Luis Enrique's reshaping of PSG culminates in Champions League final
PARIS - As Paris St Germain turned the page on the Kylian Mbappe era, coach Luis Enrique wasted no time in reshaping the identity of a club long built around individual stars and the Spaniard's method was quick to bear fruit.
PSG, who have faced several embarrassing misfortunes in the Champions League, are now gearing up to play in the final of Europe's elite club competition against Inter Milan on Saturday.
Mbappe, who officially left PSG at the end of last season and has joined Real Madrid, had been the undisputed face of the French club since Neymar's departure and Lionel Messi's brief spell in Paris.
But under Luis Enrique the French champions have undergone a decisive shift away from a superstar-based model towards a more disciplined, collective-driven footballing philosophy.
The Spaniard, known for his abrasive and uncompromising personality, made his intentions clear early in his tenure.
"Our game does not consist in letting Mbappe do what he wants," Luis Enrique said last season in a documentary centred around his spell at PSG, when the forward made public his decision to leave as a free agent.
"That was the old philosophy (of the club), which never won a major trophy."
The message was unmistakable — and the culture around the club changed.
"There's been a shift in the mindset this season," Ousmane Dembele, who has turned from an enigmatic, wasteful winger into a formidable number nine, said last week.
"The coach handled everything."
Luis Enrique's tenure has seen the return of intense training sessions, strict tactical demands and an insistence on collective responsibility, with no player absolved of defensive duties.
His confrontational, no-nonsense approach stands in stark contrast to the player-driven environment of recent years, which insiders say often prioritised keeping marquee names content over footballing coherence.
The results have been immediate.
PSG wrapped up another Ligue 1 title and reached the latter stages of the Champions League playing with a structure and clarity rarely seen in recent seasons, while also claiming a record-extending 16th French Cup.
When Mbappe made clear last season that he would leave, the club sought to fight the France forward's departure, but Luis Enrique was all smiles.
"If I think I'll do better next season? No doubt. Because the fact to have one player who can do whatever he wants on the pitch implies there are situations I cannot control," he said.
"Next season, I will control all of them. Without exception."
Often derided for his alleged haughty attitude last term when PSG lacked coordination, Luis Enrique always said 'You cannot understand'.
He has since then proven his critics wrong, regardless of Saturday's result. REUTERS

Paul was mauled by the Spaniard in an eye-popping near-flawless 6-0 6-1 6-4 performance with Alcaraz firing 40 winners in the process. "Not particularly fun," Paul told reporters. "He played some great tennis, returned very well, had me on my backfoot all the time, playing so fast. "Even on the changeovers he was getting up so fast with 20 seconds left. I thought I have got to slow down. He played some amazing tennis. "He was on offence and that was not what I needed tonight. I did the best I could." The world number 12, who had spent close to 11 hours on court in his previous rounds, said he had tried to slow the match down in an effort to shake his opponent out of his rhythm. "Just waiting for the chair umpire to say 'time'," Paul said. "I felt like I was sitting down and there were 20 seconds left and Carlos was already up." The American put up somewhat of a fight in the third set but had trouble with a nagging abdominal muscle injury and was also feeling pain in his adductors. "I felt better today. I want to win the match but pretty early on it was pretty obvious I was not moving amazing," Paul said. "Everyone bought tickets for the night session so I thought I try my best. Obviously I did not want it to go like that." Paul said he was still planning to defend his title at Queen's in London later this month ahead of Wimbledon after a check on the injuries. "That's the plan. It's my ab(dominal) and the adductors. A couple of things. We are going to figure that out in the next couple of days," he said. Four-time champion Iga Swiatek, who is looking to become the first woman in the professional era to win four consecutive titles in Paris, also punched her semi-final ticket with a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina of Ukraine to set up a mouth-watering semi-final with world number one Aryna Sabalenka. But it was four-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz's merciless dismantling of Paul that grabbed the fans' attention, with the 22-year-old Spaniard terrorising the former French Open junior champion who looked like a fish out of water. Alcaraz charged through the first two sets in just 53 minutes and in near flawless fashion, hitting winners at will and chasing down every ball before the shell-shocked American had any time to react. MUSETTI WARNING Musetti, the world number seven, who escaped with a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct when he kicked a ball at a line judge, eventually overran 15th seed Tiafoe. "Honestly it was really unlucky coincidence," said Musetti of the incident. "I was a little bit scared, because I really didn't want to harm nobody, of course. So I immediately went to the line umpire, and I of course said, 'sorry', I apologise to everyone." "It was right to have a warning, but I think the umpire saw that there was no intention about that, and that's why probably just, you know, let me continue my game." That occurred in the second set when Musetti, the only man to reach at least the semi-finals of every main claycourt event this season, was given balls to serve. He kicked one to inadvertently hit the line judge, who barely flinched even though she was hit on her upper body. Grand Slam rules state that players are issued a warning at first instance for any ball abuse. Tiafoe, however, called it 'comical' that there was no serious punishment. "I mean, obviously he did that and nothing happened," said Tiafoe, who had looked surprised and pointed out the incident to the chair umpire. "I think that's comical, but it is what it is. Earlier, and in front of a sparse crowd around lunchtime, Swiatek braved the windy conditions to beat Svitolina 6-1 7-5. Although Swiatek failed to win a title going into the tournament this season, she looks to have rediscovered her remarkable claycourt form in Paris, stretching her winning run at the French Open to 26 consecutive matches following her title three-peat between 2022-24 to add to her 2020 crown. Three-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka, hunting her first French Open crown, also needed just two sets to overcome Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen and snap her opponent's 10-match winning streak at Roland Garros with a 7-6(3) 6-3 victory. "I think we're all here for one reason," Sabalenka said. "Everyone wants that beautiful trophy. I'm glad I have another opportunity, another semi-final to do better than last time." Inter suffered a dismal end to their campaign with Saturday's thrashing in Munich coming after they finished second in Serie A, one point behind champions Napoli, and were knocked out in the Coppa Italia semi-finals 4–1 on aggregate by city rivals AC Milan. Inter face a race against time to appoint a new manager before the Club World Cup, with their campaign getting underway against Mexican side Monterrey on June 18. "The time has come for me to say goodbye to this club after a four-year journey, during which I gave everything," Inzaghi said in a separate statement. Inzaghi won six trophies at Inter: one Serie A title, two Coppa Italia triumphs and three Italian Super Cups. "I want to dedicate one last word to the millions of Nerazzurri (Inter) fans who cheered me on, cried and suffered in difficult moments and laughed and celebrated in the six triumphs we experienced together," he added. "I will never forget you." Italian media reported that Inzaghi will join Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal and will lead them in the Club World Cup in the United States. Inter confirmed that the decision for Inzaghi to leave the club was taken by mutual agreement earlier in the day. "I would like to thank Simone Inzaghi for the work done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today's discussion, which led to the common decision to separate our paths," club president Giuseppe Marotta said in a statement. La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Como's Cesc Fabregas and Olympique de Marseille's Roberto De Zerbi are potential candidates to replace Inzaghi at Inter.
