No customers, Ayodhya chopper ride stalled

Hindustan Times14-05-2025

The helicopter tour of Ayodhya, providing an aerial view of the temple town and the Ram temple, has been called off again, due to a lack of customers.
The helicopter service, launched on February 19, only operated for a week.
The reasons behind the service failing were high fares and only eight minutes of flying time, including one minute for take-off and one minute for landing, people in the know of things said.
Om Prakash Singh, a tourism expert of Ayodhya said, 'The per round fare is ₹4,130. If a family of four wishes to ride then they have to pay ₹16,520, which is almost half the monthly earning of a common man,' said Singh, adding 'the helicopter company must decrease its fare below ₹2,000 and and extend the flight time to 15 minutes only then can they attract tourists.'
Regional tourism officer RP Yadav declined to comment on the matter, stating that the decrease in pilgrims might have affected the service, but he did not have further information.
In the eight-minute aerial tour, six people were accommodated at a time, including the pilot. The ride began with the helicopter taking off from the helipad along the banks of River Saryu. Bookings were only available online, but currently, the helicopter remains on the helipad as there are no pilgrims.
Mahant Ramdas of Kartaliya Ashram stated that starting tourism services without proper groundwork is not appropriate. A geographical study of Ayodhya was needed, along with understanding the local environment. Besides, the fare for the eight-minute aerial tour was too high. Ordinary pilgrims cannot afford such a fare, leading to the service failing, he said.
In March, 2023, a helicopter service was launched in Ayodhya, which had to be shut down within a few days. This service also offered an eight-minute aerial view of Ayodhya to pilgrims, with each pilgrim required to pay ₹3,000. Initially started as a 15-day trial, the company withdrew after just 11 days.
Few takers for cruise service too
The cruise service in the temple town has also failed to attract tourists.
Tourism and culture minister Jaiveer Singh had inaugurated the Jatayu cruise service on September 8, 2023. However, the service was discontinued in less than two months. The effort was to offer cruise-like experiences, but it failed to attract tourists. Additionally, the water level of the Sarayu River remains very low from November to April, making cruise operations impossible.
Installation of idols in temples on June 5
The installation of 14 idols in the Ram Temple complex will take place on June 5, with 101 scholars performing the rituals.
On the occasion, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has planned a three-day consecration festival from June 3 to June 5, although rituals will begin on May 30. In all, 101 scholars from Kashi and Ayodhya will conduct the consecration.
The consecration of the 14 idols will occur simultaneously in the Ram Temple complex on Ganga Dussehra (June 5). The consecration sequence will begin with the installation of the Shiva Lingam on May 30, in the Shiv Temple of the precinct.
The ritual will commence with the worship of the sacrificial pavilion, followed by various other ceremonies. During this time, Vedic scholars will chant mantras, recite the Valmiki Ramayana, read the four Vedas, and perform other rituals.
Marble thrones, two feet high, have been crafted for the installation of the deities in their respective temples.
Temples where idols will be installed:
- Six temples in the precinct: Lord Shiva, Sun God, Ganapati, Hanuman, Goddess Bhagwati, Goddess Annapurna
- Seven temples in the Sapt Mandapam: Sage Vashistha, Valmiki, Agastya, Vishwamitra, Ahalya, Shabari, Nishadraj

Construction to be complete by November: Ram Temple Trust

A DAY after the consecration ceremony of Ram Darbar and six temples in the parcotta (rampart) of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Shri Ram Janma Bhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust secretary Champat Rai said on Friday that while the construction work was likely to be 'mostly complete' by November, the six temples in the parcotta would be open for public only after the monsoon, while the Ram Darbar would be opened only when proper arrangements for the elderly and other arrangements are in place. Rai informed the Ram Darbar is at a height of 20 feet from the Garbha Griha (sanctum sanctorum) and would require pilgrims to climb 40 steps (stairs). He said that as this might be a difficult task for the elderly and others who are unable to take the stairs, an elevator or a 'lift' is under construction. He said other arrangements are also being made for the smooth movement of pilgrims and the darshan of the Ram Darbar would open only after that. He said darshan (for the public) at the temples in parcotta might take even more time and would be allowed only after the monsoon is over as construction work is in progress. 'It is our responsibility to keep the security of pilgrims in mind,' Rai told mediapersons in Ayodhya. Asked about the completion of the temple, he said that one main task is left and that is hosting of flag on the top of the temple, which would also be a religious ceremony. He said that this would take place keeping the weather conditions in mind. 'When it is not too cold… and the weather is pleasant and by that time the construction work would also be done. The 'Dhwaja Rohan' will take place then,' he said. Meanwhile, sources said the Trust is planning a big event in November this year to commemorate the completion of the construction work. 'We can say after yesterday's event that construction work is nearing completion,' said Rai, adding that after November, 'around seven per cent of the work would remain and that would continue.' Sources said that while construction work is likely to be completed by the year-end, the landscaping would take time and is likely to continue as different vatikas, different types of trees and plants are to be planted in a 'green belt to be developed surrounding the temple.'

