Argentina not overly reliant on Messi, says Scaloni

CNA21 hours ago

Argentina have learned to cope with Lionel Messi's absences and no longer need to rejig the line-up when the Inter Miami forward is not available, manager Lionel Scaloni said ahead of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Colombia.
Since making his senior debut in 2005, Messi has scored 112 goals in 192 appearances for Argentina, winning the World Cup in 2022, two Copa America titles and a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The 37-year-old captain missed Argentina's 1-0 win over Uruguay and 4-1 thrashing of rivals Brazil in March due to injury, with Scaloni's side securing their place at the 2026 World Cup during that international break.
He returned to the squad for this month's World Cup qualifiers and made a substitute appearance in Argentina's 1-0 win over Chile last week.
"The team is now in a moment where it can play in the same way with Leo (Messi) or without Leo, which used to be more complex in the past as we had to change some players," Scaloni told reporters ahead of the match in Buenos Aires.
"But now we don't have this necessity and the team works in the same way, that's good."
While Argentina have already qualified for the World Cup in North America, Colombia are in the sixth and final automatic qualification spot and will be looking to put some distance between themselves and seventh-placed Venezuela with a win.
Colombia beat Argentina 2-1 when the sides last met in the World Cup qualifiers in September.
"It's a great team, and with great players, and it has a clear style that can put you in trouble," Scaloni said.
"We've analysed it, we've shown the players their strengths and what we want to take advantage of. It's going to be a nice game, especially because we play at home, so it's good for our people to see the players."

Schmidt backs Gordon's skills but no hints on Wallabies captaincy

SYDNEY - Australia coach Joe Schmidt has given a glowing review of Jake Gordon's importance to the Wallabies as a player but offered no clue to where the experienced scrumhalf fits in his leadership plans for the British & Irish Lions series. Schmidt, who will name his squad over the next two weeks, has not yet confirmed who will captain the Wallabies against the Lions but an Australian media report said last week it would be Gordon. The New South Wales Waratahs skipper was left out of the squad for the last World Cup by Eddie Jones but his test career was revived by Schmidt and he started all nine tests last year ahead of Tate McDermott and Nic White. "Jake, he's one of the leaders in the group, but so is Nic White ... and Tate McDermott has been a former captain," Schmidt told reporters in Perth. "Jake has a really good skill-set, mature player, very nice kicking game, one of the sharper passes around and he is utterly committed when he's on the grass. "His ability to cover corners and make tackles, involved in the physical stuff he's a multi-purpose sort of player, but at the sharp edge of his game is really his pass-kick, which were very helpful to us last year." The Lions play Argentina in Dublin next week before heading to Australia for seven tour matches and the three-test series in late July and early August. Schmidt said he knew from his time as Ireland coach just how special the Lions jersey was to the players who wore it and warned the Wallabies would really need to roll their sleeves up to be ready for the tests. "They can play in so many different ways," he said of the tourists. "They can be really physical, they can be square and coming at you. They can get you on the edges. They have got the likes of Tommy Freeman and Hugo Keenan, who are so good in the air that you're going to have to be good there. "We can just try to work as hard as we can, to be as well prepared to understand the threats they're going to bring, and be ready to combat them and also to try to put our stamp on the game a little bit, and take the initiative when we can." Australia seal World Cup spot with win over Saudi Arabia, as Oman deny Palestine

HONG KONG - Australia sealed qualification for the World Cup on June 10 with a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, while Oman kept their hopes of a place at the finals alive with a last-gasp 1-1 draw against Palestine in Jordan. The Socceroos only had to avoid a five-goal defeat to confirm their appearance at a sixth consecutive finals and goals from Connor Metcalfe and Mitch Duke earned the Australians a come-from-behind win to brush aside the Saudis. Abdulrahman Al-Obud had given the home side a glimmer of hope when he netted from close range in the 19th minute but Metcalfe equalised with three minutes left in the half to extinguish Saudi dreams. Duke then put the visitors in front in the 48th minute when he glanced Martin Boyle's free kick past Nawaf Al-Aqidi before Mat Ryan, making his 100th appearance for his country, saved a late penalty save to deny Salem Al-Dawsari an equaliser. The win confirms the Australians as second-place finisher in Group C behind Japan, who secured their spot at the finals in March. "It is special. It probably hasn't sunk in yet," said Tony Popovic, who took over as coach in September 2024 after Australia made a stuttering start to the third round of qualifying. "It's been a very intense period since I've joined. We've built a good foundation now (but) we want to really get better, kick on and try and do something special at the World Cup." Saudi Arabia took third place in Group C and will feature in a fourth phase of qualifiers in October alongside Indonesia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Oman. The Omanis kept their hopes alive at the expense of Palestine as Issam Al-Sabhi's penalty deep into stoppage time earned the Gulf side a draw that kept them in fourth place in Group B. A header by Oday Kharoub gave Palestine a 49th-minute lead and a second yellow card for Oman's Harib Al-Saadi had put Ihab Abu Jazar's side in control until the dying minutes, when Muhsen Al-Ghassani was brought down in the area. Al-Sabhi stepped up to send goalkeeper Rami Hamada the wrong way to seal fourth place in the group for Oman and eliminate the heartbroken Palestinians. Earlier in the evening, Japan crushed Indonesia 6-0 with Daichi Kamada scoring twice in the first half in Osaka as the Samurai Blue won Group C, while Wang Yudong's late penalty had China finish their campaign with a 1-0 win over Bahrain. Iran confirmed themselves as Group A winners with a 3-0 win over North Korea that came after Kye Tam was sent off for the visitors with 24 minutes remaining in Tehran. Mehdi Mohebi, Mehdi Taremi and Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh were all on target in the last 16 minutes to guarantee first place for the Iranians, who had secured their berth in March. Already-qualified Uzbekistan took second spot with a 3-0 win against Qatar in Tashkent while the United Arab Emirates claimed third ahead of the Qataris despite conceding a late goal to draw 1-1 with Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek. South Korea completed their commitments in Group B with a 4-0 thrashing of Kuwait to ensure Hong Myung-bo's World Cup-bound outfit topped the standings with an unbeaten record. Jordan, who qualified for their first World Cup on June 12, finished second in Group B despite losing 1-0 to Graham Arnold's Iraq in Amman. Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas lead Spain as Jenni Hermoso overlooked for Euro 2025

PHOTO: REUTERS MADRID - Jenni Hermoso was left out of Spain's squad for July's women's Euro 2025 on June 10, with two-time Ballon d'Or winners Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas set to be key players for the world champions. Coach Montse Tome included 11 members of the 2023 World Cup-winning squad. But Tome has decided again not to call up experienced forward Hermoso. She has insisted Hermoso's recent absence is a sporting decision. Ex-football federation chief Luis Rubiales forcibly kissed Hermoso after the 2023 Women's World Cup final for which he was fined €10,800 (S$15,800) for sexual assault, a sentence which is being appealed. 'I spoke with Jenni at the beginning of the year. We had a conversation. She came to the first Fifa matchday and didn't get many minutes,' Tome told a press conference of Spain's all-time leading women's scorer, who plays for Mexican club Tigres. 'We've evaluated her year, we've spoken with her coach on several occasions, and we've done what we have to do to see what we need or don't need from the players,' the coach continued. La Roja play a friendly against Japan on June 27, and two days later will head to Switzerland. They start their Euros campaign on July 3 against Portugal in Bern and will face Belgium and Italy on July 7 and 11.
