
Going screen-free for a week urged by expert as they issue stark health warning
Experts say too much screen time may be reshaping children's brains affecting focus, mood, memory and social skills during key stages of development but complete elimination isn't the answer
In 2025, you'd be hard pressed to find a family that doesn't incorporate a screen into their family life.
Whether it's Miss Rachel whilst busy parents slog through their already packed and demanding days, or CBeebies Bedtime stories read by your favourite famous person. The digital world has become a normal part of modern-day parenting. Experts are alarmed about the time children are spending glued to screens.
The first week of May marks the annual Screen-Free Week, encouraging families to take a break from digital devices. Even small changes make a huge difference. Screen time is complicated because screens are used both to educate, entertain, and even soothe tantrums, but what happens when this becomes the norm and not the exception? According to child psychiatrists, the impact might go far deeper than a squabble over who gets the iPad next, the Independent reports.
Rewiring the default setting in our brains
Dr Samir Shah, consultant psychiatrist and medical director at Priory Hospital Altrincham, says screen time is doing more than filling quiet moments; to put it drastically, he says it could actually be reshaping the way children's brains grow and function.
"Research has shown regular screen time and excessive screen time can change both the physical structure of the brain such as areas responsible for memory and planning, and how different parts of the brain communicate with each other," he explains.
The constant stimulation of being online has the potential to rewire the routes brains use to think, learn and connect. Dr Shah likens this shift in "brain network connectivity" to closing a road and sending traffic on a detour. Eventually, that new route becomes the default, but it's not always the most efficient or healthy.
He warns that heavy screen use has been linked to real cognitive struggles in children, including problems with attention, problem-solving and multitasking. Adding: 'It is similar to only exercising one muscle group, and other important mental muscles like focus, delayed gratification and self-control can weaken if they are not used enough.'
The impact of constant stimulation on the brain's reward system
Dopamine is a chemical in the brain that is released into our system when we do something enjoyable. The chemical is known as the brain's 'feel-good chemical.'
'Regular screen use triggers the release of dopamine, which is the brain's 'feel-good' chemical. This then creates a cycle of craving more screen time to get that same buzz or effect. It is a bit like checking the door repeatedly and hoping for an exciting visitor.'
And once that cycle starts, it can make real-world experiences feel a bit, well, underwhelming. 'Over time, real-world and realistic activities can start to feel less rewarding by comparison. This is why children and teenagers who use screens regularly struggle to maintain or build meaningful social connections.'
The impact on mental health
There is also a mental health side to all of this. According to Dr Shah, research shows that children and teenagers who spend over four hours a day on screens are more likely to report heightened anxiety and low mood. The relentless digital stimulation may leave young people with high dopamine levels but an emotional void, leading to feelings of restlessness and dissatisfaction.
He explains: 'Less face-to-face and direct interaction means fewer opportunities and chances to practise important social and executive skills like empathy and resolving conflicts.'
Are children's brains more vulnerable?
Dr Shah described children's brains as 'sponges,' ready to soak in everything at an incredible rate. Critical periods before age five and again in the preteen years are when the brain is most plastic and most shaped by repeated behaviours. Too much screen exposure during these windows could lead to longer-term consequences.
You don't just have to take Dr Shah's word for this; MRI scans of children with high screen time have shown notable changes in the brain. These include thinner regions involved in decision-making, reduced grey matter in areas linked to language, and disrupted connectivity in the zones that manage focus and attention.
Dr Shah has reiterated that whilst this doesn't constitute 'damage,' it is indicative of heavy screen use leading to brains adapting in different ways, he says specifically, 'It can be seen as altered adaptations and disruption.'
There is a middle ground
According to Dr Shah, balance is the way forward. Eliminating screen time altogether is not the way forward. That could mean setting daily limits, prioritising screen-free meals, or making time for digital detoxes in the evening. It's also worth noting that how screens are used is important—scrolling aimlessly on social media isn't the same as a video call with a loved one.

