Valkyries make WNBA debut with sky-high expectations

Reuters15-05-2025

NEW YORK, May 15 (Reuters) - Excitement for the WNBA's first expansion franchise in 17 years hits a fever pitch on Friday, as the Golden State Valkyries kick off their first season after blockbuster demand from fans.
The WNBA awarded the new franchise, its first since 2008, to the San Francisco Bay Area in October 2023, answering longstanding calls from players and fans to expand the top-flight American league.
That gave the team the extraordinary task to build itself from scratch - from branding and marketing to business operations and on-court talent - in only a year and a half.
Their first hire, president Jess Smith, was equal to the Herculean challenge: A day-one member of the Angel City FC front office, she helped build the 2020 NWSL expansion club into the world's most valuable women's professional team in a few years.
"Our aspirations are to lead commercially, whether that's ticketing, partnership, merchandise, et cetera," Smith told Reuters. "We're pretty confident that we will come out of the gate as the leader in the WNBA and beyond."
Their lone pre-season home game saw a whopping 17,428 in attendance, the third highest-attended pre-season game in league history.
The team kicks off the inaugural season with more than 10,000 full season ticket holders, playing out of the same arena where their NBA counterparts, the seven-time champions Golden State Warriors, compete.
While they share a common court, the Valkyries have carved out their own identity and fanbase in the title-rich Bay Area, as only 5% of those 10,000-plus season ticket holders have season tickets with the Warriors, too.
"We built a totally unique audience coming to the same venue for the same sport to showcase that it is a unique audience that is asking for this product," said Smith.
"You cannot discount women sports fans. Women sports fans have been underserved for so long and understudied and undervalued forever."
With the league riding an upswing of attendance and television viewership, the expectations are high.
The WNBA is adding two more clubs in Portland and Toronto in 2026, while business leaders in Nashville, Cleveland and Detroit have expressed interest in adding teams.
"They've laid a really ambitious blueprint for these other franchises to try and follow," ESPN analyst Ryan Ruocco told reporters on Wednesday.
"I feel very confident, regardless of what struggles they have on the floor in year one, that they're going to look like a really attractive franchise and that their in-arena experience, their in game experience is going to be one that attracts players."
While on-court challenges could be expected for any newcomer, general manager Ohemaa Nyanin has set an ambitious course with a roster that embraces the international growth of the sport.
Wednesday's final roster included seven international players, as well as domestic talent, like 2024 Sixth Woman of the Year Tiffany Hayes.
"We're competitive, we're hungry. We're not satisfied with just one win," said Nyanin, who saw the New York Liberty reach the playoffs three times in five years in various roles across the organization before joining Golden State.
"We want more - we're going to go out and take it."
The Valkyries tip off on Friday at home against the Los Angeles Sparks.

Only the best should showcase cricket in Olympics return at LA 2028

June 11 (Reuters) - Cricket will return to the Olympics after 128 years at the 2028 Games and the popular view is only the best teams should showcase the game in Los Angeles, even if it means leaving out hosts the United States. Both the men's and women's competitions will be a six-team contest in the 20-overs format when cricket is played in the Olympics for the first time since 1900. The International Cricket Council is yet to announce the qualification format but is likely to pick the top six teams in the official rankings at a cut-off date. The U.S. rank 17th in the men's list and 24th in the women's, which make their position untenable in the cricket competitions of their home Olympics. "I'd love an associate member to get in there but let's be realistic," Sumod Damodar, who represents associate members like the U.S. in the ICC Chief Executives' Committee, told Reuters. "Should the U.S. get an automatic place? I'll say let's put the best that we can on show. "We're coming back into the Olympics after 128 years. We need to make that impressions so that people will say, 'Okay, we don't want them to go back and beg 'please include us' before every Olympics'. "Like track and field, we need to become a regular Olympic fixture. We need to show them that this product is worth it." With Brisbane hosting the 2032 Olympics and India bidding for the 2036 Games, Botswana cricket chief Damodar hoped cricket will feature in the next three Olympics and beyond. "We need to send the best six teams to showcase our game from the perspective of what it has in store for us, for the public, and the spectators in the future Olympic Games," he said. Damodar added the ICC should announce a cut-off date sometime next year giving all members enough time to improve their rankings. USA Cricket did not reply to a Reuters email seeking its view but Sanjay Govil, who owns the Washington Freedom franchise in the Major League Cricket (MLC) in the U.S., also said only the best should represent cricket at Los Angeles. "It should be based on merit, because we also want to make sure that it's competitive, right?" Govil told Reuters. "I think we should have the six best teams because otherwise it would be unfair to leave out a team to accommodate USA."

Nvidia, Perplexity partner with European firms to boost local AI models

SAN FRANCISCO, June 11 (Reuters) - Nvidia and artificial intelligence search firm Perplexity on Wednesday said they are partnering with more than a dozen AI firms in Europe and the Middle East to refine those firms' AI technologies and distribute them to local businesses. Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab said it will work with model makers in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Sweden to help make AI models in local languages become what are called reasoning models, which are capable of carrying out more complicated tasks. AI technologies built in English and Chinese have started to shift to that technology, but that transition is more difficult in languages where less training data is available. Kari Briski, vice president of generative AI software for enterprise at Nvidia, said the company will help model makers generate new data - known as synthetic data - in local languages to help improve them. "We're doing a lot of synthetic data generation to bring to these low-resource languages and translating our reasoning data so that they can train on it," Briski said in an interview Tuesday. "Europe needs strong models that reflect each nation's unique language and culture." Once those local models are trained, Perplexity will help distribute them in Europe, where businesses can run them in local data centers and use them to carry out business tasks such as researching a new topic. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said Germany is already Perplexity's second largest market by revenue. "That's the kind of system we are heading to in the future, where models are basically doing a few hours' worth of work in one single prompt," Srinivas said. The deal was part of a number of announcements Nvidia made at an AI conference in Paris on Wednesday. Nvidia and Perplexity did not disclose any financial terms of the deal.
