Five people have been rescued from an alligator-infested swamp almost two days after their plane crashed in the Amazonian jungle in Bolivia.
The small aircraft, carrying the pilot, three women and a child, crashed on Wednesday, but the group were not rescued until Friday morning, the Bolivian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
None of the group were seriously injured and they survived on chocolate and cassava flour during the ordeal.
The plane had taken off from the Baures municipality in northern Bolivia and was bound for the city of Trinidad, the Ministry said.
An hour after take-off, the pilot reported technical issues before all contact with the aircraft was lost, according to the Ministry.
The pilot, identified by local media outlets as 27-year-old Pablo Andrés Velarde, was able to carry out an emergency landing but landed near an alligator nest, he told local outlet Unitel.
"We fell into a swamp, and right next to it, there was an alligator nest. But thanks to the fuel that spilled from the aircraft, it contaminated the water and the strong smell of that scared them off, not completely, but they didn't approach us to attack us," he told Unitel in an interview from his hospital bed on Friday.
One survivor, Mirtha Fuentes, told local media of her emotional disbelief after surviving the plane crash.
"We all cried with happiness because we were alive, with bruises, but alive and very lucky, thanks to God and the pilot's quick thinking and intelligence," she told Unitel.
Bolivia's defense ministry and civil defense activated a search and rescue operation, but the first 48 hours were hindered by "adverse weather conditions," the ministry said. Multiple flights passed over the survivors but failed to spot them, local media reported.
The group survived on rationed food recovered by the pilot from the submerged plane, the pilot told Unitel, before they were discovered by fishermen early Friday morning.
The five survivors were airlifted to the city of Trinidad, in a rescue helicopter from Bolivia's Air Force, the defense ministry said.
"Thanks to the work of our specialised personnel, at this time the five rescued individuals, including a child, are alive and we are making every effort to take them to safe areas and provide them with the medical attention they need," Bolivian president Luis Arce said in a statement.

Ukraine strikes bridge connecting Russia to Crimea with underwater explosives

By Christian Edwards , Svitlana Vlasova and Anna Chernova , CNN Ukraine's SBU on June 3 published a video showing a large underwater explosion beneath the Kerch Bridge. Photo: SBU/Telegram via CNN Newsource Ukraine said on Tuesday that it had hit the bridge connecting Russia and the occupied Crimean Peninsula with explosives planted underwater, in its third attack on the vital supply line for Moscow's forces since the full-scale war began in 2022. Ukraine's security service, the SBU, said on Telegram that its agents had mined the piers of the road and rail Crimean Bridge, also called the Kerch Bridge, and detonated the first explosive at 4.44am Tuesday. The whole operation took several months, it added. The agency said it had used 1100 kilograms of explosives which "severely damaged" the underwater pillars supporting the bridge. Traffic on the bridge was suspended early Tuesday morning, then again mid-afternoon, before resuming shortly before 6pm local time. Although the scale of the damage was not immediately clear, Tuesday's attack is the latest example of the SBU's attempts to blindside Moscow and demonstrate that there are costs to continuing its war. On Sunday, the SBU launched an audacious drone attack on Moscow's fleet of nuclear-capable bombers, stationed at various Russian airfields thousands of miles away from Ukraine. An image released by the SBU showed damage to the Crimean Bridge. Photo: Security Service of Ukraine via CNN Newsource Vasul Malyuk, the head of the SBU, said that attack caused an estimated US$7 billion in damage and had struck 34 percent of Russia's strategic cruise missile carriers, which have been used to pummel Ukrainian cities throughout the war. The SBU said Malyuk had also overseen Tuesday's attack. "God loves the Trinity, and the SBU always sees things through to the end and never does the same thing twice. We previously struck the Crimean Bridge twice, in 2022 and 2023. So today we continued this tradition, this time underwater," Malyuk said. He stressed that the bridge is a "completely legitimate target," since Russia uses it "as a logistical artery to supply its troops" fighting in mainland Ukraine. As well as serving as a vital supply line for Moscow's troops, the Crimean Bridge also has huge symbolic value for President Vladimir Putin, embodying his objective to bind the Ukrainian peninsula to Russia. Built after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, Putin opened the bridge in 2018. The project cost around US$3.7 billion. Tuesday's attack marks the third time that Ukraine has targeted the bridge since Moscow's full-scale invasion in 2022. In October of that year, a fuel truck exploded on the bridge, engulfing a part of it in flames. In July 2023, the SBU said it had blown up a part of the bridge using an experimental sea drone. Both times, Russia moved quickly to repair the damaged sections. As well as suspending traffic on the bridge, Russian authorities temporarily halted maritime traffic in the waters off Sevastopol, the largest city in Crimea, according to state media RIA Novosti. - CNN

Ukraine conducts ‘large-scale' operation targeting Russian airbases, security source says

