Slaughterhouse staff played wolf sounds to sheep and ‘inflicted immense pain, fear and distress'

Independent05-03-2025

Halal abattoir staff slammed sheep hard onto concrete floors and played wolf howling recordings to the terrified animals as they were dying, footage reveals.
In a string of acts captured by hidden cameras, workers also breached animal-welfare laws in ways that an academic said would have inflicted 'immense pain, fear and distress'.
Sheep were inadequately killed, showing signs of life and suffering for up to four minutes after their throats were cut and when workers started dismembering them, an expert's report says.
But an official food-standards inspector who was watching failed to act, according to the film-maker who shot the scenes in secret.
The video, taken at a no-stun slaughterhouse in Arley, Warwickshire, showed five allegedly illegal types of activity, the analysis suggests. It began with the 'extreme rough handling' of animals by staff as sheep were slammed into floors and walls, and workers smacked a door into their faces, the video shows.
A mechanical restrainer of sheep for slaughter appeared ineffective, so many sheep escaped after their throats had been cut, according to Jenny L Mace, an associate lecturer in animal welfare and ethics at the University of Winchester.
Her report details how abattoir workers moved, hoisted and started to dismember sheep that were still conscious, with some animals showing signs of life more than two minutes after their throats were cut and even when workers had started to cut their legs off.
The investigation, carried out by animal-rights film-maker Joey Carbstrong, also showed sheep jumping barriers to try to escape as they were thrown or dragged into the restrainer before being killed.
Since the abattoir expanded last year, residents of Arley have been up in arms about the stench from it and the increase in large tankers driving through the village to remove blood, carcasses and wastewater.
Abattoir chiefs say about 1,000 lambs and sheep a week are slaughtered there.
Mr Carbstrong, who used several cameras to film over 10 days, said the incidence of breaches of animal-welfare laws was likely to be higher still than the report documented because Ms Mace analysed only 1h 46mins out of more than 200 hours of footage.
He criticised an official from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) who, he said, was filmed apparently taking no action when she 'witnessed a botched slaughter'. The footage shows her observing as animals' throats are cut.
Under the Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing law workers must wait at least 20 seconds before moving sheep.
Sheep hung on shackles were recorded moving for up to 25 seconds after slaughter, and at one point an animal was seen lifting its head, but the official took no action, it's claimed.
The report also identifies 31 'problematic welfare indicators', pointing to 'immense pain, fear, and distress for the sheep'.
'Charges should be brought against this slaughterhouse and/or staff for the numerous illegal practices,' Ms Mace writes.
She also found that sheep were forced to witness the bleeding and hoisting of other sheep close by, as well as sheep being forcibly held down by workers before having their throats cut.
Several times, workers mocked sheep that struggled to escape or that were about to be killed. And at one point wolf howling sounds were played over the sound system.
Workers resorted to conventional bolt guns on sheep that did not die when their throats were cut.
'Many Muslims also accept a reversible stun; thus, dialogue should continue with Muslim religious leaders to help further implement this,' the report says.
The proportion of UK slaughtered sheep that are killed with stunning – which means animals cannot feel pain or suffer – fell last year, from 77 per cent in 2022 to 71 per cent, government figures show, suggesting more are being killed for the halal market.
Mr Carbstrong, who made Amazon Prime film Pignorant, said: 'There can be no justification for the horrific treatment of animals we have filmed at this facility; the suffering and terror these animals have endured is unimaginable.
'The fact this is a non-stun slaughterhouse was never the point of the investigation.'
The slaughterhouse website says: 'We take every precaution to ensure that all of our products are slaughtered strictly in adherence with the Sharia'ah.
'When sourcing our lambs, we ensure that we are only working with trusted suppliers who have the same ethos surrounding animal welfare, in line with our values as Muslims.'
It's understood the FSA carried out a welfare assurance visit shortly after the secret filming had happened.
The slaughterhouse owner told The Independent that three staff were sacked as soon as the family business saw the footage and they were working with the FSA to prevent any recurrence and talking to lawyers.
He said: 'I was shocked and so upset. It's really, really annoying. What happened is completely unacceptable.'
The business was increasing welfare checks, adding cameras to eliminate blind spots and bringing in more experienced managers, he said.
He said it was a new operation and he was inexperienced when filming took place.
'All I can do is assist the authorities with their inquiries and make sure we do whatever they think is appropriate, and take the relevant steps to make sure that this never ever happens again,' he said.
A spokesperson for the FSA said: 'We are taking this issue very seriously. We have already taken immediate action to suspend several individuals from handling live animals and have increased onsite presence during all slaughter operations whilst we look into these allegations further.
'We await any further footage and meanwhile we continue to look into these allegations. We will not hesitate to take more action as we have a zero-tolerance approach to animal welfare breaches.'