IRCTC's Ebitda growth rate mirrors pace of a slow-moving train

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corp. Ltd (IRCTC)'s results for the three months ended March (Q4FY25) proved unimpressive versus expectations of a solid quarter due to the Mahakumbh event-related push. Ebitda growth was 6% year-on-year to ₹385 crore, with margin compressing by almost 100 basis points to 30.4%. A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point. Recall that IRCTC had offered food service in Aastha Express to Ayodhya in Q4FY24 during the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple. Thus, there was hope that it would be done for Mahakumbh special trains, too. In the Q4FY25 earnings call, the management clarified that these trains operated without catering facilities because the government's aim was to accommodate more passengers to Mahakumbh and also clear the subsequent rush from there. The outcome: IRCTC's catering revenue was unchanged year-on-year at ₹529 crore. The segment's profitability improvement isn't impressive either, as the base quarter had an abnormally low margin. Sequentially, the margin was flat at 12%. Also Read: KEC is making amends to repair margin, allay debt concerns IRCTC's mainstay business remains internet ticketing, contributing about 75% of its total FY25 Ebit. The segment has two revenue streams of convenience fee (simply put, the online ticket booking charges) and non-convenience fee from advertising and ancillary services for buying food, travel insurance, etc. Convenience fee grew 9% year-on-year as online ticket booking volume increased by 10%. While volume growth is not a problem, the concern here is about the 7% quarter-on-quarter fall in average fee per ticket to ₹18.6. The fee is different for AC and non-AC ticket booking, and also for booking payments made using Unified Payments Interface (UPI) or other modes that include netbanking and cards. The share of UPI-based payments has been steadily climbing up, from 45% in Q1FY25 to 47.7% in Q4FY25, which puts pressure on the average fee per ticket as the convenience fee is lower on payments made using UPI. Bright spot The tourism segment was the only bright spot in the results, which essentially is a packaged tour business offering options for religious and luxurious tours. Tourism Ebit soared by 161% on-year to ₹50 crore with margin almost doubling to 18.1% in Q4FY25. Bharat Gaurav train and Maharaja Express have contributed to the growth. Also Read: PMI: India's services exports bump may lose steam amid global economic gloom For FY25, the two trains clocked revenue of ₹277 crore and ₹92 crore, respectively. While Bharat Gaurav's revenue is higher, its margin is lower at 8% versus 18% of Maharaja Express, as the former operates in the affordable segment and the latter in the luxurious travel category. The management is optimistic that the tourism segment will maintain its upward trajectory, but the segment's past performance has been volatile. Meanwhile, IRCTC is likely to get initial approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a payment aggregation license within the next couple of months. However, even after the business starts, it would be tough to make inroads given the wafer-thin margin. The space is already crowded with well-entrenched players such as PhonePe and Razorpay. High valuation As such, the new business initiative is unlikely to change the trajectory of the stock, which is down 15% over the past one year even as the Ebitda CAGR over the last two years to FY25 has been 10%. The decline in the stock is thus indicative of the correction in its rich valuation. Ebitda is short for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation. Also Read: Ola Electric's new breakeven targets appear more like wishful thinking Bloomberg consensus estimates show Ebitda growth in FY26 could go up to 18%, which appears a tad optimistic. The decline in stock price pushes the enterprise value (EV) (numerator in EV/Ebitda) lower, while optimistic Ebitda estimates push the denominator higher. Despite that, the valuation still remains expensive at EV/Ebitda of 33x based on Bloomberg consensus estimates for FY26.