By Svitlana Vlasova, Victoria Butenko and Tim Lister , CNN Smoke rises in Russia's Irkutsk region following a reported Ukrainian drone attack on a nearby airbase, in this still image from a video published on Sunday (Ukraine time). Photo: CNN / Governor of Irkutsk Region Igor Kobzev/ Handout via Reuters Ukraine has carried out large-scale drone strikes against a number of airbases deep inside Russia, destroying multiple combat planes, according to a source in the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU). The attacks are the most ambitious simultaneous strikes on Russian airbases carried out by Ukraine since the war began. The SBU source said that Russian bombers were "burning en masse" at four airbases hundreds of miles apart, adding that drones had been launched from trucks inside Russia. More than 40 aircraft were known to have been hit, according to the source, including TU-95 and Tu-22M3 strategic bombers and one of Russia's few remaining A-50 surveillance planes. The airfields targeted included Belaya in Irkutsk, some 4500km from Ukraine's border with Russia, and the Dyagilevo base in Ryazan in western Russia, about 520km from Ukraine, which is a training centre for Russia's strategic bomber force. The Olenya base near Murmansk in the Arctic Circle, more than 2000km from Ukraine, was also struck, according to the source, as well as the Ivanovo airbase, more than 800km from Ukraine. Ivanovo is a base for Russian military transport aircraft. Emergency service workers at the scene of a bridge collapse in Russia's Bryansk region on Sunday. The Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed Ukraine had targeted Russian airfields across five regions on Sunday, calling the drone strikes "terrorist attacks." The ministry said strikes were repelled in the Ivanovo, Ryazan and Amur regions but that "several pieces of aircraft" caught fire after attacks in the Murmansk and Irkutsk regions. It added that the fires had since been extinguished. There were no casualties as a result of the attacks, the ministry continued, adding that "some participants in the terrorist attacks have been detained". The governor of Irkutsk region, Igor Kobziev, said that drones had been launched from a truck near the Belaya base. Kobziev said on Telegram that the exact number of drones deployed had not been determined. Emergency and security services were at the site, he added. SBU drones were targeting aircraft that bomb Ukrainian cities every night, the SBU source said - estimating the damage caused to the Russian side at more than US$2 billion (NZ$3.3b). One video supplied by the source purportedly shows the Belaya airfield in flames and the voice of the head of the SBU, Lt Gen. Vasyl Malyuk, commenting on the situation. "How beautiful Belaya airfield looks now. Enemy's strategic aircraft," he says. CNN was able to confirm the location of that video, as well as two others posted on social media showing smoke rising from the Belaya airbase. It was not immediately able to independently verify other videos provided by the SBU. The SBU source said that the operation was "extremely complicated from a logistical point of view," with the drones carried inside wooden mobile homes that had been carried into Russia on trucks. "The drones were hidden under the roofs of the houses, which were already placed on trucks. At the right moment, the roofs were remotely opened, and the drones flew to hit Russian bombers." One video purportedly of one attack appears to show drones rising from a truck, as vehicles pass on a nearby highway. Another image shows the roof of the truck on the ground. The source added that people involved were already back in Ukraine. CNN's Frankie Vetch, Eve Brennan and Catherine Nicholls contributed to this report. - CNN

Two reportedly dead after Mexican Navy training ship strikes Brooklyn Bridge

By Michelle Watson and Mauricio Torres , CNN Masted Mexican Navy training ship Cuauhtémoc sits, after colliding with the Brooklyn Bridge. Photo: AFP / AFPTV / Cecilia Sanchez Two people died and 17 others were injured, when a Mexican Navy training ship hit the Brooklyn Bridge, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said on Sunday (US time). "Earlier tonight, the Mexican Navy tall ship Cuauhtemoc lost power and crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge", Adams posted on X. "At this time, of the 277 on board, 19 sustained injuries, two of which remain in critical condition, and two more have sadly passed away from their injuries." Video showed the ship's mast hitting the underside of the bridge and breaking, as the vessel passed through, with pieces falling down towards the deck. No visible damage could be seen on the bridge, which opened to traffic on Saturday night, after being shut briefly. The sailboat hit the bridge about 8.26pm and people are being "aided", a New York Police Department spokesperson told CNN. A source with knowledge of the crash previously told CNN 20 people were injured. "During the departure manoeuvre of the Cuauhtémoc Sailboat in New York, an incident occurred with the Brooklyn Bridge that caused damage to the training ship, temporarily preventing the continuation of the training cruise," the Mexican Navy said in an X post. "The status of the personnel and material is under review by naval and local authorities, who are providing support." BREAKING: A Mexican Navy sailboat crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge Saturday evening, according to the New York Police Department and the Mexican Navy. The crash resulted in multiple injuries being reported, the NYPD said. The ship was on a training cruise, which took place every year, Mexican Navy spokesman Captain Juan Caballero told CNN, adding that the navy was working to determine how many people were on the vessel. Video from CNN affiliate WABC showed the vessel stopped at the base of the bridge and a crew on a tugboat responding. All lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge were briefly closed in both directions after the incident, but had reopened as of 10.30pm, according to New York emergency officials. "While inspections will remain ongoing, there are no signs of structural damage to the Brooklyn Bridge at this time," according to Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for Mayor Adams. NYPD told residents to avoid the area of Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport in Manhattan and Dumbo in Brooklyn. "Expect heavy traffic and a large presence of emergency vehicles in the surrounding area," police said on X. - CNN
