Kitchee sack boss Cardoso, with head coach learning of fate before Lee Man thumping
Head coach Edgar Cardoso has been told his time at Kitchee is coming to an end after he delivered the club's first season without a trophy in more than a decade.

The Portuguese, who will stay in charge until his contract expires this summer, learned his fate in a meeting with club president Ken Ng Kin after a 2-1 home loss to North District last week.
He revealed the news moments after a dire 4-0 defeat at Lee Man on Saturday, as the club's supporters noisily called for his removal.
'I'm out of Kitchee at the end of the season,' Cardoso said. 'It's mainly the club's decision. I had very good intentions to play good football, to entertain the fans, but the fans are not entertained.
'My contract is coming to an end, so it was an easy decision for the club to not renew.'

Cardoso, whose last game in charge will be against Eastern on May 25, was installed last summer following the exit of predecessor Kim Dong-jin, who lasted only eight months after he replaced 2022-23 treble winning boss Alex Chu Chi-kwong.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez echoed Silva's statements, saying his "hunger" and desire to improve made him a unique figure in the sport. "It's difficult to put into words. He takes each day as an opportunity to get better," Martinez said. "As a human, when you have success, you wake up and you have less hunger. But not Cristiano." File photo: Reuters Bruno Fernandes confirmed he rejected a huge offer from Saudi Arabia to stay at Manchester United, saying he wanted to "continue to play at the highest level". Speaking to media in a Portugal camp ahead of Wednesday's Nations League semi-final against Germany in Munich, Fernandes confirmed he received an "exciting offer" from Al Hilal but wanted to be part of Ruben Amorim's rebuild at Old Trafford. Reports said Al Hilal were willing to pay United up to US$135 million for the 30-year-old Portugal international. "The president of Al Hilal called me and asked me if I wanted to move there," Fernandes confirmed, saying the club "waited for me to think about my future". "I talked to the gaffer and he asked me not to go," Fernandes revealed. "Man United said they didn't want to sell me. They said if I wanted to go I could but they didn't need the money." The 20-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Spanish side Las Palmas as they were relegated from La Liga, will be available to feature for the Blues at the Club World Cup later this month. Essugo came through Sporting's academy and became the youngest player to appear for the club's first team at the age of 16 in March 2021. Deals for both Essugo and Geovany Quenda were initially agreed in March. Quenda will remain at Sporting until the end of the 2025-2026 season, while Chelsea are set to further boost their squad in the coming days as they close in on a deal for Ipswich striker Liam Delap.
