KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged librarians across the region to go beyond their traditional roles and take on the challenge of nurturing a vibrant reading culture, especially among the younger generation.
Speaking at the 19th Congress of South-East Asian Librarians General Conference and Meeting (Consal XIX), Anwar said libraries must not only serve as book repositories or aesthetic spaces, but rather as dynamic centres of knowledge, culture and intellectual engagement.
"A librarian's role is not only to collect books and arrange them in glass cabinets. It is to turn the library into a vital resource to raise awareness and inspire readers,' he said when opening the event at the World Trade Centre here on Tuesday (June 17).
The Prime Minister also stressed that librarians must be effective guides in introducing readers to exciting content, as well as utilising technology and digital tools to reach a wider audience.
Also present were National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, his deputy K. Saraswathy and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. – Bernama

MPMA Calls For Immediate Deferment Of SST Implementation
PETALING JAYA, June 17 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA) is calling on the Government to immediately defer the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST) and to initiate structured consultation with affected industries. The sudden rollout announced without adequate notice, clarity, or stakeholder engagement has already disrupted operations, particularly for exporters and companies with raw material shipments currently en route to Malaysia. MPMA expresses serious concern over the lack of transparency and consultation in this decision-making process. Consultation is not a formality, it is essential. Policies made without industry input often fail to reflect practical realities, leading to unintended consequences such as reduced competitiveness, lower investor confidence, and broader economic instability.

Anwar leads tributes for former MIC chief and ex-minister Palanivel who died today
KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today extended his condolences to the family of former MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, who died this morning at the age of 76. In a brief message on Facebook, Anwar said Palanivel left an indelible mark on the nation through his decades of public service. 'His contributions to championing the Indian community, rural development and environmental conservation are deeply valued. May his family find strength in this time of loss,' he wrote. Palanivel, who was also a former minister, died at Kuala Lumpur Hospital at 8am. He held several senior posts since entering politics in 1990, including serving as MP for Hulu Selangor and later Cameron Highlands. Separately, Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir described Palanivel's death as a significant loss to the nation, particularly to MIC and the coalition. 'He was a respected and principled leader who contributed greatly to national unity and the wellbeing of Malaysians from all backgrounds,' the Umno leader was quoted as saying by national news agency Bernama. Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan from PKR also paid tribute, calling Palanivel 'a respected voice for the Indian community' who had championed education, economic empowerment and unity. Palanivel led MIC from 2010 to 2015 and played a key role in strengthening the party's influence within BN. He also played a key role in expanding educational opportunities for ethnic Indians through Maju Institute of Educational Development, the educational arm of the MIC, and the founding of AIMST University.
