Teen crash survivor awarded for recovery from life-threatening accident
TEXARKANA, Texas (KTAL/KMSS)—CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System recognized a local teen for his recovery and the healthcare specialists who helped him on his journey at its annual trauma survivors ceremony on May 21.
May is National Trauma Survivor Awareness Month. Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 44, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These injuries include motor vehicle crashes, drug overdoses, falls, and other accidental events.

17-year-old Shaun Van Kam survived a life-threatening crash in October 2023. At the ceremony, Shaun was reunited with healthcare workers involved in his recovery and presented with the 'Spirit of a Survivor' award.
'It was a very foggy morning,' said Summer Van Kam, Shaun's mother, recalling the day of the accident. 'Shaun was heading to school and came to a stop sign and unfortunately had impact with an 18-wheeler.'
Shaun underwent extensive treatment following the crash, including intensive care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and relearning basic life skills.
'Shaun has been through pain that could have crushed him, trauma that could have defined him, and moments that could have made him give up,' said Lauren Jamison, trauma program manager at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System. 'We are grateful that God didn't let the story end there.'

Jameson recalled praying with his mother in the emergency room when Shaun was first brought in as they watched the medical team work to save his life. Shaun's recovery has allowed him to return to school and live as a typical, energetic teen.
'It's so touching the amount of people that prayed for us and reached out to us,' Summer Van Kam said. 'I don't know where we'd be today if we hadn't had that support.'

Kennedy launched a fitness initiative, challenging the population to walk 50 miles, hoping to inspire Americans to become more active. 'She served the American people as first lady, and she respected the boundaries and messages that certain pieces of fashion and jewelry meant to the general public and her husband's presidency,' Kumar Nair explained, 'it felt like the watch was a signifier of her new life, a private citizen free to wear what she wanted, and a flag of her social status and life as a widow.' After that, the ex-first lady was rarely seen without it and it became a staple for her, making it a well-loved accessory. After her death in 1994, Sotheby's held a sale of her belongings, which did not include her watch. It wasn't until 2017 that Christie's announced a sale of the watch. An unidentified bidder won the accessory for $379,500, which was later revealed to be Kim Kardashian. The story now continues as the watch takes its new home at the V&A. 'Jackie was so private, and we are still left with traces and clues of her life. There is something to be said about keeping parts of your life private, particularly when you are serving a public life,' Kumar Nair noted. Moderna announces FDA approved mNEXSPIKE, new vaccine against COVID-19
Moderna (MRNA) announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, FDA, has approved mNEXSPIKE, a new vaccine against COVID-19, for use in all adults 65 and older, as well as individuals aged 12-64 years with at least one or more underlying risk factor as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 'The FDA approval of our third product, mNEXSPIKE, adds an important new tool to help protect people at high risk of severe disease from COVID-19,' said Stephane Bancel, Chief Executive Officer of Moderna. 'COVID-19 remains a serious public health threat, with more than 47,000 Americans dying from the virus last year alone. Claim: Donald Trump Jr. said driving through Arlington National Cemetery reminded him of "all the sacrifices we'd have to make — giving up a huge chunk of our business and all international deals." Rating: According to internet rumors, Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of U.S. President Donald Trump, said a visit to Virginia's Arlington National Cemetery conjured reflection on the hardships and sacrifices his family has faced over the years. Arlington National Cemetery's website describes the site as a place to honor "those who have served our nation. … This impressive landscape serves as a tribute to the service and sacrifice of every individual laid to rest within these hallowed grounds." While this particular rumor about Trump Jr. has percolated online for years, it resurfaced in May 2025 following criticism of a social media post by the president on Memorial Day that offered scathing remarks about his political opponents rather than reflecting the purpose of Memorial Day to honor fallen service members. Many posts sharing the claim, such as those on TikTok (archived) and Facebook (archived), quoted the junior Trump as saying, "As we drove past the rows of white grave markers … I also thought of … all the sacrifices we'd have to make — giving up a huge chunk of our business and all international deals." This quote is correctly attributed to Donald Trump Jr. He wrote those words in his 2019 book, "Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us." The full passage from the book read: Meanwhile, it also took two months for me to realize the enormity of what my father had accomplished, and the weight of the job that he'd won. It was the day before the inauguration, and we were driving into Arlington National Cemetery, where he was to lay a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I rarely get emotional, if ever.
