French researchers sentenced for throwing explosives at Russian consulate in Marseille

Saudi Gazette28-02-2025

PARIS — Two researchers employed at France's main state research agency were handed an eight-month sentence on Thursday for throwing explosives at the Russian consulate in the southern French city of Marseille.
The two scientists, who work at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, carried out their attack on Monday 24 February — the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The researchers threw three plastic bottles, which contained a homemade mixture, as well as a cocktail of nitrogen and other chemical substances at the gardens of the Russian consulate, reported Radio France.
Of the three bottles that were thrown, two exploded and caused detonations. While there was no damage or injuries, the Russian consulate's avenue was cordoned off for several hours to allow bomb disposal experts to intervene.
The researchers were arrested the same evening at a pro-Ukraine rally held outside the Marseille town hall. During their subsequent court hearing, they admitted to having taken liquid nitrogen with a temperature of -190C from their workplace laboratory.
According to French broadcaster TF1, public prosecutor Olivier Redon said that "the facts were not dangerous", and that he believed the researchers exercised caution "on purpose" acting as "honest individuals".
One of the researchers is a 59-year-old man who is married to a Ukrainian woman. TF1 reported that his father-in-law has been sleeping on the couple's sofa since Russia launched its full-scale invasion.
While the researchers were handed eight-month prison sentences, the public prosecutor called for them to be able to serve them with electronic tags rather than in cells. The two are also banned from visiting the area surrounding the consulate and prohibited from carrying weapons for five years.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the incident had 'all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack'. — Euronews

Russia fired record 479 drones at Ukraine overnight: Kyiv

Russia fired a record 479 drones at Ukraine in an overnight aerial barrage, Kyiv's air force said on Monday, the latest massive attack as Moscow rejects calls for a ceasefire. The attack caused damage in several Ukrainian regions, though there were no reports of people killed or mass casualties. 'Enemy air strikes were recorded in 10 spots,' the Ukrainian air force said. The mayor of the western city of Rivne, Oleksandr Tretyak, called it 'the largest attack' on the region since the start of the war. Russia has escalated its attacks across Ukraine in recent weeks, which Kyiv says demonstrate that Moscow has no intention of halting its three-year-long invasion and is not serious about peace talks. The barrages have raised concerns about the capacity of Ukraine's stretched air defense systems. But the air force said that it shot down or intercepted 460 of the drones, as well as 19 out of 20 missiles fired by Russia overnight. Ukraine also said it had launched its own overnight strike on an electronics factory that makes parts for Russian drones, with local Russian officials saying the facility had to temporarily suspend production after the attack.

Ukraine says Russia launched 479 drones in the war's biggest overnight drone bombardment

KYIV, Ukraine: Russia launched 479 drones at Ukraine in the war 's biggest overnight drone bombardment, the Ukrainian air force said Monday. Apart from drones, 20 missiles of various types were fired at different parts of Ukraine, according to the air force, which said the barrage targeted mainly central and western areas of Ukraine. Ukraine's air defenses destroyed 277 drones and 19 missiles in mid-flight, an air force statement said, claiming that only 10 drones or missiles hit their target. It was not possible to independently verify the claim. Russia's aerial attacks usually start late in the evening and end in the morning, because drones are harder to spot in the dark. Russia has relentlessly battered civilian areas of Ukraine with Shahed drones during the more than 3-year war. The attacks have killed more that 12,000 Ukrainian civilians, according to the United Nations. Russia says it targets only military targets.

Putin Approves Big Revamp of Russia's Navy, Kremlin Aide Says

Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a new naval strategy which aims to fully restore Russia's position as one of the world's leading maritime powers, Kremlin aide Nikolai Patrushev said in an interview published on Monday. Russia has the world's third most powerful navy after China and the United States, according to most public rankings, though the navy has suffered a series of high-profile losses in the Ukraine war. Patrushev, a former KGB officer who served with Putin in the northern Russian city of St Petersburg during Soviet times, said the new naval strategy - entitled "The Strategy for the Development of the Russian Navy up to 2050" - had been approved by Putin in late May. "Russia's position as one of the world's greatest maritime powers is gradually recovering," Patrushev told the Argumenti i Fakti newspaper in an interview. "It is impossible to carry out such work without a long-term vision of the scenarios for the development of the situation in the oceans, the evolution of challenges and threats, and, of course, without defining the goals and objectives facing the Russian Navy," Patrushev said. Patrushev gave no further details about the strategy, though Russia has ramped up spending on defense and security to Cold War levels as a percentage of gross domestic product. A US Department of Defense report said in 2021 that China had the largest navy in the world and that Beijing's overall battleforce is expected to grow to 460 ships by 2030. Open source data suggests Russia has 79 submarines, including 14 nuclear powered ballistic missile submarines, as well as 222 warships. Its main fleet is the Northern Fleet headquartered in Severomorsk on the Barents Sea.
