Goodison derby goal a 'tremendous feeling'

Yahoo11-02-2025

Former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton has recalled his winning goal in the 1988 FA Cup fifth round against Everton as the Merseyside rivals prepare for the final Goodison Park derby on Wednesday.
"Goodison is an iconic old stadium. I will be sad when it goes," Houghton told Goodison's Greatest Derbies, a special edition of BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.
"Too many of the old stadiums we're not seeing any more and we're losing a little bit of the history and the atmosphere.
"It is such a tight, compact ground you can virtually feel the fans on top of you when you run down the wings. If you were an away player going to Goodison, the home crowd would tell you if you were doing good, bad or indifferent.
"It was a unique place to go. It is a great place to win or to go there on your debut like I did.
"It wasn't a particularly good game. I don't think either side did themselves justice. I was fortunate enough to score the only goal with what I would call a classic header.
"It was a tremendous feeling and to come off after the game with the victory and to have the bragging rights for the next couple of weeks was brilliant."

Chelsea confirm £30m signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich on six-year deal

Chelsea have strengthened their attack by completing the £30m signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich. The Stamford Bridge club were determined to bring in a new striker this summer and have moved swiftly to secure one of their top targets. Delap, who has signed a six-year deal, chose to join Chelsea after receiving pitches from Everton, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United. The 22-year-old scored 12 goals for Ipswich last season and was available at an affordable price following their relegation from the Premier League. Chelsea met the release clause in his contract last week. The forward, who joined City from Ipswich last summer, has been asked to miss the Under-21 European Championship in order to represent his new team at the Club World Cup. 'I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach,' Delap told Chelsea's website. 'It's going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies.' It remains to be seen if Delap is the last forward to join Chelsea this summer. They are also interested in the Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike. The arrival of another forward would raise questions over Nicolas Jackson's future.

Is Matt Turner the USMNT's No. 1 GK?: 'That's a fully loaded question for me'

Matt Turner doesn't necessarily see himself as the No. 1 goalkeeper for the U.S. men's national team and goes into every training camp with the mindset that he has to fight for his job just like anyone else. So with the Gold Cup beginning on June 14 and the World Cup almost exactly one year away, how does he see the pecking order of USMNT goalkeepers shaking out and what does that mean for him? "That's a fully loaded question for me," Turner told reporters Wednesday. "I don't see myself as the 'No. 1 No. 1' all the time. I think that's my mindset going into every camp right now is that every inch, every opportunity needs to be fought for and every opportunity that I've had under this current staff I've earned by my performances within training and the opportunities that I've had this past season with Crystal Palace. "I never think to myself, 'Oh, I'm going to come in and I'm going to play, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do that.' And I think anybody could attest to the work that I've put in to earn each opportunity that I get. I mean listen, there's lots of good goalkeepers in the pool right now. I think a lot of guys are performing well, especially some of the guys here in MLS, so it's nice to be around them, to train with them, and just keep pushing myself and pushing them to get better and hold the standards true to what we want to build on this national team." Turner, 30, was the Americans' starting goalkeeper at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and has been the top choice for the squad since, which included two disappointing performances at the Conacacaf Nations League Finals in March. The U.S. was first stunned by Panama, 1-0, and then by Canada, 2-1. Turner has not played much for club side Crystal Palace, which won the FA Cup last month. His last competitive match for the team was a 3-1 FA Cup win over Millwall on March 1; he didn't play in a league match this season. USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino recently commented on Turner's lack of minutes as a backup, acknowledging that he needs to "find the way to compete every week" before the 2026 World Cup. If not, another goalkeeper could overtake him as the Americans' new No. 1. "It's open in our mind," Pochettino told reporters last month regarding the starting goalkeeper position. "It's open for another player maybe to challenge in between and maybe to try to give the possibility to play another player." Turner has an entire summer to prove himself. Pochettino initially called up Turner, along with Zack Steffen, Matt Freese and Patrick Schulte as part of a 27-player roster for two upcoming friendlies against Turkey (June 7) and Switzerland (June 10). Chris Brady recently replaced Schulte, who left camp with an oblique injury, and the Colorado Rapids announced Wednesday that Steffen suffered a knee injury and has returned to his club for further examination. The USMNT opens Gold Cup group stage competition against Trinidad and Tobago on June 15, followed by Saudi Arabia on June 19 and Haiti on June 22. Turner reflected on the Gold Cup in 2021, when the U.S. beat Mexico in the final to win the tournament. He believes those performances solidified his place on the roster ahead of the 2022 World Cup. "I'm pretty sure that Gold Cup is essentially what launched me to get my move to Arsenal and now fighting my way through Europe and trying to make it work over there right now," Turner said. "Since then, I've been through a lot. I've had two kids, I've moved to three different teams, so I've had a lot of change." Back then, Turner was playing for the New England Revolution and was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021 before moving to Premier League side Arsenal. Since then, his club play has been inconsistent, with just 31 total appearances for the Gunners, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace. If he's to get more reps between now and next summer, could Turner potentially return to MLS? He's previously stated that his preference would be to stay in Europe. "I think I'd always be open to coming back home," Turner said. "But I've had a lot of positive talks with a lot of different clubs and think the important thing for me is finding the right situation for me to play in and to maximize what I feel is my potential as well. "It's not as cut and dry anymore in player movement in general. If you look around the European soccer world — especially with a lot of new financial rules and regulations in place — clubs have to do business and get creative with the way they do business in certain situations. So it's not always just, 'I point my finger to this club, this is a good situation, I want to go here, let's make that happen.' [There are] other factors at play. You have to weigh the family side, you have to weigh the personal side, and obviously the playing side and what works from club to club as well." Turner said Wednesday he hopes he'll have news regarding his future this summer. But no matter what happens on that front, he has an opportunity to influence Pochettino's decision-making with quality performances at the Gold Cup. Exclusive: Lewis Steele Reveals Whether Liverpool are Selling Luis Diaz or Not

