'Positive after positive' for Northern Ireland's Devenny
Crystal Palace's Justin Devenny said he relished the challenge of playing a new position for Northern Ireland in their 2-1 friendly defeat by Denmark on Saturday. The game in Copenhagen saw manager Michael O'Neill pick the 21-year-old to start at wing-back for the first time at international level.Devenny, who won the FA Cup with Oliver Glasner's side this season, performed admirably throughout, creating Northern Ireland's early goal while also managing the threat posed by Lazio's Gustav Isaksen."It was a new position for me but I enjoyed it and wherever I play for the team I'm willing to do a shift," he said of what was his fourth cap."Michael had told me he was thinking of playing me there and we did a few bits and bobs in training. To be fair, I'm familiar with it from Palace as well."I know the roles and responsibilities of it and it's just putting that into place."O'Neill has previously played the right-footed Brodie Spencer on the left side of his backline with the Huddersfield Town man performing well in recent internationals. The manager thought that Devenny's comfort on the ball gave his side a "nice outlet" at Parken Stadium. "I thought he did really well," O'Neill said."He's got his hands full against a winger that obviously causes you a lot of problems. Justin's a midfield player but he's left-sided and I thought he dealt with it very, very well. "He gave us a nice outlet on the left-hand side as well in terms of his use of the ball, so he was a big, big positive."
Along with Liverpool's Conor Bradley, Devenny was one of only two players in the Northern Ireland panel to feature in the Premier League this season. The highlight of his domestic season, however, was of course his side's Wembley victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final and the Scotland-born midfielder is already looking forward to playing European football at Selhurst Park next season."Now it has probably sunk in but at the time I was in shock," he said of being an unused substitute in the final."It was such a big achievement at such a young age. I'll probably look back on my career in times to come and think of that day. It was special and to do it with a special group of boys was great."It's positive after positive. That's what I want to do with my career, take the next step and then the next step after that. Hopefully there will be some opportunities to come for me."Before that, though, is Tuesday night's friendly with Iceland where Devenny hopes both to make a first home start for his country and for the side to build momentum before the start of their World Cup qualifying campaign in September."Hopefully I'll get a start. It's a special atmosphere and the fans are great, so I can't wait for that," he added."It is about getting that team togetherness and knowing the way we play. Even for me, this is my third camp and it's about understanding the players I'm playing with."It's a great learning experience and I think that builds momentum into the big games."

Soccer Lewandowski will not play for Poland under current coach after losing captaincy
June 9 (Reuters) - Robert Lewandowski said he will not play for Poland again under the current manager, shortly after the striker was stripped of the captaincy role on Sunday. Poland coach Michal Probierz made the decision to replace Lewandowski as national team captain with midfielder Piotr Zielinski. "By decision of coach Michal Probierz, Piotr Zielinski became the new captain of the Polish national team," a Polish football federation (PZPN) statement said. "The coach personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the training staff of his decision." Lewandowski's response via social media was swift. "Considering the circumstances and the loss of trust in the Polish national team coach, I have decided to step back from playing for the Polish national team as long as he remains the coach," Lewandowski said. "I hope I will have the chance to play again for the best fans in the world." Lewandowski is not with the current Poland squad, with the Barcelona player citing physical and mental exhaustion after a long season as the reason for his absence. The 36-year-old is Poland's highest goal scorer with 85 goals for his country in a record 158 appearances, and had held the captaincy since 2014. Probierz replaced the sacked Fernando Santos as Poland manager in 2023, taking them to Euro 2024 where his side were the first team to be eliminated. The PZPN said Probierz will respond to questions on the situation in a press conference on Monday. Poland defeated Moldova 2-0 in a friendly on Friday and are away to Finland in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

Always wanted to own an *actual* Le Mans hypercar? Get your order in for the new Aston Martin Valkyrie LM...
Aston Martin has launched the Valkyrie LM as a screaming V12-engined, Le Mans-spec track toy that could be the world's ultimate automotive plaything. Unlike the Valkyrie AMR Pro, a track-only version of the Valkyrie road car, the Valkyrie LM is based on Aston's LMH hypercar that will race at La Sarthe this weekend. That means it draws 697bhp from the same 6.5-litre Cosworth V12 and drives the rear wheels through a seven-speed semi-automatic sequential gearbox. But Aston Martin has made a number of modifications to tailor the Valkyrie LM to track day use, starting with making the V12 compatible with readily available fuel. It has also removed the ballast and FIA-regulation electronic systems, along with the racer's torque sensors. Otherwise, though, this is a top-class Le Mans car that can be run around a track of its owner's choosing. It still has a carbonfibre race seat with six-point harness, a fire suppression system and bespoke track tyres from Pirelli. Adam Carter, Aston Martin's head of endurance motorsport, said: 'It is important to emphasise that the Valkyrie LM is close to identical to the race car that is currently competing in WEC and IMSA, with only a few minor deviations to ensure it is a non-homologated variant and is accessible for customers to experience and enjoy. "Valkyrie LM represents the most authentic hypercar track experience that is now available.' Similarly to Ferrari's original XX track car programme, Aston Martin will store and transport the cars as part of a support programme for owners that aims to offer the "ultimate top-flight motorsport experience". Included as part of that, the company will also supply a team of engineers to set up the car and maintain it during the track days. It will also provide professional driver coaches and simulator sessions to ensure customers can "explore the limits of a machine designed to operate in excess of 200mph on the fast, flat-out kinks of the most famous race track in the world". Owners will be able to drive their cars for the first time at an "exclusive handover event" in the second quarter of 2026, before being invited to track days at Formula 1-standard circuits later in the year.
