Spain to invest over $3.3bln in cybersecurity as part of defense plan
Madrid, May 8 (UNI) Spain will spend about 3 billion euros ($3.39 billion) on developing cybersecurity as part of a new plan for the industrial and technological modernization of the kingdom's security and defense sector, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said.
"We are talking about an industrial and technological plan for security and defense ... What is planned to be done? It [the plan] provides for the allocation of 3 billion euros to combat threats by developing cybersecurity systems based on artificial intelligence and quantum computing, in which Spain, fortunately, is well versed," Sanchez said on Wednesday in a speech to the Congress of Deputies, the lower house of the parliament.
Spain faces more than a thousand cyberattacks on critical infrastructure facilities every year, Sanchez noted, adding that the funds will also be used to strengthen the army's telecommunications capabilities, create new communications satellites, modernize radar systems and introduce 5G networks.
As part of the overall defense plan approved by the government, Spain will increase defense spending to 2% of GDP in 2025, including by redirecting part of the funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Total investment in security and defense next year will amount to 33.1 billion euros.

SC declines urgent listing of Tamil Nadu's suit for Rs 2,291 crore education funds
New Delhi, June 9 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday declined to urgently list a suit filed by the Tamil Nadu government against the Union Government, seeking the release of over Rs 2,291 crore under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme (SSS). A bench comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan rejected the plea for early listing during the court's partial working days, observing that there was "no urgency" in the matter. Senior Advocate P. Wilson, representing the Tamil Nadu government, pressed for an urgent hearing, arguing that nearly 48 lakh students in the state were being deprived of essential education funds. 'All students in Tamil Nadu are being denied their right to education funds by the central government. The new academic year began on June 3, and admissions are underway,' Wilson submitted. When Justice Mishra enquired when the funds had stopped, Wilson responded that the funds had not been released since last year and that the original suit was filed on May 20, 2025. Despite this, the bench declined the urgent listing request. Tamil Nadu has approached the Supreme Court under Article 131 of the Constitution, accusing the Centre of unlawfully withholding funds under the SSS. The state contends that the denial is tied to its non-implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the PM SHRI (Schools for Rising India) scheme. In its suit, Tamil Nadu seeks a direction for the Union Government to release the pending Rs 2,291 crore along with applicable interest. The state also seeks a declaration that making the release of SSS funds contingent upon the adoption of NEP 2020 and the PM SHRI scheme is 'unconstitutional, illegal, unreasonable, and arbitrary. J&K Lt Governor inaugurates 'CCTV Surveillance System with Integrated Command and Control Centre'
Jammu, June 9 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday inaugurated 'CCTV Surveillance System with Integrated Command and Control Centre' for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. 'Cutting-edge technology will enable real-time monitoring and crowd management for safety, security of devotees, and it will ensure hassle-free pilgrimage,' the Lieutenant Governor said. The Lieutenant Governor observed that Actionable insights gleaned from the system will enable prompt response in emergencies. The Command & Control Infrastructure, including an AI-powered surveillance ecosystem, will provide comprehensive situational awareness, optimise operations and Quick and efficient coordination with emergency responders, he said. The large-scale, technology-driven surveillance and crowd management initiative will significantly enhance the safety and security, improve crowd control measures and operational efficiency within the Shrine area. Under the project, One Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC) located at Katra and 7 Sub-Control Centers along the pilgrimage track for localized monitoring and coordination have been established which will ensure 24x7 monitoring of all vulnerable and high-traffic zones and enable proactive and prompt response to crowd build-up, security breaches, or medical emergencies. Over 700 cameras have been deployed across the Shrine Area, including 170 new high-definition IP cameras and integration of more than 500 existing cameras, covering all critical and vulnerable locations, including entry/exit points, gathering areas, and the pilgrimage track. The Project also featured AI-based analytics and Advanced technology mechanisms like Gesture Recognition, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), Facial Recognition, Intrusion Detection System, and Crowd Management Tools. Anshul Garg, CEO, SMVDSB, gave a detailed presentation on the Integrated Command and Control Centre's technical features and its anticipated benefits in day-to-day shrine functioning. He informed that the Centre is equipped to generate automated alerts for crowd congestion, route blockages, landslides or emergencies, thereby enabling swift decision-making and response. The Lieutenant Governor also interacted with the engineers and operational staff at the Centre. He emphasised the need for regular training of staff and seamless collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders to maximise the Centre's utility. Notably, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has recently provided advanced security equipments to the security agencies deployed for the yatra management including X-Ray Baggage Scanners, Door Frame Metal Detectors, Hand-Held Metal Detectors, and Under Vehicle Search Mirrors/Scanners, to enhance robust security measures in the Shrine area, in pursuance to joint security review conducted last year on the directions of the Lieutenant Governor.
