54 Soldiers Killed in Terrorist Attack in Benin

The government of Benin has confirmed that 54 soldiers were killed in a deadly terrorist attack in the north of the country last week.
The official toll, released Wednesday, is lower than the number claimed by a group linked to al-Qaeda, which took responsibility for the assault.
This marks one of the deadliest attacks on Benin's military in recent years, highlighting the increasing threat posed by jihadist groups expanding their reach beyond the Sahel region into West Africa.
Benin and neighboring Togo have both experienced a surge in extremist violence, as armed groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State intensify operations in the region.
In a statement posted on Facebook, presidential spokesperson Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji
described
the event as a "devastating loss for the nation," underlining the gravity of the security challenge facing the country.
According to SITE Intelligence Group, an organization that monitors extremist activity, the al-Qaeda-affiliated group claimed responsibility on Saturday, stating it had killed 70 soldiers in attacks on two military outposts in northern Benin.
While the government did not confirm the higher casualty figure, the incident underscores Benin's growing vulnerability to extremist violence spreading southward from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, where foreign military operations have scaled down in recent years.

42 Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrikes on several areas in Gaza Strip
CAIRO – 6 June 2025: 42 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes on several areas in the Gaza Strip on Friday according to Palestinian media reports. An Israeli fighter jet struck a five-story residential building in Jabalia, northern Gaza, resulting in the deaths of three Palestinians and injuries to dozens more. According to medical sources, three Palestinians were also killed and others wounded after an Israeli combat drone targeted a charging point for cell phones between tents sheltering displaced people to the west of Khan Younis, WAFA reported. A child was also shot dead by Israeli troops near the Al-Saraya detention area in Khan Younis. Another civilian succumbed to injuries sustained in a previous Israeli strike on the city. Israeli strikes have also killed one Palestinian in the town of Abasan al-Kabira, east of Khan Yunis. In addition, eight Palestinians were killed and 61 injured in renewed massacres in Rafah City in the southern Gaza Strip on Friday. The victims were targeted while trying to reach recently established humanitarian aid sites in western Rafah on the first day of Eid Al Adha. Earlier Friday, 10 Palestinians were killed and others injured in an Israeli raid on homes in Jabalia. They were taken to the Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital in Gaza City.

UN Member States to Adopt Voluntary Political Declaration to Solve Marine Crisis
Rana Atef More than 2,000 scientists and advocates from at least 100 countries participated in the One Ocean Science Congress, dedicated to the increasing marine crisis. 'The ocean is suffering at the cause of humanity,' said the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, who spoke at the opening ceremony on Tuesday. She added, 'Either we save our oceans or the entire race will pay.' Rising sea temperatures due to global warming, ocean acidification, plastic pollution, and offshore oil and gas developments are some of the threats plaguing the ocean. 'Sound research shows global human health is intrinsically linked to a healthy ocean,' said Peter Thomson, the United Nations secretary-general's special envoy for the ocean. The ocean greatly contributes to producing more than half of the oxygen humans breathe, in addition to balancing Earth temperatures by absorbing excess heat and carbon dioxide. 3 billion people depend on the ocean for their daily activities, according to the United Nations. But, at the congress's opening ceremony, Thomson said, 'the ocean's health is currently, measurably in decline.' Now is the time to chart a new future for the ocean, he said. 'Faith has been placed upon this congress to serve as the scientific pillar of the U.N. Ocean Conference,' said Thomson. He added: 'We're expecting that the scientifically compiled conclusions of this congress will inform the leaders and the representatives of governments and civil society who will be attending the conference.'
