E-scooter trials expand across London, with 10 million kilometres clocked up
Electric scooters may be controversial for many drivers, but London travellers have clocked up more than 10 million kilometres on rented two-wheelers since the UK's biggest trial launched.
Wandsworth is the latest borough to join the trial, which means a third of the capital's boroughs are involved. Unlike the hordes of illegal e-scooters being used routinely on UK roads with no apparent sanction, the fleet of 4,000 e-scooters operating legally in the trial are limited to 12.5mph and have 'always on' lights in an effort to improve safety. According to Transport for London (TFL), just 0.0004 per cent of legal e-scooter journeys have resulted in serious injuries, but outside the trial the picture is more chilling.
According to official figures, there were six fatalities involving e-scooter collisions in 2024, and an estimated 1,194 casualties. The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) recently pointed to the fact that 49 e-scooter-related deaths have occurred since 2019, and has recommended that the Government should take action against retailers of illegal e-scooters, as well as promote more active police enforcement against those using them on the roads. PACTS also says the Department for Transport should improve the recording of e-scooter casualties, after the council's investigations showed fewer than 10 per cent of e-scooter-related injuries showing up at hospital casualty units are being recorded in official data.
TFL, meanwhile, paints a much more appealing picture of the officially regulated trials. It says new analysis shows the injury risk rate for the trial decreased year-on-year over the first three years of operation, while there have been no fatalities during the trial. It says operators also reported that more than 94 per cent of e-scooter trips complied with rules around parking.

Daimler limousine auctioned after Warwickshire barn find
An "extraordinarily rare" vintage car with potential royal connections has been discovered in a barn in to classic car auctioneers Humbert & Ellis, the 1952 Daimler DE 36 limousine was found in "good, dry order", but "deserved to be brought back to top-drawer condition".The firm said the vehicle was hand built by Daimler in 1951, with coachwork by Hooper & Co, based in auctioneers added their research suggested possibly only two were made, with the other having been built for King George VI. The car was delivered new to Birmingham City Council for use as a mayoral car and remained in civic use until 1961, Humbert & Ellis was then sold to the Birmingham Co-operative Society before being bought by a private build used a 1930s design, and was likely to have taken more than a year, the firm has a 5.4 litre, straight-eight petrol engine, and cost £6,137 when delivered. It has a glass partition, walnut interior and additional fold-down seats and plush Jonathan Humbert said it was a "highly rare and quintessentially British car".He added: "Having been hand built some 73 years ago, the car, although in good, dry order, is ripe for full recommissioning and deserves to be brought back to top-drawer condition as befits such a rare British beauty."He added it would be great if it could remain in auction closes to bids on Monday. Man rushed to hospital after 'car falls' from Luton Airport car park
A car is understood to have fallen from a multi-storey car park at Luton Airport, leaving a man with what are thought to be serious injuries. Bedfordshire Police said in a statement that emergency services were called shortly before 11am on Sunday. Officers said the incident involved a single vehicle at a multi-storey car park at London Luton Airport, and that police, ambulance and fire crews attended the scene. "One person has been taken to hospital with injuries which are thought to be serious," the force added, appealing for witnesses. Images from the airport show a damaged barrier on what appears to be the third level of a car park, and what appears to be a bumper on the ground. London Luton Airport said in response to queries on social media that the wider airport "remains open and fully operational".
