Rolls-Royce says trading ‘strong' despite tariffs and supply chain issues

British engineering giant Rolls-Royce has hailed a 'strong start' to the year despite growing uncertainty due to tariff increases and continued supply chain issues.
The London-based company stressed it expects to 'offset' the impact of announced tariffs and is taking mitigating actions.
Boss Tufan Erginbilgic said the company, which specialises in making aircraft engines, is also closely monitoring the potential impact of inflation and a wider economic slowdown on demand for its products.
It comes a month after US President Donald Trump announced a major plan for tariffs on imports into the country.
On Thursday, the firm held its profit and cash flow guidance for the rest of the year despite 'the uncertainties associated with tariffs and continued supply chain challenges'.
Rolls-Royce has been undergoing a major turnaround plan under chief executive Mr Erginbilgic which included cutting 2,500 jobs.
He said the business is making 'good progress on our transformation' and is confident of meeting its financial guidance for the year.
It is on track to deliver between £2.7 billion and £2.9 billion of underlying operating profit for 2025.
Bosses said it is continuing to see 'strong demand' for its products and services globally, with 'robust' order volumes in its defence business.
Mr Erginbilgic said: 'Our transformation of Rolls-Royce is progressing strongly and we continue to expand the earnings and cash potential of the business.
'We are creating a more resilient and agile Rolls-Royce that is better equipped to respond to changes in the external environment.
'As a result, we have had a strong start to the year.'

BT considers takeover move for struggling rival TalkTalk

BT is weighing up a potential takeover of the rival telecoms and broadband company TalkTalk, which is struggling amid financial difficulties and a customer exodus. The UK's biggest broadband provider is understood to have discussed the strategic possibility of buying TalkTalk. However, it is understood no approach or talks have been held with TalkTalk, and bankers have not been asked to draw up takeover plans. TalkTalk, founded by Sir Charles Dunstone, is the UK's fourth-largest telecoms group, with about 3.2 million customers. However, the group lost 400,000 customers in the 12 months to February, and last year Dunstone and other shareholders were forced to inject £235m to shore up its finances. TalkTalk has struggled since it was taken private by Toscafund, a London-based hedge fund, in a £1.1bn leveraged buyout that added £527mn of debt to its balance sheet in 2021. It now has about £1.2bn in debt on its balance sheet. A BT-TalkTalk tie-up would give the combined group control of about 36% of the UK broadband market. 'Companies are always looking at rivals in their sector, particularly distressed assets,' said one City source discussing the potential takeover plans, which were first reported by the Telegraph. In recent weeks it has emerged that TalkTalk has fallen behind on payments with supplies and partners including Openreach and CityFibre. According to estimates from New Street Research, TalkTalk pays its broadband suppliers more than £60m each month. The Salford-based company cut 350 jobs last year as part of a wider plan to strip £120m out of the business. If a takeover offer from BT were to crystallise, it could face objections from rivals and an investigation from the UK competition regulator. Virgin Media O2 has also previously considered making an approach for TalkTalk. British wine tycoon found dead in his Spanish villa after car rally

Mystery is surrounding the death of a British multi-millionaire at a gated community for some of the wealthiest people in Spain. Tarik Wildman was found dead at his luxury villa in La Virginia complex in Marbella, hours after returning from a car rally he had organised in Italy. It is understood that the 65-year-old died 'peacefully' in his sleep but, at this moment, the cause is still not known. Tributes have been pouring in for Wildman, who was the managing director of PJ Investments, according to his LinkedIn page. His paternal grandfather founded the wine empire Frederick Wildman and Sons, while his British mother, the late Hon Corinna Cunliffe, was a fashion magazine editor and the daughter of a baron. The Classic and Sports Car Club of Andalucia, of which he was a member, described him as a 'legend and titan'. A memorial they posted online read: 'He had just returned from organising and running his Team Schh rally in Italy which he had done in his beautiful Lancia Flamina, a car he loved. More Trending 'He died peacefully in his sleep but, at this moment, the cause is not known. 'He had amazing friends all over the world, had competed in the Monte Carlo Classic rally and had a depth of knowledge of all things that always astonished me. 'His passion for life in general and motoring in particular was something that others could only envy. 'The world here will never see the like and will never be the same again.