Liverpool's Position on Luis Diaz Future Clarified Amid Transfer Speculation Insight from Media Matters on Anfield Index In a recent Media Matters episode for Anfield Index, host Dave Davis was joined by Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail to offer a grounded, journalist-led insight into current Liverpool transfer news. Broadcasting live from the Allianz Arena, Steele provided updates on several players, including a pointed discussion about Luis Diaz, whose name continues to circulate in the transfer columns across Europe. Advertisement Addressing mounting speculation about Diaz's future, particularly in relation to Barcelona and interest from Saudi Arabia, Davis observed, 'It seems quite clear though Liverpool are not going to offer him a new deal.' Steele agreed and went further in assessing the situation from both the club and player perspectives. No New Contract Expected 'Talk of his new contract is a bit premature,' said Steele, highlighting that while Diaz's representatives may be interested in a renegotiation, there is little movement from Liverpool's end: 'He definitely wants a new contract in his camp, but I don't think Liverpool are going to offer him anytime soon or talks aren't going to open anytime soon.' Advertisement This standstill has prompted external whispers and media suggestions of a possible move. However, Steele was quick to temper those notions. 'I think the state of play is that Liverpool don't want to sell him,' he stated plainly. 'He's always linked away, isn't he? That's been the case since last summer with those links as well.' Assessment of Diaz's Season In discussing Diaz's 2024/25 performance, Steele added a measured view of the Colombian's contribution: 'I think he's had a decent season this season. Obviously, there's still room for improvement, but decent.' The implication was clear – not outstanding, but consistent and valuable. Photo: IMAGO Crucially, Steele touched on the financial aspect, dismissing the likelihood of a high-profile switch: 'I can't see Barca paying enough money to get him, and Al-Nassr… I don't think that he'd want to go there.' From both sporting and economic angles, a move does not appear to be on the cards. Liverpool's Transfer Window Focus Although Diaz has been a talking point, Liverpool's current transfer focus is directed elsewhere. 'Liverpool don't start training again till the second week of July,' said Steele. Timing, not urgency, seems to define their window. 'They're certainly not going to rush a deal and do a deal for five million more just to get it done.' As speculation inevitably grows during the off-season, the takeaway from this discussion was cautious optimism around Luis Diaz's continued presence at Anfield. Steele concluded, 'I'll be surprised. I think I wrote in the Q&A I'm leaning towards Diaz staying at Liverpool now… that's probably got even more strong as the days have gone on.'