Kyle Enos: Man who made and sold poisonous diet pills is jailed

A man who made and sold poisonous diet pills has been jailed. DNP is poisonous to humans and has been banned for human consumption in the UK. The industrial chemical, which is officially known as 2,4-Dinitrophenol, has been illegally sold as a pill for weight loss, according to police. Kyle Enos, 33, from Maesteg, Bridgend, was jailed for three years on Thursday after a multi-agency investigation. DNP can cause serious physical side effects or death, according to the Food Standards Agency. Enos was found to have purchased the pure form sodium salt of the powder from China via the dark web. He made the pills using cutting agents and a pill press in his bedroom and advertised them on a website he had made. After receiving orders via email, he would ship the products within the UK and beyond, disguising them as vitamins and minerals. Following the investigation, he was charged with multiple drug offences and pleaded guilty at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on 1 May. 'Extremely ill or even dying' He was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court for one count of member of public import/acquire/possess/use of a regulated substance without licence, one count of supply regulated substance to member of public without verifying licence and one count of supply of regulated poison by person other than a pharmacist. He was also found to have failed to comply with a serious crime prevention order (SCPO) after a previous conviction for the supply of the Class A drug Fentanyl. Detective Constable Kieran Morris, of South Wales Police's regional organised crime unit (ROCU) Tarian, said Enos was supplying the pills "with no safety precautions in place", which could have led to buyers "becoming extremely ill or even dying". "Tarian ROCU are committed to safeguarding members of the public not only within our region, but across the United Kingdom and beyond," he added. Alison Abbott, head of the National Crime Agency's prisons and lifetime management unit, said SCPOs were "a powerful tool" to help prevent those convicted of "serious offences" from reoffending after their release from prison. "This case should serve as a warning to others," she added.

Serious Fraud Office make three arrests after dawn raids in bribery investigation

UK fraud investigators have made three arrests in dawn raids targeting alleged bribery by a British company during the construction of a Dutch datacentre for Microsoft. The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) said on Wednesday that it was targeting UK company Blu-3 and former associates of the global construction firm Mace Group. Individuals at Blu-3 are suspected of paying more than £3m in bribes to the people linked to Mace Group. More than 70 investigators searched four homes and one commercial property in London, Kent, Surrey and Somerset on Wednesday morning, the SFO said. Authorities in Monaco simultaneously searched a suspect's premises with help from the UK. Three people were arrested for questioning, and evidence was seized for further examination. Microsoft is not under investigation. Blu-3, founded in 2004, helps to manage large construction projects. It has helped Mace in the construction of the Shard in London, the UK's tallest building, and was involved also in the regeneration of London's Battersea power station and the Chelsea Barracks. It has also worked on the UK's HS2 railway project, for Transport for London and for the struggling Thames Water. More recently, Blu-3 has focused on datacentres, amid a boom in demand for buildings to house the computer servers on which internet and artificial intelligence companies rely. It made revenues of nearly £100m in the year to March 2024, and said it had a 'strong pipeline of work for 2025', according to accounts published before the arrests. Blu-3 first entered the datacentre market in the Netherlands in 2014. Its website refers to a 'large-scale datacentre project on behalf of a blue chip software company' managed by Mace in Middenmeer, north Holland. Mace Group, which employs more than 7,400 people, made revenues of £2.4bn in 2023. The UK-headquartered company has worked on a wide range of projects, including Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the Tate Modern gallery extension. The SFO has faced scrutiny over the length of its investigations, as well as other troubles such as the £250m cost of an investigation into Kazakh mining company Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation which resulted in no charges. Nick Ephgrave, the director of the SFO, said: 'Paying bribes to do business undermines our financial markets, the reputation of British companies and the rule of law and will not be tolerated. 'Today's action is a reminder that we will take rapid and robust action to tackle suspected bribery and corruption wherever it appears – at home and overseas.' The solicitor general and Labour MP, Lucy Rigby, attended one of the arrests in north London this morning. A Mace spokesperson said: 'Mace has a zero tolerance approach to breaches of our code of ethics and takes any allegations of bribery extremely seriously. We are committed to fully supporting the Serious Fraud Office in investigating allegations against any former associates of the group.' Blu-3 and Microsoft were approached for comment.

