
Wexford student overcomes obstacles to obtain All Ireland Scholarship funded by JP McManus
Sophia Tracey a student of Gorey Community School Leaving Certificate class of 2024 received the All Ireland Scholarship funded by JP McManus. Incredibly, Sophia got 625 points in her Leaving Certificate last year. This achievement is further enhanced as Sophia managed to obtain these results while also training as an international ice skater.
Sophia who is a member of the Irish National Figure Skating Team, has won several national titles and has competed at many international competitions including the ISU Junior Grand Prix.
She has also been offered a place in Biomedical Science in UCD. Sophia was accompanied by her former Principal Michael Finn at the ceremony in Limerick held on Friday, April 25.

He said: "She always had a number of plates spinning at any one time. "Swimming, for example, 16 hours a week. Music, four hours per week. Attendance and practice. Piano, seven hours a week. Attendance and practice. School or university attendance. Homework and exams that go with both. "And of course, her friends. It all started with a small group in Rappahigan, but steadily grew during her time in St. Angeles. Then it grew again in Bruce, and once again in UCD and UCC. Her Munster team colleagues, her Irish team colleagues, and every friend from right around the country she made during when competing at galas. "And of course, on top of this, there was the friends she made through the School of Music and out socialising. "How she managed to give them all the time, attention, energy, love and affection is beyond me. "But Ellen didn't lead with elbows. She led with open arms. That made her stand out. Tom told how Ellen's mum Violet found the young woman's diary shortly after her passing. Reading out an entry from the diary to mourners, who were dressed in "their most colourful outfits" as requested by Ellen's family, Tom said it "shows us how truly special a person she was". A particularly poignant section of the diary read: "All I want is for everything to be perfect. My family. That is what I want to be perfect. What can it be? We need to try harder. We need to realise that. I just want Mum, Dad, Charlie, Mary and myself to be happy."

Students, parents and staff from Scoil Chonglais in Baltinglass came together recently to celebrate their achievements and the graduating class of 2025 at a series of annual ceremonies. The school's annual awards ceremony honoured a range of achievements, with talented students receiving awards for extracurricular activities, impeccable attendance, kindness, academic excellence, and contribution to sports, with a student from each year also receiving a Student of the Year award. The class of 2025 also celebrated their graduation ceremony with a memorable evening of celebration and reflection with their families and staff. The students were thanked for their contributions to the school and were wished well in their Leaving Certificate examinations. Among those in receipt of awards on the night were Ciara Fleming, who took home the Dave Hallahan Memorial Cup for Student of the Year, while Jaseer Murphy was awarded the Kevin Brown Memorial Cup for Project of the Year, and Ross Nolan received the Parents' Council Sports Person of the Year Award. Adding to the school's end-of-year festivities, students entertained their classmates and parents at the ever-popular transition year showcase, where certificates were handed out to TY pupils for all their activities throughout the year. 'At Scoil Chonglais, we are very passionate about celebrating success – a big congratulations to all our students who strive to do their very best every day,' a school spokesperson said. 'Our school awards ceremony was all about celebrating the students' successes, while the TY showcase was a chance for students and their families to come together and acknowledge the great work they have done this year. 'A big congratulations to our class of 2025 – we are very proud of them all,' they added. 'We had such a lovely night celebrating with the class of 2025.