Staying within the right weight range is said to lower your risk for serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes - and the way to do it is typically focused on diet, exercise and lifestyle. Prioritising getting enough sleep and avoiding stress, consuming nutrient-rich foods and engaging in physical activity are thought to be the key to maintaining a healthy BMI. But a new study has found another factor that could come into play - and there's nothing you can do about it. Research published in the journal Nature Metabolism explored the link between weather conditions and a person's physiology over the course of their life and an intriguing result emerged. People conceived during colder months, researchers found, could end up with a lower BMI and less fat around their internal organs, the Independent reported. The study from Japan 's Tohoku University looked at 683 healthy men and women aged between three and 78 and found those conceived during a cold season ended up with 'higher brown adipose tissue density'. Brown fat tissue generates heat to help the body maintain its core temperature, including in newborns and cold environments. Higher density of the tissue has been linked to a lower internal fat accumulation into adulthood, meaning people conceived during a cold season could end up with a lower BMI. By contrast to brown adipose tissue, white adipose tissue is the most abundant type of fat in the body. Research found when it gets colder, less of this is stored than under hotter conditions. "We report that individuals whose mothers conceived during cold seasons exhibit higher brown adipose tissue activity, adaptive thermogenesis, increased daily total energy expenditure and lower body mass index and visceral fat accumulation," said researchers in the study. "Lower outdoor temperatures and greater fluctuations in daily temperatures during the fertilisation period are key determinants of brown adipose tissue activity." they added. Obesity is a key risk factor for death, with more than a billion people around the globe thought to be living with very high levels of body fat. You're considered to be obese if you're 20 per cent over your healthy weight range. Key advice to lower your BMI includes: 1. Do at least five half-hour sessions of moderate activity every week, such as brisk walking. 2. Eat five portions of fruit and veg a day. Besides being low in fat, they contain antioxidants, which help prevent serious illness. 3. Drink no more than two to three units of alcohol per day for women (and a weekly limit of 14). A unit equals half a pint of beer, a small glass of wine or a single measure of spirits. 4. Limit takeaways to once or twice per month. They are full of saturated fat, which raises the risk of high blood pressure and cholesterol - both of which are major risks for heart disease.

Joe Biden's White House press secretary has quit the Democratic Party and written a tell-all memoir about the party's 'betrayal' of the former president. Karine Jean-Pierre, 50, who fiercely defended Mr Biden when reporters asked about his ailing health, has penned a book about her journey to becoming an 'independent' after serving in both Barack Obama and Mr Biden's administrations. Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines, which will be released on Oct 21, is described as a 'groundbreaking, revelatory assessment of America's broken two-party system'. According to Legacy Lit, a Hachette Book Group imprint that will publish the book, 'insider' Ms Jean-Pierre will urge Americans to 'embrace life as independents' in a 'country obsessed with blind loyalty'. 'Jean-Pierre didn't come to her decision to be an independent lightly,' it adds. 'She has served two American presidents, Obama and Biden. In 2020, she joined Biden's campaign as a senior adviser, becoming Harris's chief of staff and then, two years later, White House press secretary. She takes us through the three weeks that led to Biden abandoning his bid for a second term and the betrayal by the Democratic Party that led to his decision.' The book is described as a 'hard-hitting yet hopeful critique' in which she encourages Americans to 'think outside of the blue-and-red box'. Jake Tapper, the CNN journalist, has been accused of cashing-in with a book about Mr Biden's decline in office while failing to report on it while he was still in office. Tapper was accused of being a hypocrite following the release of Original Sin, which alleged aides shielded the public from the extent of Mr Biden's decline while serving as president. According to the authors, the president at one stage forgot the name of actor George Clooney and was closely managed by his wife, Jill Biden, who allegedly protected the president from criticism and finished his thoughts for him. Mr Biden, 82, said the allegations were 'wrong' and 'there's nothing to sustain' them. Last month, he revealed he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Ms Jean-Pierre, who was in Mr Biden's inner circle, was criticised at times for being evasive about Mr Biden's physical condition. Her book appears to represent a continuation of her defence of Mr Biden. Earlier this year Ms Jean-Pierre accused the Democratic leadership of attacking Mr Biden like a 'firing squad'. 'Until January 20, I was responsible for speaking on behalf of the president of the United States,' Ms Jean-Pierre, the first black woman and openly gay person to hold the position of White House press secretary, said in a statement released on Wednesday. 'At noon on that day, I became a private citizen who, like all Americans and many of our allies around the world, had to contend with what was to come next for our country. I determined that the danger we face as a country requires freeing ourselves of boxes. We need to be willing to exercise the ability to think creatively and plan strategically.' Ms Jean-Pierre succeeded Jen Psaki as press secretary in 2022 after previously serving as deputy press secretary and also working as a senior adviser during Mr Biden's 2020 campaign. During Mr Obama's first term, she was a regional political director.