‘Body double', final moments & last words to aide… Secret docs on Hitler's death 80 years ago today released by Russia

Read on the see Hitler's yellowed teeth and the bunker where he spent his last days THE HITLER FILES 'Body double', final moments & last words to aide… Secret docs on Hitler's death 80 years ago today released by Russia A BOMBSHELL bundle of documents detailing Hitler's death has been released by Russia's intelligence service 80 years later to the day. The stash includes Hitler's rotted teeth, showing evidence of his cyanide suicide, and the last known photograph of him. 10 New details about Hitler's suicide have been unearthed in the documents Credit: Getty 10 Hitler's teeth - showing evidence of his cyanide dose - were part of the released stash Credit: East2West 10 A picture from inside Hitler's bunker Credit: Time & Life Pictures Also declassified were originals of statements and interrogation notes of the Führer's valet, Heinz Linge, and personal assistant, Otto Günsche. Linge revealed a 'deluded' Hitler killed himself partly because he was 'afraid' of being 'caught while trying to escape from Berlin'. Both Hitler aides fell into Soviet hands after the war, and their testimony was crucial to Stalin understanding Hitler final days as his Nazi regime collapsed. Linge was reportedly the first to enter the room after Hitler's suicide, and helped carry and burn the corpse with Günsche and others. While the broad testimony of the pair has been long known, this is the first time the original sources - long hidden in Soviet KGB archives - have been published, and there are new details. A Russian archivist appeared on video going over Linge's account, which even details the clothes Hitler and Eva Braun wore when they killed themselves. He said: 'Testimony about Hitler's reasons for taking his own life - he believed it was utterly pointless to continue the fight. 'He was afraid of being caught while trying to escape from Berlin. 'There was also his severe physical condition, which was beyond doubt, as well as his delusions of grandeur, which would not allow him to bow to the victor or enter into negotiations with him.' Morbid footage also showed Hitler's teeth which were used to identify him. Hunt for neo-Nazis who celebrated Hitler's birthday in UK pub with swastika cake Russian defence ministry channel Zvezda TV reported: 'Here they are, particles of universal evil. 'Fragments of Adolf Hitler's jaw, a man whose very name makes even water molecules take on hideous forms. 'The remains of the one responsible for the deaths of over 26 million of our fellow citizens. 'Today [30 April] marks exactly 80 years since the death of the main culprit of the bloodiest war in human history. A strange feeling.' Linge wrote in his 1945 testimony: 'At the moment of suicide, Hitler was dressed in a white shirt with a white turn-down collar and a black vest, a grey double-breasted uniform jacket made of fine gabardine, long black trousers of fine gabardine, thin black paper socks, and black leather half-boots. 'His wife was dressed in a fine silk dress, very thin silk stockings, and shoes with wedge heels (possibly of Italian make). 'Three canisters of petrol, prepared by Reichsleiter Martin Bormann for the cremation of the bodies of Hitler and his wife, were standing on the last landing leading from the bomb shelter into the garden of the Reich Chancellery. 'All the contents of the canisters were poured over the bodies of Hitler and his wife. Bormann pointed out the canisters to us and went down himself to get his own. 'This was around 4 p.m., and it was still light. A total of 60 litres of petrol was poured. 10 A Russian archivist reads Linge's account of Hitler's suicide Credit: East2West 10 Hitler's teeth were also examined Credit: East2West 10 The last known photograph of Hitler, taken shortly before his death in April 1945 Credit: East2West 'Before spreading the blanket on the floor, I placed Hitler's pistols (calibres 7.65 and 6.35) on the writing desk. Who took them from there, I do not know. 