Joe Pride-trained Private Eye begins return with trial at Warwick Farm on Tuesday
Private Eye, notable by his absence during the Sydney autumn carnival, takes a significant step towards a return to racing with a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on Tuesday.
Trainer Joe Pride 's rising eight-year-old, already the winner of $11.9 million prizemoney, is contesting an 800m heat against seven rivals.
Pride has deliberately held Private Eye back this autumn after the gelding raced deep into the spring and early summer last year.
Private Eye contested his third successive The Everest last spring, finishing sixth to Bella Nipotina – he ran second to Giga Kick in 2022 and third to stablemate Think About It in 2023 – before winning the Group 3 Festival Stakes and then finishing fourth in Robusto 's Group 2 The Ingham in December.
But Pride said the evergreen sprinter-miler was coming up well ahead of a Brisbane carnival campaign.
'Private Eye is going super,'' Pride said.
'He has been going from carnival to carnival for so long now and he finally missed a carnival during the autumn.
'But you wouldn't believe it, this was the only dry autumn we have had in Sydney for the last five of six years.
'He did race until mid-December last year so he needed a break and he is coming along really well.''

The Warwick Farm-based trainer said he plans to give Private Eye two barrier trials before a scheduled return to racing in the Group 1 $1 million Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on May 31 and then possibly the Group 1 $3 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at the same track two weeks later.
Pride has nominated six horses for the Hawkesbury stand-alone meeting on Saturday including Winx's half-sister City Of Lights for the Group 3 $250,000 Hawkesbury Crown (1300m).
The Pride stable has Dragonstone, In Flight and Testator Silens entered for the Listed $200,000 Hawkesbury Rush (1100m) and Cool Jakey and Excelladus will line up in the Benchmark 88 Handicap (1400m).

The Hawkesbury Race Club has taken a bumper 212 nominations for the 10-race program which marks the 20th anniversary since the first Hawkesbury stand-alone race day.
Trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman have entered Punch Lane for the Group 3 $250,000 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) after the gelding's brilliant win at Royal Randwick last Saturday.
Tavi Time at $3.50 and Matcha Latte at $4.50.

'It'd be a great story for Golden Mile, who has come back from stud duties and he's been warming to a win. 'If he can get that in this prep in the Stradbroke, that'd be some feat to pull off and all the accolades would go to Golden Mile himself. 'I wouldn't seek to diminish the depth of the field at all and I haven't seen the final field either. Joe Pride taking on Stradbroke Handicap history with Private Eye
Trainer Joe Pride isn't concerned by historical trends as he readies Private Eye for a remarkable bid to win the Group 1 $3m Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. With the withdrawal of Giga Kick, Pride's sprinter Private Eye has 57kg and will wear the No.1 saddlecloth when he goes first-up into Queensland's premier sprint. Crawl won the 2001 Stradbroke off a 56-day break between runs but Private Eye will go to Eagle Farm having not started since his fourth behind Robusto in The Ingham at Randwick on December 14, last year – a gap of 182 days. 'Records are made to be broken and I don't think first-up is what it used to be,'' Pride said. 'I've also given Private Eye four barrier trials, I'm very happy with him, and he won't be beaten on the score of fitness.'' Giga Kick, who won the 2022 The Everest beating Private Eye, had 58.5kg in the Stradbroke but after finishing only sixth in Joliestar's Kingsford Smith Cup last Saturday, owner Jonathan Munz confirmed the chestnut is out of Saturday's big race. Munz said although Giga Kick seems to have pulled up well the gelding will undergo a thorough veterinary examination and won't run in Stradbroke. Private Eye is attempting to become the first horse to have the No.1 saddlecloth and shoulder 57kg or more to win the Stradbroke since Rough Habit scored under 58.5kg in 1992. 'His trial last Friday at Rosehill was everything I wanted to see from him. He jumped and put himself on the speed,'' said Pride, who won the Stradbroke with Think About It two years ago. 'He wanted to be there and that's the best version of Private Eye. He ran second in a Stradbroke three years ago (behind Alligator Blood) and I feel he's ready to run super again on Saturday.'' Private Eye, already the winner of $11.9m prizemoney, is on the third line at $11 of early TAB fixed odds betting for the Stradbroke behind the Team Hayes-trained War Machine at $2.80. Meanwhile, Pride said he has decided to give In Flight a short break after her tough win in the Bob Charley AO Stakes at Royal Randwick last Saturday. 'In Flight came out of the race really well but I'm going to give her eight to 10 days off,'' Pride said. 'The plan then is to take her to Melbourne for the (Group 3 $200,000) Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield (July 12). 'She should get the wet track she likes down there at that time of year.''

Grafterburners primed for round three against Cool Archie in Group 1 JJ Atkins at Eagle Farm
Group 1 JJ Atkins favourite Cool Archie was too good for fellow Queenslander Grafterburners the last time they met, but Kelly Schweida has made a case for the result being reversed on Saturday. Chris and Corey Munce -trained Cool Archie, who has won his last four, and Schweida's colt Grafterburners are the top two betting picks in Saturday's JJ Atkins at $3 and $6 respectively. Cool Archie has had the measure of fellow two-year-old colt Grafterburners the last two times, including in their last meeting in the $1m BRC Sires' Produce Stakes where Cool Archie won from last and Grafterburners finished sixth. But Grafterburners, who scored the $500,000 QTIS Jewel in March, has endured luckless wide runs the last two times he has raced. And it didn't help his cause when jockey Jason Collett dropped the whip approaching the 200m in the Sires'. 'But my horse has just had no luck the last two runs. 'And the jockey dropped the stick (whip) last time, which probably doesn't help on the heavy track we saw that day. 'I guess though I can make all the excuses I like, but my horse still didn't win. 'But we definitely should have finished closer the other day.' Legendary jockey Craig Williams gets the call-up to partner Grafterburners in the JJ Atkins (1600m). Grafterburners has never stretched out beyond 1400m but two-time Group 1-winning trainer Schweida suspects the mile won't be a problem. Although he concedes he won't know for sure until he tests him in the JJ Atkins. 'All you can do is win and that is what the Chris Munce horse has been doing,' Schweida said. 'That horse definitely loves the wet but I think it goes good on the dry too. 'He's won four on the bounce, he's a good horse, and I don't know anyone who would be bagging a horse that keeps winning. 'As for my horse, I think he will run a mile but it's hard to say until he has a go. 'He just needs a cosy run rather than getting stuck out on a limb in his races like he has been.' In all-in JJ Atkins betting on TAB fixed odds, ahead of Tuesday's final field and barrier draw, Chris Waller 's Yulong-owned colt Hidden Achievement is on the $6 line with Grafterburners. The others other double figures in betting are Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott -trained colt Farnicle, runner-up behind Cool Archie in the Sires', and Michael Freedman 's gelding Aerodrome. Both are $8 chances.
