Microsoft's Free Upgrade Deadline—Millions Of Windows Users Suddenly Move
Millions of Windows users suddenly switch

All change for Microsoft Windows users. A raft of new decisions in March change how you use your PC, from password deletions to account access, and even a new blue screen of death. But the most critical decision came by way of Microsoft's posts and emails warning users of 'data breaches, identity theft, and other serious consequences.'
Microsoft is targeting the hundreds of millions of users sticking with Windows 10, despite its end of support now just over six months away. The move to Windows 11 is free for eligible, licensed PCs at least until then. Miss that date, though, and 'when your OS is no longer getting those all-important security updates, it can be a bit like leaving your front door wide open,' all of which, Microsoft warns, is 'not fun.'
And now there's suddenly real movement, as a staggering 4% of Windows 10 users switch in a month after holding out for years. According to the latest from Statcounter, the share of users on Windows 10 has dropped down to 54% from almost 70% a year ago, while Windows 11's market share is more than 40% (42.7%) for the first time.
Windows 11 surges

The bad news for Microsoft and all those Windows 10 users is that there is a hard red line somewhere in this number, with PCs incapable of the upgrade to Windows 11. This is down to the security hardware restrictions Microsoft has placed on PCs eligible to move. This hard line has been markedly reinforced in recent weeks, as various workarounds are shut down and users are told not to update ineligible PCs.
We think — but don't know for sure — this impacts around 240 million PCs, leaving users no choice but to change hardware to maintain a fully supported Windows OS. This could be from October 14 this year, albeit there will be a paid ($30) 12-month extension for home users and a longer, more expensive extension for business users.
The biggest threat will come in the first 12-18 months post October 14, when PCs are at risk as users ponder what to do next. Expect some cyber security chaos for a while. From that hard date, 'Microsoft will no longer provide software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Transitioning to Windows 11 is essential for maintaining your access to the latest security features.'

Florida's social media ban for kids halted by federal judge
A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction against Florida's HB 3, a law regarding youth and social media accounts. Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker in Tallahassee says in court documents obtained by FOX Business that the law is a violation of the First Amendment's protections on free speech. Walker's ruling on Tuesday sides with trade groups NetChoice and Computer and Communications Industry Association, putting HB 3 on hold until the litigation is resolved. 'Today's ruling is yet another affirmation that the government cannot control or censor online speech. Like all Americans, Floridians have the right to access lawful speech without the government controlling what they say, share or see online,' Chris Marchese, NetChoice Director of Litigation, said in a statement. 'Lawmakers should focus on real, constitutional alternatives that respect both family autonomy and free speech,' he continued. HB 3 requires social media platforms to bar users under the age of 14 and requires users 16 and under to have parental consent before opening an account. Getty Images Jeremy Redfern, a spokesman for Republican Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, whose office is defending the law, said in a statement obtained by Reuters that the 'platforms do not have a constitutional right to addict kids to their products.' Uthmeier's office plans to appeal it to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, he said. HB 3 requires social media platforms to bar users under the age of 14 and requires users under 16 to get parental consent before opening an account. It was supposed to go into effect Jan. 1, but was put on hold due to litigation. 'Today's ruling is yet another affirmation that the government cannot control or censor online speech,' NetChoice's director said. Getty Images NetChoice, which represents social media platforms, has won injunctions in recent months against similar laws in Utah and California that restricted the use of social media platforms by youths. In Tuesday's ruling, Walker said he appreciated that parents are concerned about their children's social media use, but that other, unchallenged provisions of the law offered them recourse. The industry groups did not address some parts of the law that directed social media companies to delete youth accounts at parental request.

RSA Announces New Windows Desktop Login and Entra ID Passwordless Solutions
LAS VEGAS, June 04, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--RSA, the security-first identity leader, announced new innovations that expand RSA's complete passwordless solutions, including support for Microsoft Entra ID-joined desktops and legacy, RADIUS-based environments at Identiverse today. These innovations help organizations accelerate deployment of phishing-resistant passwordless solutions across their entire environment, reducing risks, modernizing authentication, and driving efficiency. Available as part of RSA® ID Plus, the only complete passwordless identity security platform, new passwordless features include: Passwordless support for Windows Desktop Login and Entra ID: ID Plus now supports mobile passkeys and QR codes to complete Windows log-in. ID Plus will add Entra ID support in July. One-step enrollment process: Starting in July, users will be able to enroll new RSA mobile passkeys and other RSA MFA methods via a one-step enrollment process that eliminates delays and reduces help desk support costs. Code matching for RADIUS: Organizations operating in RADIUS environments can now deploy code matching to reduce the risk of prompt bombing and ensure legacy architecture stays operational. These new passwordless enhancements are fortified by deep security innovations that extend organizations' defenses and protect against post-passwordless threats. The newly-announced RSA Help Desk Live Verify (patent pending), only available through ID Plus, uses passwordless bi-directional identity verification to stop help desk scams like the recent attacks on Marks & Spencer, Christian Dior, Co-Op, and MGM Resorts. RSA Mobile Lock secures the authentication process itself by scanning devices for app tampering, malware, sideloading, jailbreaking, and AiTM attacks. "Not all passwordless is created equal: government agencies, finance, energy and healthcare providers, and other security-first organizations need a passwordless solution for all users, environments, and devices," said RSA CEO Rohit Ghai. "Moreover, to defend against emerging threats, organizations must integrate passwordless into an identity security platform that provides full visibility into user access while constantly assessing identity security posture. Cyberattacks start wherever organizations' security capabilities end, which is why high-security organizations rely on RSA for a complete identity security platform that stops phishing, malware help desk scams, ransomware, and other attacks before they start." Identiverse attendees are invited to demo these new solutions at booth #342.
