The rare opportunity Cooper Flagg has that makes him feel ‘blessed'
Cooper Flagg is in a rare, but fortunate situation.
Most first overall draft picks are tasked with instantly becoming the No. 1 option of a team coming off all-time-low types of seasons – but Flagg won't necessarily have that burden as he joins a Dallas Mavericks team alongside likely future Hall of Famers Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving.
'A lot of people in this position or this situation aren't granted this opportunity, so I just feel really blessed and grateful for the situation I've been given,' Flagg said Friday during his Mavericks introductory press conference. 'I'm just looking forward to being a sponge. Just getting down here, I'm excited to just learn, soak it all in and learn from the guys that are older and have been through it all before.'

Dallas is fresh off a 2024 NBA Finals appearance led by now-Laker Luka Doncic, but the Mavericks found themselves in the draft lottery following season-derailing injuries to Davis and Irving following the blockbuster Doncic trade.
With just a 1.8 percent chance at landing the No. 1 pick in the draft, the unthinkable became reality as the Mavericks captured Flagg.

Despite missing the playoffs, the foundation remains for the team to be contenders with a roster that, aside from Doncic, remained mostly intact after the 2024 finals run.
While Irving likely won't return from his ACL injury until the back half of the season, Davis and another future Hall of Famer, Klay Thompson, who was added last offseason, should provide plenty of stability for Flagg to find his NBA footing while not needing to instantly take on a colossal workload.
'Those guys have so much knowledge,' Flagg said of his new veteran teammates. 'They've been through so much, and they have so much experience that it's just going to be an incredible opportunity for me to learn and grow under them.'

While he may not be the No. 1 option right away, Flagg will seemingly take the torch of the franchise that was passed first from Dirk Nowitzki to Doncic.
'I'm coming in just trying to learn and trying to get better every single day,' Flagg said. 'If I can do that to the best of my ability, I think expectations and pressures that other people will put on me and our team, that will kind of work itself out.
'So I'm just trying to come in and be the best that I can be and just win at the highest level.'

Fever start fast without Caitlin Clark, hang on for 94-86 win over Wings and Paige Bueckers
DALLAS — Kelsey Mitchell scored 32 points, and the Indiana Fever held on without the injured Caitlin Clark, taking a 22-point lead in the first quarter before finishing off a 94-86 victory over the Dallas Wings on Friday night. Clark's left groin injury spoiled what was supposed to be the first meeting of the past two No. 1 picks in the WNBA draft. The game was the first at the home of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks for the Wings, who took Paige Bueckers first overall this year. The Wings, who are planning a move to downtown Dallas in the next couple of years, have played about 20 miles away on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington since moving to the area nine years ago. Bueckers sparked a rally by beating the first-half buzzer with a long 3-pointer after a steal and finished with 27 points despite a cold start from the field. The Wings took a lead in the fourth quarter after trailing by 23 in the first half, but couldn't overcome 26% shooting in the first 10 minutes. Arike Ogunbowale scored 15 for Dallas. Aliyah Boston scored 21 points and Natasha Howard had 15 points and 13 rebounds and three steals for the Fever, who made all 11 of their shots from inside the 3-point arc in the first quarter and shot 59% for the game. The absence of Clark, who missed a second consecutive game after sitting out five earlier this season with a quadriceps injury, didn't keep the crowd or the pro sports stars away. The 20,000-seat American Airlines Center was nearly full, and among the fans were nine-time All-Star Kyrie Irving of the Mavericks, star pass rusher Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys and Cooper Flagg. The 18-year-old Flagg was drafted No. 1 overall out of Duke by the Mavericks on Wednesday, a little more than two months after the Wings selected Bueckers. Flagg, who got a loud ovation when he was shown on the video board in the third quarter, was introduced to the Dallas media earlier Friday. Cade Cunningham, a Dallas-area resident and the No. 1 overall choice by the Detroit Pistons four years ago, sat near Parsons. Even with all the star power, there were plenty of Clark — and Fever — backers in the crowd, delighted by the quick start with the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year on the bench in street clothes. The Wings took their only lead at 80-79 on JJ Quinerly's three-point play midway through the fourth quarter. Aari McDonald started a clinching 9-0 run for the Fever with a bucket that broke an 82-82 tie.

PGA Tour Pro Hits Rare Feat, on Verge of Changing Life at Rocket Classic
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Rocket Classic has been a fireworks show from the start. First came Min Woo Lee's sizzling 63, matched by two others to tie the early course record. Then, in a jaw-dropping eight-minute span, Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter each carded 62s to reset the number. Jake Knapp followed with a blistering 61 to break it again. But perhaps the most remarkable moment of the week belonged to a lesser-known name, Philip Knowles, who pulled off a feat so rare, it's only happened a handful of times in PGA Tour history. RIO GRANDE, PUERTO RICO - MARCH 07: Philip Knowles of the United States plays his shot from the 14th tee during the second round of the Puerto Rico Open 2025 at Grand Reserve Golf Club... RIO GRANDE, PUERTO RICO - MARCH 07: Philip Knowles of the United States plays his shot from the 14th tee during the second round of the Puerto Rico Open 2025 at Grand Reserve Golf Club on March 07, 2025 in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. (Photo by) More Getty Images On Friday, Knowles holed out for eagle not once, not twice, but three times! All were from off the green, all on par-5s. He chipped in from 27 yards at the 17th, 37 yards at the 4th, and 40 yards at the 7th to shoot an 8-under. Currently, Knowles holds a share of the 14-under lead alongside Chris Kirk, who fired 9 birdies in Round 2, and Andrew Putnam, who added 4 birdies and an eagle to his card. "I got pretty lucky a couple times," Knowles said after the round. "I hit quality shots that ended up going in the hole, but I can't imagine chipping in three times for eagle ever again in my life." What makes this even more special is Knowles' story behind it. The 28-year-old is playing on a medical exemption after a brutal stretch of injuries and illness. Since 2022, he's battled a severed thumb nerve, shingles in his right eye, and a bout of mononucleosis. He's made just two cuts in 11 starts this season and earned $75,665, a far cry from the $1.728 million winner's check up for grabs this weekend. "I've got two little girls, I've got a wife who needs me to help," he expressed. "It's not like I can spend my days just 'woe is me'". 9 birdies any day is ridiculous but to do it in 30MPH steady winds and to qualify for your hometown event is amazing. Philip Knowles of @UNFGolf via Bradenton post 66 and leads by 2 with only a few groups left. Shoutout to his coach of 10 years @jimraglandgolf @acaseofthegolf1 — chris timmerman (@ctimmerman35) March 17, 2025 Knowles entered the week ranked 195th in FedExCup points and 519th in the world. To retain his PGA Tour card, he must finish inside the top 100 by season's end. A win in Detroit would all but seal it! Despite the pressure, Knowles looked composed. "Though I haven't been in this position, it doesn't feel unfamiliar," he said. "We've all been here at some level, college, junior golf, early pro golf." Going into Sunday's final round, Knowles will tee alongside co-leaders Chris Kirk and Andrew Putnam. With 18 holes to play and his career hanging in the balance, Knowles' aim is crystal clear.
