REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst Elias Rodriguez, 30, from Chicago, has been named as the suspect in the fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy staffers outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC.Authorities confirmed Rodriguez had no previous contact with law enforcement. He was detained shortly after the incident on Wednesday evening. The attack occurred outside the museum, near 3rd and F Streets in Northwest Washington—steps away from the FBI's field office and the U.S. Attorney's office.Washington Police Chief Pamela A. Smith stated that the suspect was seen pacing outside the museum before the shooting and was quickly taken into custody. 'Free Palestine, Free Palestine,' Rodriguez chanted after his arrest, she confirmed.A weapon was recovered at the scene, and while officials are still investigating the motive, the shooting is being treated as a targeted act of violence. The victims, a man and a woman, were staff members of the Israeli Embassy attending a Jewish event hosted by the American Jewish Committee at the Capital Jewish Museum. The shooting took place shortly after 9 p.m.
Tal Naim Cohen, spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy, said, 'Two of its staff members were shot at close range while attending a Jewish event at the museum.'The victims, reportedly a couple, were described by Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter as 'a beautiful couple' who were about to be engaged. 'We will not tolerate this violence or hate in our city.'The event was part of the AJC ACCESS Young Diplomats Reception, designed to connect Jewish young professionals and diplomats. The theme of the evening was 'turning pain into purpose,' with speakers from humanitarian groups focused on the Middle East and North Africa.Police said the suspect approached four individuals leaving the event and shot two of them before walking into the museum, where he was detained by security. Chief Smith said it was still unclear why Rodriguez entered the museum post-attack or what he planned next.
The incident happened during a period of heightened global tension following Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack in Israel and Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza. Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have surged in response, including outside embassies and across U.S. college campuses. 'This was a depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism,' said Danny Danon, Israel's Ambassador to the UN. 'Harming diplomats and the Jewish community is crossing a red line. We are confident that the U.S. authorities will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act.'President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social: 'These horrible D.C. killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW! Our thoughts are solely with the victims and their families.'Senator Chuck Schumer called the shooting 'a sickening act of antisemitism,' while Israeli President Isaac Herzog and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also issued strong condemnations. While the suspect remains in custody, police continue to probe the motivation behind the attack and whether it was a lone act or part of a broader threat. World of wars and bonfire of G7 vanities
A week is indeed a long time in geopolitics. On Tuesday, the world markets celebrated headlines about a trade deal between China and the US. On Friday, world markets plummeted following Israeli strikes on Iran. Real wars tend to make trade wars look insignificant. This week, the G7, the group of advanced economies, is observing the 50th anniversary of its origin in picturesque Kananaskis in Alberta, at the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. The theme, as always, is lofty: international peace and security, global economic stability and growth, digital transition and global challenges. The ground realities mock at the ballyhooed heft of advanced economies to sustain predictability and stability. Global trade is upended, thanks to Donald J Trump's America First tariff policies. Sure, there is a ceasefire on tariffs, a détente with China and talks about talks with other countries. Peace is in pieces. Trump's promise of peace in 24 hours is consigned to the bunker by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The ceasefire-for-hostages deal in Gaza is comatose. Newly 'liberated' Syria is haunted by sectarian killings despite a relief on sanctions—US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned the country is weeks away from an epic civil war. On Wednesday, after US declared the 'end of bombing', the Houthis warned of attacks. This week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu upped the ante as he authorised Israeli forces to attack Iran. With it, Trump's agenda in West Asia—and a possible Nobel honour—was washed off. In a sequence of complex manoeuvres, Israeli forces targeted the leadership of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, nuclear scientists, military units and nuclear facilities. The sequence is instructive. The audacious attacks were executed just before officials from Iran and the US were to meet in Oman over a new nuclear deal. The US president authorised the talks for the new deal and gave a deadline of 60 days; the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six countries including the US took 20 months.

Israeli military attack hits Yemen, reportedly targeting senior Houthi leader
Israeli forces recently carried out a targeted strike in Yemen, in an apparent assassination attempt against a senior figure in the Iran-backed Houthi movement, according to Israeli media. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not officially confirmed the operation, and both Israeli and Houthi officials have so far refrained from making public statements on the Houthis, who control large parts of northern Yemen, have been engaged in a campaign of maritime attacks in the Red Sea since November 2023, claiming solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The group is believed to have launched over 100 assaults on commercial vessels traversing one of the world's key shipping TENSIONS BETWEEN ISRAEL AND IRANThe reported strike in Yemen comes as Israel and Iran exchanged fresh hostilities late Saturday, escalating fears of a broader regional conflict. The Israeli military expanded its campaign against Iran with a surprise strike targeting the South Pars gas field, the world's largest, prompting a fierce response from Tehran. Iran launched missiles and drones toward Israel, according to Iranian state media, while the IDF confirmed it had intercepted multiple incoming projectiles and was continuing operations against military targets in Tehran. Missile strikes lit up the night skies over Jerusalem and Haifa, where a direct hit on a residential building killed a woman in her 20s and injured at least 13 canceled a scheduled round of nuclear talks with the United States in Oman. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the discussions were impossible amid what he called "barbarous" Israeli Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Iran had "seen nothing yet" and hinted at further action. Meanwhile, the White House said President Donald Trump had cautioned Iran against further escalation, offering a diplomatic off-ramp in exchange for a significant rollback of its nuclear program.
