How to make chemical free shampoo at home
Shampoos in the market may or may not suit your hair type, and they may burn a hole in your pocket to buy a bottle and let it go to waste. While most of us are becoming increasingly conscious about what goes on our skin and scalp, more people are switching to a chemical-free shampoo that can be a game changer for hair health.
Commercial shampoos are full of sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, which strip the scalp of natural oils and coat the hair, causing long-term damage. If you are sold on the idea of using a chemical-free shampoo, here's how you can make a gentle, 100% chemical-free shampoo at home with ingredients that nourish your hair from root to tip:
Why go chemical-free?
No harsh ingredients: Natural shampoos are always sulfate-free and paraben-free.
No nasties in the shampoo means no damage.
Scalp friendly: Chemical-free shampoos reduces itchiness, dandruff, and dryness
Eco-conscious: since this shampoo is homemade and not packaged, it has zero-waste and biodegradable
Budget-friendly: Your pockets will thank you, as it is made with kitchen or pantry staples that are low cost.
DIY chemical-free shampoo recipe
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons shikakai powder (natural cleanser)
2 tablespoons reetha (soapnut) powder (natural foaming agent)
1 tablespoon amla powder (for strengthening roots)
1 tablespoon fenugreek (methi) powder (for conditioning)
2-3 drops of essential oil (like lavender or tea tree) – optional
2 cups of water
How to prepare the shampoo
Boil the base
In a pan, add 2 cups of water.
Mix all powders (shikakai, reetha, amla, and fenugreek). Let it simmer for 10–15 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
Cool and strain
Once the mixture cools down, strain it using a muslin cloth or fine sieve.
Add essential oil
Mix 2–3 drops of your favorite essential oil for fragrance and added benefits.
Store it
Pour the shampoo into a clean glass bottle or old shampoo dispenser. Keep it refrigerated if you're storing it for more than 5 days.
How to use this chemical-free shampoo?
Wet your hair thoroughly.
Apply the
natural shampoo
all over your scalp and hair.
Massage gently for 2–3 minutes.
Rinse well with lukewarm water.
Note:
Natural shampoos don't lather like commercial ones — but they cleanse just as effectively without harming your hair.
Tips to remember when trying this
chemical free shampoo
Always patch test new ingredients to prevent allergies. This shampoo works best when you follow a regular champi session with a herbal hair oil.
You can experiment and add more natural hair-benefiting ingredients like aloe vera gel, hibiscus leaves, and green tea for added benefits.
Switching to a chemical-free shampoo may take a few washes for your scalp to adjust, but once it does and you don't mind the non-lathering shampoo, you'll notice softer, stronger, and healthier hair. Trust the process and believe that nature truly knows best.

Try These Astrological Remedies to Improve Focus at the Workplace
Many people often complain that they are unable to concentrate on their work. Some say that frequent breaks and chatting with coworkers distracts them. Others point to social media and unnecessary websites as major reasons for lack of focus. According to Celebrity Astrologer Parduman Suri, certain astrological remedies can help maintain better concentration while working at the office. - If a person has a Chandra Dosh (Moon affliction) in their birth chart, it may be one of the reasons for poor focus. Worshipping the Moon and offering prayers to Lord Shiva on Mondays can help pacify the Moon. - If Mercury, the planet of intellect, is weak in the horoscope, then worshipping Lord Ganesha on Wednesdays can be beneficial. Offerings like coconut, gram flour sweets (besan laddoo), and doob grass are considered effective. - Wear a Four Mukhi (four-faced) or Six Mukhi (six-faced) Rudraksha. The Four Mukhi Rudraksha is known to enhance concentration, memory, and mental clarity, while the Six Mukhi Rudraksha reduces restlessness and increases interest in studies. - To strengthen Mercury, wearing a minimum 6-ratti Emerald (Panna) on the ring finger can be beneficial. Emerald is associated with Mercury and is believed to improve intellect, focus, and concentration. - Wear green-colored clothes and donate green moong beans on Wednesdays. - Chanting "Om" at the workplace can help calm the mind and prevent it from wandering. Did you know that just like your body, your home also needs an energetic detox? Our homes are more than just walls and furniture, they are spaces capable of absorbing and retaining both positive and negative energies over time. According to Vastu Shastra, Salt is believed to possess strong absorbent and purifying qualities. Here's how you can cleanse and reset your home's energy in just five minutes: Place salt bowls in corners: Place small bowls of rock salt or sea salt in the four corners of each room, especially in spaces that feel emotionally heavy or tense. As you place each bowl, repeat this affirmation - 'These salt bowls will absorb all the negative and unhelpful energy of this room'. Leave it for 24 hours. Then, you can either discard the salt in running water or flush it away. Salt Water Mopping: Add a tablespoon of salt to your mop water and use it to clean the floors. This provides a complete energy cleanse of the place. This not only physically disinfects the space but also helps clear out trapped negative energies.
