Chennai's First AC Local Train: Boon For Some, Bane For Others

NDTV21-04-2025

Chennai:
Chennai's first air-conditioned (AC) suburban train, which rolled out on Saturday, has come as a boon for several commuters during peak hours as the city battles the sweltering heat due to rising temperatures.
The inauguration of the AC train linking Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu corridor was a key episode in the suburban rail network that is often hailed by many as the transport lifeline of the city and its neighbourhoods.
"It is a superb means to beat the summer heat. I used to drive earlier but now, I take the train and am able to comfortably work on my laptop. I think it is a very good initiative by the Railways," Madan, an IT professional, said.
Built by the Integral Coach Factory in the city, the train is equipped with more features than the regular EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) rakes, such as automatic doors and passenger information system. Its space-saving design has the propulsion system tucked under the train, so passengers can walk freely from one end to the other.
Some passengers, however, complained of the absence of any mobile or laptop charging provisions and about the metallic seats.
"I wish they had USB and charging provisions so we could charge and work on the go. Besides, the metallic seats get cold and could be a problem for ortho patients like me. Cushioned seats would be nice," Periayyah, a techie, said.
Commuters also flagged the expensive fares, which starts at Rs 35 and can extend up to Rs 105. "Taking this train is more expensive than taking the metro. The railways should bring down the fares. The limited stops too don't provide any help to students like me," Manobala, a college-goer, said.
The train makes only three trips a day. Amudha, a government employee working at Fort St George, said: "The timing ought to be changed to suit the opening and closing of government offices, so more of us could switch to this mode of transport."

Three cheated of Rs 81L by Surat firm promising Canada jobs

Ahmedabad: Three youths from Unava village in Gandhinagar were allegedly cheated of Rs 81 lakh by agents of a Surat-based firm with the promise of Canada work permits. The accused provided fake job letters and collected money in instalments from the victims between Dec 2024 and May 2025. According to a complaint filed with Pethapur police of Gandhinagar, the three friends approached a Surat-based immigration firm in Dec 2024. They met two agents, who claimed to represent the firm, and a woman who introduced herself as the owner. The youths were promised jobs in Manitoba, Canada, offering wages of 26.75 Canadian dollars per hour and other benefits. The victims, who submitted their passports and documents, received fake job letters and were asked to undergo police verification and medical tests. The accused later collected Rs 81 lakh from the three through bank transfers and cash. To gain trust, the agents issued post-dated cheques as security, stated the FIR. In May, when the victims visited the immigration office in Surat to collect their documents, the office was closed and all agents were unreachable. Realising they were cheated, one of the three victims filed a complaint with the Pethapur police on June 2. Pethapur police registered a case of breach of trust, cheating, and abetment under the BNS and began an investigation.

Bihar slashes VAT on aviation turbine fuel to 4%

Patna: State cabinet on Tuesday approved the proposal for reduction of value-added tax (VAT) on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) from 29% to 4%. The cabinet meeting, chaired by CM Nitish Kumar, approved the proposal of the commercial taxes department to reduce VAT on ATF with an aim to attract more commercial flights in the state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Earlier, 4% VAT on ATF was applicable at Gaya airport only. But now, the reduced rate will be applicable at all airports in the state," deputy CM-cum-finance minister Samrat Choudhary said, soon after the cabinet decision. In a statement Choudhary also said, "This decision will place Bihar among the leading states that have already reduced VAT on ATF to successfully expand air traffic. He said that the 29% tax rate on ATF in Bihar was higher compared to states like Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, etc. As a result, airlines preferred to purchase ATF in states where the VAT rate is lower. According to the commercial tax department's data, the total VAT collection from ATF was Rs 62.28 crore in the fiscal year 2023-24, constituting only 0.16% of the department's total revenue. In the year 2024-25, it was Rs 71.67 crore, which is approximately 0.17% of the department's total revenue. The deputy CM further said that this decision would elevate Bihar to new heights in terms of investment and tourism. "The expansion of air services will not only enhance travel experiences for the state's residents but also stimulate industrial activities, providing employment opportunities in various sectors of tourism and industry," he added.
