgow City midfielder said: 'Obviously, we're both very disappointed in terms of that objective of winning the league this season.
'It was a tight fight between all teams in the top half of the table. It was a difficult season.
'And obviously, neither of us have reached the objective of winning the title.
'So the next best thing for us was obviously that second place and guaranteed European football.
'So yes, we've come out on top there, but there's still disappointment within our camp that we never achieved our overall objective of winning the league.'
While Potter told her players not to 'sulk' in the wake of their disappointment at the weekend, Ross revealed a 'real excitement' in Glasgow City's training ground as the players battle for starting places at Hampden, which will host the final for the third successive season.
She said: 'The players know there are jerseys to play for in terms of that starting line-up, so we're trying to keep them calm and keep their feet on the ground so that the preparations are right.
'But there's definitely an excitement about the place ahead of the game.'

Arsenal dealt blow as dream target Nico Williams responds to transfer approach

Arsenal have seen their chances of signing Athletic Bilbao superstar Nico Williams take a hit after the winger was reported to have confirmed interest in a move elsewhere Nico Williams has told Bayern Munich he is open to joining them in a blow to Arsenal hopes. Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of the Athletic Bilbao winger and any plan to get a deal over the line has now only been made more difficult. Vincent Kompany's side have entered the running to land the star with Bayern chiefs Max Eberl and Christoph Freund holding talks with Williams' representatives. The Bundesliga giants have already missed out on Florian Wirtz this summer and have turned their attention to the Spain international, according to Sky Germany. ‌ Bayern are set to see space open up in their squad with the exit of Leroy Sane. The former Manchester City ace knocked back a move to the Saudi Pro League but travelled to Turkey on Wednesday ahead of a switch to Galatasaray on a free transfer. ‌ To be successful, Bayern will need to stump up Williams' €58 million (£48.1m) release clause to prise him away from Bilbao. But it is the Basque star's salary that could prove most prohibitive. Mirror Football understands that the 22-year-old wants to be paid more than £300,000-a-week to make him one of the bigger earners in Europe. That figure itself made a move difficult for Arsenal, while Barcelona, who have also been heavily linked with Williams, saw their plans to sign the player damaged by the demands. Athletic Bilbao have not given up hope of retaining their talisman's services either however. Reports in Spain claim that the La Liga side will offer an increase in salary and an immediate release clause should he extend his deal until 2027. After seeing Williams turn down multiple transfers away from the club in the past, the Basque side do not think its implausible to happen again. Athletic will hope their qualification for the Champions League proves helpful to their cause. Williams finished this season with 11 goals and seven assists for Bilbao after truly breaking out in 2024 with an impressive campaign as Spain won the Euros. Arsenal have long admired the winger but have been less keen to take on his wage demands. His current club are adamant they want to retain Williams' services over cashing in however. "I believe we have a winning and interesting project for everyone, and Nico is part of that project, just like many other players," Bilbao president Jon Uriarte told Spanish outlet El Correo. ‌ "The project becomes easier if we keep our players - and I believe Nico and the rest of the squad have a very exciting year ahead." Speaking after he decided to remain with Bilbao last summer, Williams said: 'Many teams want you, I've had many offers to do things that another player would have done, but I'm happy here, Bilbao is my home. My heart is red and white." Though he hinted that may be a temporary situation when he added: "I had a talk with my parents and my brother, and we decided it was best to stay for another year.'

Jack Grealish left out of Man City's Club World Cup squad

The 29-year-old's omission had been widely anticipated and will raise further doubts over his future at the Etihad Stadium. Grealish (right) appears to have fallen out of favour with manager Pep Guardiola (left) (Martin Rickett/PA) The midfielder, signed for £100million from Aston Villa four years ago, has fallen down the pecking order at City since playing a starring role in their treble success of 2023. He made just seven Premier League starts in the 2024-25 campaign and was notably not summoned from the bench as City went down to a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final last month. He was then left out of the matchday squad for the final Premier League game of the season at Fulham altogether. With City's overhaul of the squad continuing apace with four new signings this week, there is growing speculation Grealish could leave. He has been linked with a number of clubs in England and in Europe. As expected, Kevin De Bruyne will also not be involved in this summer's tournament in the United States. The Belgian playmaker is leaving City this summer but could still have played before his contract expires on June 30. The 33-year-old looks set to join Serie A champions Napoli when he officially becomes a free agent. New signings Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijani Reijnders and Marcus Bettinelli are all included in Pep Guardiola's squad, which could have featured up to 35 names. Rayan Ait-Nouri could make his City debut at the Club World Cup following his move from Wolves (Mike Egerton/PA) There will be an opportunity to register more players for the knockout stages should City progress that far. City begin their campaign against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia next Wednesday before facing further group games against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Juventus. Midfielder Mateo Kovacic is missing through injury, while James McAtee is on international duty with England Under-21s.
