Family of woman found murdered in Las Vegas home speaks after arrest made in case
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The family of a woman found murdered in a home this week spoke with 8 News Now Friday about their efforts to remember her.
'She was always happy,' Mariana Rodriguez said. 'With a smile.'
Rodriguez is remembering a life stolen, sharing everything she will miss about her daughter, 26-year-old Marisela Rodriguez.
The mother of three was found dead inside a home near Rancho Drive and Oakey Boulevard Sunday.
Man arrested in Arizona after body found in Las Vegas home following party
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police told 8 News Now a person living there discovered Rodriguez in a bedroom after a house party the previous night. The Clark County Coroner reported her cause of death as a gunshot to the head.
Mariana Rodriguez described the moment she knew something had gone horribly wrong after she stopped hearing from her daughter and later arrived at the crime scene.
'I felt it and I was like, 'that's my daughter in that house,'' she recalled. 'The next day they called me and they were able to tell me that it was my daughter.'
23-year-old Steven Flores was arrested in connection with the case Thursday in Dolan Springs, outside of Kingman, Arizona.
According to court records, he faces one charge of open murder with a deadly weapon. His extradition to Las Vegas is pending.
'The emotion,' Mariana Rodriguez said. 'To know that they had somebody already in custody.'
Rodriguez said her family is doing its best to find closure, but they are now struggling to handle funeral costs.
'We didn't expect this,' she said. 'And it's hard.'
She added that those who loved Marisela most are relying on each other as they continue to mourn her life.
'You think that you're alone in this,' Rodriguez concluded. 'But you're not.'
Marisela's family is holding two fundraising events to help raise money for her funeral and burial expenses.
They are hosting a car wash and accepting donations on Saturday at 10 a.m. at 4884 E. Lake Mead Boulevard.
A second fundraising event will be held at the same location March 2. It will feature music and food starting at 10:00 a.m.
A GoFundMe account titled 'Help Alejandro lay his daughter to rest' was set up by her family.

Feds take action after CSN targeted in $7.4 million hack
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The federal government is cracking down to prevent fraud after 8 News Now reported the College of Southern Nevada was the victim of a multimillion-dollar hack. CSN lost $7.4 million in what's called a 'Ghost Student' scam. 'We were attacked, much like a lot of colleges across the nation have been attacked. Hence the feds taking action,' Dr. Juan Avalos, CSN's vice president of student affairs, said. In a press release issued on Friday, Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said rampant fraud is 'ripping off taxpayers' and taking financial aid away from students. As a result, she was implementing an extra layer of security to verify FAFSA applications. 'This is more about scammers than it is about people, and people not doing their jobs. I want to make that part clear,' Dr. Avalos said. From October to December 2023, the community college was getting a large number of federal financial aid applications, according to CSN. But on the first day of the spring semester in 2024, CSN noticed a problem — empty classrooms. 'It became a level of crisis during spring of 2024, when our instructors were reporting full rosters but no one was showing up,' Avalos said. The fraud scheme led to CSN paying back the U.S. Department of Education for loans the college awarded to fake students. Avalos said CSN was vulnerable since it's a large school and has fewer requirements for students to enroll. The Department of Education announced on Friday a new layer of security it was adding to FAFSA applications, requiring applicants to show in person or on a live video conference, an unexpired, valid, government-issued photo identification. Avalos applauded the move. 'By the time they hit the colleges, like College of Southern Nevada, we will have a greater sense of confidence that the FAFSAs we're getting belong to real students,' Avalos said. In a statement regarding the new verification, McMahon said, 'When rampant fraud is taking aid away from eligible students, disrupting the operations of colleges and ripping off taxpayers, we have a responsibility to act.' But what about the money CSN lost? Who is on the hook for that? 'So about half of it is stuff we're not going to get. The other is stuff that the college has to pay. But we're going to pay it from institutional funds. None of it is going to be kicked to the student,' Avalos said. He added that CSN will absorb about $4.3 million in losses. The college will be implementing more security upgrades this summer, including adding a third-party verification system on applications, which will vet future applicants' information. Baby hit by stray bullet during shootout in Spring Hill
SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — A baby is recovering at the hospital after a stray bullet from an early morning shootout in the street tore through a Spring Hill home and struck the sleeping child in the head. According to the Spring Hill Police Department, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 3000 block of Shandor Street in the Harvest Pointe subdivision shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday, June 6. PREVIOUS: Baby injured after shot fired into Spring Hill home Authorities said they believe a sedan stopped next to a person out on Shandor Street. The occupants of the vehicle reportedly shot at the young man, who fired back. Door bell camera footage shows grainy figures in and around a car. You can hear the loud gunshots before the vehicle accelerates out of frame. Several of the roughly 15 rounds fired in the shootout penetrated a nearby home. Police said one of the bullets went through a wall and grazed the skull of a 1-year-old girl who was sleeping inside the house. Body camera footage shows the intense response as a large number of officers flooded the neighborhood to collect evidence and search for those involved in the shooting. 'Hopefully they find out who did this and they seek justice,' a mother who lives in the neighborhood told News 2. The woman didn't know the family of the child who was injured, but like many residents, she was shaken by the outburst of violence that rocked the normally quiet community. 'I'm feeling for the family and our community, and I hope that we get through this and we find out who these people are. It's just horrible what's happened here today,' she said. News 2 spoke with the family's pastor from Southview Church, Josh Clendenen, who said the little girl suffered a skull fracture and some bleeding on the brain, but she is stable. ⏩ 'As a church community, we were shocked to hear of the events that took place last night in Spring Hill, and to learn one of the babies of our church family was injured, was devastating. We are rallying around the family with prayers and support, but also praying diligently for the protection of our community and its first responders,' Clendenen said. 'We're asking everyone to keep this family in your prayers and we encourage you to pray for your communities as well. We know God was protecting the entire family, and are believing for a complete healing and speedy recovery.' While the family didn't have a GoFundMe page by the time this article was published, the community has set up a meal train where people can donate both meals and money.
