Mizoram declared India's first fully literate state
Mizoram has become India's first fully literate state, Chief Minister Lalduhoma declared on Tuesday.
The chief minister made the announcement in Aizawl in the presence of Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary.
Mizoram had a literacy rate of 91.3%, according to the 2011 Census. This made the state the third most literate in the country.
Following this, the New India Literacy Programme, a centrally-sponsored scheme, was implemented to educate the remaining persons, the Union education ministry said.
The literacy rate in Mizoram has crossed the 95%-mark, which is considered by the Union education ministry to be equivalent to full literacy.
On Tuesday, Lalduhoma said that becoming a fully literate state was a ' historic moment in the journey' of Mizoram. 'It is a transformational milestone, one that speaks to the collective will, discipline, and vision of our people,' the chief minister said.
Lalduhoma said that the high level of literacy in the state must be sustained 'through continuous education, digital access and vocational skill training'.

Hubballi: While the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) was introduced with a single emergency number, 112, across the nation, it seems city police are not trained on how to respond to callers. In some cases, police insist callers be present at the spot, whereas ERSS assures confidentiality for the caller. In other cases, police show leniency towards marriage processions with DJs and assure callers that the marriage party has obtained permission, even though DJs are completely banned. As my friend argued the same, the police then asked for the shop address and other details. It shows that police themselves are not trained on ERSS," he said. We ourselves sensitised them that no loudspeaker can be used after 10 pm and DJs are never allowed. After this, they arrived and stopped the DJ usage," he informed. Requesting anonymity, a retired inspector said that ERSS is an integrated system to address emergencies of citizens. Oppn criticises Union agri minister over no compensation announcement to rain-affected farmers in Maharashtra
Pune: A day after Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited Pune city, the opposition criticised him, claiming that the minister made several announcements but did not announce any compensation for the farmers of the state who faced losses due to recent heavy rain. The state witnessed unusually heavy rain in May, causing damage to crops like onion, bananas and vegetables. While the state govt has assured help to the distressed farmers, members of the opposition said since the Union agriculture minister was in the state, he should have announced some aid. "The agriculture minister spoke about using technology to improve production and to give clean saplings to farmers. We are not against the use of technology in agriculture, but at the moment, the priority should have been announcing immediate compensation to farmers who incurred huge losses due to heavy rain," Raju Shetti, founder of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, said. The state govt has announced panchanama of all farms that suffered damages due to the heavy rain. The opposition members, however, said the process of evaluation of damage should finish fast, and the govt should start providing actual compensation. "We have not witnessed such heavy rain in May. No reason to delay for 23 months, says Congress after government announces census schedule
Hours after the Centre announced the Census schedule, the Congress on Wednesday said there was no reason to delay the exercise for another 23 months and slammed the Modi government for not meeting 'deadlines'.
