A new low-cost counter drone system in hard kill mode 'Bhargavastra' has been designed and developed by Solar Defence and Aerospace Ltd (SDAL), signifying a substantial leap in countering the escalating threat of drone swarms.
The micro rockets used in this counter-drone system underwent rigorous testing at the Seaward Firing Range in Gopalpur, achieving all designated objectives.
Three trials were conducted for the rocket at Gopalpur on May 13 in the presence of senior officials of Army Air Defence (AAD). Two trials were conducted by firing one rocket each.
One trial was conducted by firing two rockets in salvo mode within two seconds. All four rockets performed as expected and achieved the required launch parameters underscoring its pioneering technology in mitigating large-scale drone attacks.
Bhargavastra has advanced capabilities for detecting and eliminating small, incoming drones at distances of up to 2.5 km. It uses unguided micro rockets as the first layer of defence capable of neutralising drone swarms with a lethal radius of 20 metres, and guided micro-missile (already tested earlier) as the second layer for pinpoint accuracy, ensuring precise and impactful neutralisation.

Designed for seamless deployment across diverse terrains, including high-altitude regions of 5,000 metres and above from sea level, the system addresses the unique operational demands of India's armed forces.
Highlighting Bhargavastra's adaptability and cost-effectiveness, SDAL emphasised its indigenous design and the development of dedicated rocket and micro-missiles to neutralise hostile UAVs. The system is modular and can have an additional soft-kill layer to include jamming and spoofing.
The radar and other components can be configured as per user requirement and made to work in an integrated manner for layered and tiered AD (air defence) cover, enabling engagement of targets at longer ranges. Further, the system is also engineered for seamless integration with existing network-centric warfare infrastructure.
The system's radar can detect minute aerial threats from 6 to 10 km away. Its electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor suite further ensures precise identification of low radar cross-section targets.
This is another feather in the cap for the "Make in India" policy and a progressive step in further strengthening India's already robust air defence umbrella.

The report further adds that as of 2024, 4G remains the dominant subscription type with 53 per cent of the subscribers. It is forecast to decline to 230 million subscriptions by 2030, as users continue migrating to 5G. The sharp increase is driven by growing 5G internet penetration, affordable smartphones, and a rising appetite for video and digital services across urban and rural markets. Underpinned by strong population coverage, increasing data consumption, and accelerating Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) deployments, 5G penetration will continue with robust growth. By December 2024, 5G subscriptions in the country reached 290 million, representing 24 per cent of total mobile subscriptions. This figure is projected to climb to around 980 million by 2030, accounting for 75 per cent of all mobile subscriptions. Nitin Bansal, Managing Director, Ericsson India, said, "At Ericsson, we are proud to support the country's digitalisation based on the strong 4G and 5G infrastructure that we have set up in the country together with our partners, the communication service providers, that is enabling connectivity and driving inclusive growth in the country." On the global front, the 5G subscriptions are forecast to reach 6.3 billion by 2030, and will make up two-thirds of all mobile subscriptions. It is projected that Western Europe will have the highest 5G subscription penetration in 2030 at 93 per cent, followed closely by North America at 91 per cent and the Global Capability Centres (GCC) at 90 per cent. The report adds that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly becoming a significant selling point for smartphones. Efforts are being made to expand AI beyond the high-end segment to enable the services for a broader market. With the growth of AI applications and model complexity, tasks will be computed both on the device and in the network. This will put uplink capabilities and latency more into the focus of both application service providers and communication service providers, thereby adding to 5G subscriptions, it said. India has made large-scale mid-band deployments and reached around 95 per cent of its population covered by 5G network by 2024 end. According to the government data, since its launch in October 2022, 5G services have been rolled out in all states/UTs across the country and presently it is available in 99.6 per cent of the districts in the country.

New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Wednesday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to open up the space sector to private players as a 'turning point' that sparked a 'miraculous' transformation. He projected that the sector could grow to 40-45 billion US dollars in a decade, and added that experiments to be conducted by astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla during the Axiom-4 mission will help prepare for future space missions like Chandrayaan-4 and the Bharat Space Station planned for 2035. Singh said that one of the biggest milestones in India's space programme came when the private sector was allowed to participate. 'I think one of the greatest turning points in India's space journey has been PM Modi's pathbreaking decision to allow the private sector to step in. The change has been miraculous. The transformation in the last 4-5 years - there are thousands of crores of investment happening from the private sector,' Singh told ANI. He further said that India's space sector is set for rapid growth in the coming years. 'Our future projections indicate that in about 8-10 years we might go up to 4-5 times higher, about 40-45 billion US dollars. So, the opening of the space for the private sector was a very courageous decision which could have been taken only by a political dispensation with a tremendous amount of conviction and willpower,' the union minister said. Referring to India's growing ambitions in space exploration, Singh said the recent Axiom Mission 4 would provide valuable experience for future Indian missions. 'I think it will be a good experience also for future missions. This, coupled with Chandrayaan 4, also for missions like Bharat Space Station, which we plan to have by 2035 and for prolonged stay in space or in microgravity conditions - what are the arrangements to be put in place will also be learnt through the experiments to be conducted by Shubhanshu,' Singh said. Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hailed the successful launch of the Axiom Mission 4 and stated that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is carrying the wishes, hopes and aspirations of 1.4 billion Indian citizens. 'We welcome the successful launch of the Space Mission carrying astronauts from India, Hungary, Poland and the US. The Indian Astronaut, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, is on the way to become the first Indian to go to the International Space Station. He carries with him the wishes, hopes and aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians. Wish him and other astronauts all the success!' PM Modi said in a post on X. Singh, in a prior X post following the successful lift-off of Axiom Mission 4, said that India's rise to the status of a 'Viksit Bharat' has begun through space exploration. 'Congratulations, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla -- you are the first Indian Astronaut to embark on a mission to the International Space Station. Indeed,a proud moment for India! ISRO's growing global collaborations, after the reforms introduced by the government headed by PM Narendra Modi, have placed India as a frontline nation in Space exploration,' Singh wrote. He said Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will carry out seven important experiments designed by Indian institutes. The minister also took the opportunity to remember and honour the visionaries behind India's space ambitions, Vikram Sarabhai and Satish Dhawan.