'Possibly it was Reichsleiter Martin Bormann, or the soldiers who carried out Eva Braun's body, or Hitler's valet Helm Krüger, or the orderly Willy Stiewitz. 'When saying goodbye to Hitler on 30 April 1945, I asked: 'Führer, whom should we try to break through to in the West?' 'And I received the answer: 'For the sake of the one who is still to come'.' Linge answered a Soviet leadership after they stormed Berlin - whether it was a double who had died in the bunker, and the real Hitler had escaped. A note translated into Russian says: 'A double of Hitler could not have committed suicide because: 1) Hitler did not have a double. 2) It was impossible to leave the premises without being seen, as there was only one exit from the room. 30.12.45. Linge Heinz.' Over many months, Linge slightly altered his version of events, telling the Russians: 'I must admit that my earlier testimony was incorrect. 'I did not hear any gunshot sounds but only noticed the smell of gunpowder and, based on that, informed Bormann that the suicide had occurred. 'I previously stated incorrectly that Eva Braun's body was wrapped in a blanket. I now recall that it was not.' The historic documents have been locked in a vault by the FSB, successor to the KGB, in the Ivanovo region. 10 SS-Sturmbannführer Heinz Linge was Hitler's valet Credit: East2West 10 The docs also included statements from SS-Untersturmführer Otto Günsche, Hitler's personal assistant Credit: East2West After the war, Günsche was flown to Moscow with other Hitler associates. Intriguing new details, including how the Soviets pressured Günsche into opening up about Hitler's death. The documents show that a German POW and war criminal Colonel Remlinger was put in a cell with him and instructed by the Soviet authorities to convince him to cooperate. It was a cunning way of using Hitler's suicide to turn the Nazi's fanatical loyalty into cooperation by reinterpreting his 'oath'. Remlinger wrote a report that 'we convinced him that the events in Germany—especially Hitler's suicide—freed him from his oath to the Führer. 'Now, with the complete collapse of Germany and the Nazi system, there was no longer any reason to hide the events that unfolded in the Führer's headquarters from the Russians—it was now only of historical interest. 'It became easier to persuade him when it emerged that some of Hitler's close associates (Göring, Himmler) had abandoned him and turned to the Western powers.' More documents reveal the examination of Hitler's teeth to verify hit corpse. The FSB account reads: 'On 5 May 1945, in the garden of the Reich Chancellery, SMERSH officers from the 79th Rifle Corps of the 3rd Shock Army, 1st Belorussian Front, discovered the heavily charred corpses of a man and a woman in a bomb crater." 'The bodies lay about 3 metres from the entrance to the bunker and were covered with soil. 'By 8 May 1945, a forensic report on the man's corpse—presumably Hitler—was completed.' 10 Picture from inside Hitler's bunker Credit: East2West 10 A written statement from Heinz Linge Credit: FSB Russia/e2w This showed 'the presence in the mouth cavity of crushed glass ampoule fragments [...] a distinct bitter almond smell […] and results from chemical testing of internal organs showing cyanide compounds'. This allowed the commission 'to conclude that death resulted from cyanide poisoning'. 'On 10 May 1945, Kӓthe Heusermann, assistant to Hitler's personal dentist Professor Hugo Blaschke, was questioned in the Reich Chancellery's dental office. 'On 11 May, dental technician Fritz Echtmann, who had made Hitler's dentures, gave testimony. 'Both witnesses gave detailed descriptions of Hitler's dental work from memory. 'The unique features of the bridges, crowns, and fillings matched exactly with the dental records and X-rays in the possession of SMERSH investigators. 'Each was shown the jaw fragments recovered from the male skull separately, and both unhesitatingly confirmed they belonged to Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler.'