Katherine Ryan breaks silence on fourth pregnancy and says it's 'irresponsible'
Comedian Katherine Ryan has announced she's expecting another child, but says while she's always wanted more kids, it feels 'irresponsible' to her others Katherine Ryan admits her fourth pregnancy may be "irresponsible". The comedian, 41, announced that she and her partner Bobby Koostra are expanding their family – they are parents to a son, born in 2021, a daughter, born in 2022, and Katherine has a daughter, Violet, from a previous relationship. But while she has always wanted more children, she admits that expecting her fourth may be a touch irresponsible. "Here's what I think: I do love making people. I love them, making them with you, it's always what I wanted since prom. I think at this point, we need to see where it goes, but I think it might be almost irresponsible to the children that we have, and to ourselves," she said to Bobby. Speaking on the most recent episode of their podcast, Katherine revealed she hoped she was having a boy. But if she has a boy, the child is all Bobby's she joked. "The boys are yours and the girls, I feel like, are mine," she said. Bobby added: "I think the best thing for the family would be a girl." Katherine revealed the news of her pregnancy to Bobby on their podcast, leaving him shocked. "I wouldn't have known from the last scans that we've had, but congratulations," he said. Bobby added: "Well you do not like being told what to do so when you're getting to an age where women are getting whatever way that goes…" Katherine let out an audible gasp, before Bobby went on to add: "Harder to have a baby and you're like, 'I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll have one' and so like after the miscarriage you were more keen than ever to get it done because of the biological age and the feeling that someone telling you you can't do something and you're like, 'I will do this' and I respect that about you. And so that's where we are, and I think we can say this might be the last one." But their parenting skills can be quite different. Violet has introduced their son Fred to an iPad, which Bobby is against. Speaking about the bombshell, Katherine explained: "It's had the affect that you would think it would have, Fred is completely transfixed by this techonology and there's a Spider Man game and he's like (gasps), like I hear Bobby and Fred, we all sleep in the same room now – why in a five bedroom house? "We're up in the attic, we're hiding from rogue government, and Fred's like, 'Dad, I need to play Spider-Man, Dad, where's my iPad?' He's having dreams about it!" Bobby joked that Fred will often wake up and say "Spider-Man game!" before falling back asleep. Earlier this year, Katherine opened up on her wishes for a fourth child as she admitted she didn't think time was on her side. The former Celebrity Gogglebox star visited a fertility clinic with husband Bobby and discussed the chances of them being able to conceive. In the second season of her hit U&W show, At Home With Katherine Ryan, she said: "It's not that surprising that over-40 women have fewer follicles than we once did. But we talk a lot about male fertility as well, which is on a steep decline. But I would still like a fourth baby. We are so blessed to have the kids that we do have. Having children is not for everyone, but I personally really like making people. I think it's a superpower, if you can do it."
