Silver Alert issued for 73-year-old Austin man
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas Department of Public Safety issued a Silver Alert for John Mendel, 73, who was last seen around 11 a.m. on Sunday.
DPS said the Austin Police Department is searching for Mendel, who is diagnosed with a cognitive impairment.
Mendel is a white male with hazel eyes and white hair. He is 6-foot-1 and weighs 150 pounds, according to the alert.
Mendel was last seen in the 4000 block of Gemstone Road and may be traveling in an orange 2010 Dodge Caliber with the Texas license plate CZ1W250. He was also last seen wearing a dark blue dri-fit shirt, jeans and Crocs brand shoes.
Austin Police believe that Mendel's disappearance poses a credible threat to his health and safety. Anyone with information regarding this missing person should contact APD at 512-974-5000.

St. Paul police name detective, officer, employee of the year
St. Paul's police chief on Thursday named a homicide investigator as Detective of the Year and a patrol officer who regularly recovers firearms and large amounts of drugs as Officer of the Year. Sgt. Jennifer O'Donnell, a St. Paul officer of more than 30 years who works in the homicide/robbery unit, was the primary investigator on 156 homicides, robberies and aggravated assaults last year and assisted on more, according to her commendation. She was the primary investigator in the fatal shooting of Nicholas Sletten, 42, in the North End in October. Murder charges were filed in January. 'This was a complex investigation that required ongoing intensive work,' said O'Donnell's commendation, which described her and her colleagues as working 'tirelessly' on the case. He grew up in St. Paul, became a Police Explorer at age 14, and later a St. Paul parking enforcement officer before he joined the department's police academy in 2021. A patrol officer in the Western District, Dahir recovered 22 handguns, of which 3 were stolen and one a 'ghost gun,' and several thousand fentanyl pills during 18 stops last year that were either traffic or investigative, his commendation said, adding that last year 'was not an anomaly.' Dahir recovered 30 handguns the year before. Richard Bertholf, who works in the police Video Management Unit, was recognized as Professional Employee of the Year. When Andre L. Mitchell, 26, was shot and killed while two children were in his backseat in November, Bertholf 'immediately responded to multiple urgent requests to gather nearby video that may have captured the shooting,' his commendation said. He found videos that showed four people shooting at Mitchell and two suspect vehicles, and gathered information about suspects. Four people have been charged in Mitchell's murder. A/C unit stolen from Austin nonprofit as temps rise
AUSTIN (KXAN) — An organization that helps people deal with the loss of loved ones is now dealing with loss as well. In early May, thieves stole an A/C unit from outside The Christi Center on Hancock Drive in central Austin. 'It is a little warm as you can see, the heat is intense,' said Cathy Collins, Crime Victim Advocate with The Christi Center. Collins said she believes someone pulled up behind their largest building, which backs up to an empty lot, then cut and pulled the units off the wall. 'What you are looking at was the location of our two units,' said Collins as she pointed out the empty blocks where the units used to be. She said one unit was damaged too much as the thieves were trying to take it, so it was left behind. But the other was stolen. Heat building before wet pattern next week Since the theft took place, The Christi Center has not been using their largest facility, where they hold large meetings for people dealing with grief. When KXAN stopped by it was 84 degrees inside the room. They posted that the lack of A/C has disrupted critical programming for grieving children and adults at a time when demand for services is at an all time high. Collins said before they get the new A/C units installed they are adding fencing around the back of the property and raising money for more security features. 'So we have the fence and a good portion of it is already built,' Collins said. She said they filed a police report, but have not heard back about any suspects at this time. People injured after ‘juveniles' threw frozen water bottles at moving vehicles, per Leander Police
LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) – The Leander Police Department said it needed help identifying 'juveniles' who threw frozen water bottles at moving vehicles, leading to injuries. On the nights of May 29 and May 30, Leander Police said several 'juveniles' reportedly threw frozen water bottles from a white 2014 Dodge Durango near San Gabriel Parkway and CR 270 and from the truck beds of a two pickup trucks, one white and the other a dark color, along North Bagdad Road. 'This incident caused damage to numerous windshields, headlights, and mirrors,' LPD said in a Facebook post. 'Two victims suffered injuries to their faces because of the incident,' the post continued. The police department said it heard of similar reports in Georgetown and 'other parts of Williamson County.'
