Iraqi salary bill set to soar, economist warns
Shafaq News/ Iraqi government spending on salaries is set to surge, potentially doubling to 5% over the next five years and putting the country's economy at serious risk, economist Manar al-Obaidi, head of the Iraq Future Foundation, warned on Tuesday. In a Facebook post, al-Obaidi forecast a 27% increase in Iraq's public sector salaries in 2024, surpassing 60 trillion IQD ($42.37 billion) for the first time—an amount equal to 40% of total government expenditures. 'Salaries have reached dangerous levels that will have catastrophic consequences for Iraq's economy,' he cautioned. He noted that salary expenses have risen by 50% over the past five years, without a corresponding increase in non-oil revenues or improvements in public services, questioning, 'What's the benefit of raising the salary bill?' Meanwhile, the ongoing salary dispute between Baghdad and Erbil has fueled persistent tension, with the federal government's recent decision to halt salary disbursements to the Region's employees sparking criticism in Kurdistan. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) condemned the federal government's decision calling it a violation of constitutional rights and a form of political exploitation.

Older iPhones, Androids lose WhatsApp access
Shafaq News/ WhatsApp will stop working on several older smartphones beginning Sunday, June 1, according to Meta, the app's parent company. The update, initially planned for May 5, was postponed for several weeks before June 1 was confirmed as the final rollout date. Starting Sunday, WhatsApp will only be compatible with iPhones running iOS 15.1 or later and Android devices operating on version 5.1 or newer. Affected models include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. Some reports have also indicated that support may be discontinued for the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and the first-generation iPhone SE. These devices, however, can still receive updates up to iOS 15.8.4, which enables their continued access to WhatsApp as long as the software is kept up to date.

Trump to Apple: Manufacture iPhones in US or face 25% tariff
Shafaq News/ On Friday, US President Donald Trump warned Apple that iPhones sold in the United States must be produced domestically or face a 25% tariff. 'I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhones sold in the United States to be manufactured and built in the United States — not India or anyplace else,' Trump posted on Truth Social. 'If that is not the case, a tariff of at least 25% must be paid.' Apple shares fell 2.5% in pre-market trading following the announcement, dragging tech indices lower. The company recently expanded production in India to reduce reliance on China, stating that most iPhones sold in the US this quarter will be assembled there. While fully assembled smartphones are temporarily exempt from US tariffs on Chinese goods, many iPhone components remain subject to import duties, which Apple estimates to cost the company around $900 million this quarter. Apple has not responded to Trump's latest remarks, but experts say a sustained tariff threat could reshape global electronics supply chains and renew tensions over US industrial policy.
