Measles case reported at Sea-Tac Airport, 4th WA case of 2025
The Brief
A Canadian resident that flew into Sea-Tac Airport last week was confirmed to have been infected with measles, likely exposed while traveling abroad.
This marks the fourth measles case in Washington this year, though health officials say the risk to the general public remains low.
The person's vaccine status is unknown.
SEATAC, Wash. - Health officials in western Washington say a Canadian resident flew into the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport while infected with measles.
The case was recently confirmed, though the individual was in the Seattle area on April 6 and 7. This marks the fourth measles case in Washington this year.
The infected person was likely exposed while traveling abroad, according to Public Health - Seattle and King County. Their vaccine status is unknown.
Timeline
Officials provided a timeline and list of locations where the individual was in western Washington:
April 6, 5:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. - Sea-Tac Airport S Concourse (Gate S10), International Arrivals (Customs), Baggage Claim (Carousel 20), Gina Marie Hall (southernmost airport exit)
April 6-7, 8:45 p.m. to 7 a.m. - Comfort Suites Tukwila Airport (7200 Fun Center Way)
April 7, 4:45 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. - Sea-Tac Airport S Concourse (Gate S1)
The times include the estimated period when the individual was at the location and two hours after, as the measles virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area.
Local health officials say the risk to the general public is low, as most people in King County have immunity to measles through vaccination. However, anyone who was potentially exposed is asked to remain up to date on the MMR vaccine, and to contact a healthcare provider if you develop an illness with fever or an unexplained rash.
Those exposed and not immune to measles would likely become sick between April 13-28. If you think you were exposed and develop symptoms, avoid potentially spreading the disease by calling a clinic or hospital first before going in person.
"Measles is highly contagious and if you don't have immunity, you can get it just by being in an area where a person with measles has been," said Elysia Gonzales, Medical Epidemiologist for Public Health – Seattle & King County. "We've seen an increase in measles cases around the world and in the U.S., so it's an important time to check your vaccination status and get vaccinated if you aren't protected."

Mexico's Sheinbaum accepts invitation to G7 summit in Canada
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday confirmed her participation in the G7 summit in the Canadian mountain resort of Kananaskis later this month. Other countries whose leaders have confirmed they will join the gathering of economically powerful democracies include India, South Korea, South Africa and Indonesia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been invited but has not yet indicated whether he will attend the meeting in the Canadian Rockies. Sheinbaum, who is seen as on the left politically, is hoping to hold her first bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump during the two-day summit, which starts on Sunday. The two leaders have spoken by phone a number of times, but have not met in person. The aim is to create a global framework for cooperation with Trump's administration over the years ahead, Sheinbaum said on announcing her decision to attend. Mexico has been strongly affected by Trump's tariff policies, with increases on the import of cars, steel and aluminium hitting the country's economy. Other key points of difference between the two neighbours are cross-border migration from Mexico into the US and Trump's attempts to interdict the flow of the opioid fentanyl into the US. The annual G7 summits bring together the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Other leaders are often invited to attend.

Healing Shingles Naturally: How East Meets West in Fighting Viral Pain and Brain Risk
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection that causes a painful, blistering rash and often affects older adults or those with weakened immune systems. But since the COVID-19 pandemic, shingles has been appearing in unexpected age groups—raising new concerns about immunity, stress, and long-term health risks. Without timely treatment, this condition can lead to serious complications, including persistent nerve pain and even cognitive decline. In an episode of the 'Health 1+1' program, Jonathan Liu, a Canadian professor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, discussed both Western and TCM approaches to treating the infection, along with immune-boosting medicinal recipes that may help reduce the risk of shingles. The Importance of Early Treatment The primary treatment for shingles involves antiviral medications such as famciclovir or valacyclovir, which are typically taken orally. In more severe cases, intravenous acyclovir may be used, particularly in hospitalized or immunocompromised patients. Liu emphasized that early intervention is crucial. Ideally, antiviral therapy should begin before blisters appear. The medication works by suppressing viral replication rather than repairing tissue damage; therefore, starting treatment more than three days after the onset of blisters may significantly reduce their effectiveness.

Canadian wildfires prompt another air quality alert for coastal Maine
Jun. 9—The Maine Department of Environmental Protection says smoke from Canadian wildfires is again impacting air quality in Maine. Ground-level pollution concentrations in southwest coastal Maine were in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" level Sunday and have continued in that range into Monday. The elevated level is most likely to impact children, older adults, and people with respiratory or heart disease. While the pollution concentration level may drop during the day Monday, another plume of wildfire smoke is expected to move in from the east and reach the Maine and New Hampshire coast by afternoon, according to the DEP. That plume from the western Canadian wildfires broke off over Newfoundland and Labrador and has now moved south into Nova Scotia. The smoke is expected to move move out Tuesday, but it could return in the coming days as wildfires continue to burn across Canada, the DEP said. The air quality could cause people with asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or other conditions to experience reduced lung function and irritation, according to the DEP. Officials say it is possible that even healthy adults who exert themselves outside could notice side effects, such as coughing, shortness of breath, throat irritation and mild chest pain. People can protect themselves by avoiding strenuous outdoor activity, closing windows, and circulating indoor air with a fan or air conditioner. Last week, smoke from the Canadian wildfires led the DEP to issue a similar air quality alert for much of Maine's coastline Wednesday and Thursday. Dozens of wildfires burning in the western provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, including one more than twice the size of Los Angeles, have forced thousands of Canadians to evacuate their homes in recent weeks.
